Episode 2520.2 | Tennessee River Museum | Tennessee Crossroads
Tennessee is filled with hundreds of lakes and rivers from border to border, and they all have their own unique stories to tell about their role in our history. Tennessee Crossroads paid a visit to Savannah, TN where we discovered a unique museum that’s completely dedicated to the state’s namesake river. Join Nashville Public Television's Tennessee Crossroads to find out more about the Tennessee River Museum.
Tennessee River Museum | Tour Hardin County
First constructed in 1939, the building that houses the Tennessee River Museum began as the Savannah post office and now holds a position on the National Register of Historic Places. The goal of the museum today is to commemorate, preserve, and educate visitors on the rich history of the Tennessee River Valley. From one-of-a-kind fossils to post-war reconciliation, discover the life and history that fills the local region at the Tennessee River Museum.

With professionally constructed exhibits, the museum offers a wide range of artifacts and time periods to explore. Interactive exhibits can be found throughout the museum, making it a perfect adventure for visitors of all ages. The museum tour starts at the Paleontology exhibit where visitors can learn about and view a large collection of fossils found throughout the Tennessee River Valley and dating back millions of years. As a Shiloh National Military Park Cooperating Site, the museum provides an in-depth look in the archaeology exhibit into the lives of the Mississippi Mound Builders who called Shiloh home. This exhibit includes 2 unique and exciting points of interest including the famous Shiloh Effigy Pipe as well as a subfloor archaeological dig replica in addition to the extensive collection of artifacts dating back hundreds of years.
Moving forward through time, you’ll find an exhibit dedicated to the pioneers who settled the region, complete with examples of items necessary for success on a new homestead. Take a moment for remembrance and follow the timeline of the tragic Trail of Tears which crossed through Savannah almost 200 years ago. Tennessee history wouldn’t be complete without the story of the Civil War and when the Civil War began, there was no easier way to travel and ship resources than along the Tennessee River. This made the river a key component of the Union’s strategy, providing a rapid course of travel in the heart of the South. The river’s importance is highlighted further in the next three exhibits, The Golden Age of Steamboats, Musseling, and Early Crossings. Step back in time and into a steamboat pilothouse to learn more about the Tennessee Riverboat trade that boosted the region’s economy in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Musseling exhibit includes a section of a mussel boat along with pearls and buttons created in what became a massive pearl industry right on the river.
Finish your Tennessee museum tour with the final exhibit, War and Remembrance. This exhibit highlights the efforts made after the Civil War to recognize those lost to war and prevent another through remembrance and the establishment of Shiloh National Military Park. The gift shop offers toys, books, collectibles, and memorabilia for the whole family to remember your visit to one of many historic and unique Tennessee attractions. The Tennessee River Museum is open year-round and provides free admission to children, school groups, and those with a valid voucher from the nearby Shiloh Park. The communities of Counce, or Pickwick, and Shiloh provide incredible opportunities for residents and visitors of all ages to take part in local recreation and experience the natural wonders that fill our community. Shiloh is home to the Shiloh National Military Park, the most well-preserved battlefield in the US and the site of one of the Civil War’s bloodiest battles. Visitors can enjoy an educational film at the visitors’ center, purchase books and souvenirs at the shop, and explore over 5,000 acres, 150 monuments, 200 cannons, and 650 historic tablets that detail one of the darkest days in local history. Also located inside the park are the Shiloh Indian Mounds, remnants of an indigenous society that once called the lands of Shiloh home. The preserved mounds can be viewed along the short trail, which also features several educational tablets on the mounds and the people who lived there.

Important Lost Mound City Of Castalian Springs, Tennessee
A report on the kind of lost forgotten mound city called the Castilian Springs Mound Site. 12 mounds originally, one 600 ft. long and palisade walls, conical mounds and some pretty cool artifacts. Today one lonely hill is all that reminds of us of a once important city in present Tennessee.

Roadtrip Highlights of Georgia, Tennessee, & North Carolina: Including Nashville & Gatlinburg
We spent two weeks road tripping the South of USA with Charlie's parents focusing on Georgia, Tennessee, & North Carolina. We stayed in Blairsville, GA for 3 nights and explored the mountain towns of Helen, Blue Ridge, Dahlonega& Ellijay.
Next we moved on to Nashville, TN the home of country music. We met up with Brittany's parents and explored the Grand Ole Opry, The Honky Tonks of Nashville (our favorite being the Swingin Doors Saloon) and the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Our next stop was Gatlinburg, TN. This is the home of the Great Smoky Mountains. We explored Cades Cove (a driving pass through the mountains) and hiked several trails and viewed countless beautiful waterfalls. Although Gatlinburg is becoming touristy, the likes of the Eight Gables Inn (where we stayed) and the Smoky Mountains bring back that mountain feel that everyone goes for.
After three nights in Gatlinburg., we moved on to Maggie Valley, NC. This is where we explored the Wheels Through Time Museum. Anyone in the surrounding areas MUST stop in this living museum. Charlie's dad spent 3 1/2 hours in the Wheels Through Time checking out the fascinating collection (all of which runs!)

