How China pushed back the desert and turned it into green space
For decades, the inhabitants of Zhongwei City in southwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region watched a sea of sand ebb closer and closer to their homes, covering their streets, crops and roads, cutting them off from trade, transport and prosperity. They were helpless against the rising tide of the Tengger Desert. Farmers were forced to leave their homes as the sand engulfed their properties.
In the 1950s, scientists and locals joined forces in perhaps the most ambitious anti-desertification project of the 20th Century. Without any cutting-edge technology, machinery or chemicals, hundreds of people worked over the decades, turning the desert into land capable of cultivating apples and trees.#JobChallenge#desert#oasis

Near ZhongWei city (Ningxia, China) flows the Yellow River. On one side of the river is a huge dune barrier (300m high), which separates the city from the very large Tengger sand desert.

Mass line dance in Zhongwei city, Ningxia province, China
I was in Zhongwei, Ningxia and recorded a snippet of this mass line dance which is a fixture in almost every public park in China after dinner. This was the People's Square, or 人民广场, the main public square found in every city.
I was particularly amused by this because of the background song 中国冲冲冲, which is extremely catchy. I have no idea how to translate it other than China rush rush rush

The off-road challenge competition concluded in the Tengger Desert of Alashan League, north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region on Friday.
More than 40 off-road teams including 1,000 players from around the country took part in the game.

Tengger / Gobi Desert - China (DJI Phantom Drone Video)
Driving through the southern tip of the Gobi desert in Inner Mongolia, China, close to the city of Zhongwei. The Yellow River stops the desertification to the South.
Lots of industry/power plants and photovoltaic farms can be seen in this region. The video was shot with a GoPro Hero 4 and a DJI Phantom 3 drone.

Environment problems are still escalating in Tengger Desert, Inner Mongolia, as the untreated waste water dumped by chemical plants has turned the place into a giant septic tank.