Chattanooga floods , Tennessee floods, a wild history

Contemporary extension of the Hunter Museum of American Art
As the birthplace of the tow truck, Chattanooga is the home of the International Towing and Recovery Hall of Fame and Museum.[106] Another transportation icon, the passenger train, can be found at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum, called TVRM by locals, which is the largest operating historic railroad in the South. Chattanooga is home to the Hunter Museum of American Art. Other notable museums include the Chattanooga History Center, the National Medal of Honor Museum, the Houston Museum, the Chattanooga African American Museum, and the Creative Discovery Museum.[107][108][109][110][111]
Arts and literature
Chattanooga has a wide range of performing arts in different venues. Chattanooga's historic Tivoli Theatre, dating from 1921 and one of the first public air-conditioned buildings in the United States, is home to the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera (CSO), which became the first merged symphony and opera company in the United States in 1985. The CSO performs under the baton of Kayoko Dan.[112] The Chattanooga Theatre Centre offers 15 productions each year in three separate theater programs: the Mainstage, the Circle Theater, and the Youth Theater.[113][114] Another popular performance venue is Memorial Auditorium.
Chattanooga hosts several writing conferences, including the Conference on Southern Literature and the Festival of Writers, both sponsored by the Arts & Education Council of Chattanooga.[115][116][117]
Attractions
Chattanooga touts many attractions, including the Tennessee Aquarium, caverns, and new waterfront attractions along and across the Tennessee River. In the downtown area is the Chattanooga Choo Choo Hotel, housed in the renovated Terminal Station. Also downtown are the Creative Discovery Museum, a hands-on children's museum dedicated to science, art, and music; an IMAX 3D Theatre, and the newly expanded Hunter Museum of American Art. The Tennessee Riverwalk, an approximately 13-mile-long (21 km) trail running alongside the river, is another attraction for both tourists and residents alike.
Across the river from downtown is the North Shore district, roughly bounded by the Olgiati Bridge to the west and Veterans Bridge to the east. The newly renovated area draws locals and tourists to locally owned independent boutique stores and restaurants, plus attractions along the Chattanooga Riverpark system, including Coolidge Park and Renaissance Park.[118][119]
The Chattanooga Zoo at Warner Park is located a short distance from the downtown area.
Parks and natural scenic areas provide other attractions. The red-and-black painted See Rock City barns along highways in the Southeast are remnants of a now-classic Americana tourism campaign to attract visitors to the Rock City tourist attraction in nearby Lookout Mountain, Georgia. The mountain is also the site of Ruby Falls and Craven's House.[120] The Lookout Mountain Incline Railway is a steep funicular railway that rises from the St. Elmo Historic District to the top of the mountain, where passengers can visit the National Park Service's Point Park and the Battles for Chattanooga Museum.[121] Formerly known as Confederama, the museum includes a diorama that details the Battle of Chattanooga. From the military park, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Moccasin Bend and the Chattanooga skyline from the mountain's famous point or from vantage points along the well-marked trail system.[122]
The Heritage park is a park that lies in East Brainerd. Heritage park has a bocce ball court, a playground complete with swings, and a walking pavement. The park also features an off-leash dog park which is operated by the Friends of East Brainerd, the City of Chattanooga Parks and Recreation Department, McKamey Animal Center and the Goodwill Assistance Dog Academy.
Near Chattanooga, the Raccoon Mountain Reservoir, Raccoon Mountain Caverns, and Reflection Riding Arboretum and Botanical Garden boast a number of outdoor and family fun opportunities. Other arboretums include Bonny Oaks Arboretum, Cherokee Arboretum at Audubon Acres, and Cherokee Trail Arboretum. The Ocoee River, host to a number of events at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, features rafting, kayaking, camping, and hiking. Just outside Chattanooga is the Lake Winnepesaukah amusement park. The Cumberland Trail begins in Signal Mountain, just outside Chattanooga.
