007 SkyFall the REAL Battleship Island Gunkanjima 軍艦島 rare film
ADEYTO presents rare shots of Gunkanjima. The Battleship Island or Ghost Island Hashima 端島 is one of the 505 uninhabited islands in the Nagasaki Prefecture about 15 kilometers from Nagasaki itself.
The island was populated from 1887 to 1974 as a coal mining facility. Mitsubishi bought the island in 1890 and began the project, the aim of which was retrieving coal from undersea mines. They built Japan's first large concrete building (9 stories high), a block of apartments in 1916 to accommodate their burgeoning ranks of workers.
In 1959, the 15-acre island's population reached its peak of 5,259, with a population density of 835 people per hectare (83,500 people/km2). As petroleum replaced coal in Japan in the 1960s, coal mines began shutting down all over the country, and Hashima's mines were no exception. Mitsubishi officially announced the closing of the mine in 1974, and today it is empty and bare, which is why it is called Ghost Island.
The island's most notable features are the abandoned concrete buildings and the sea wall surrounding it. Since the abandoned island has not been maintained, several buildings have already collapsed. Other existing buildings are subject to breakage.
A non-profit organization The Way to World Heritage Gunkanjima (represented by Doutoku Sakamoto) is proposing the designation of the Gunkanjima island as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Admission: 600 yen for adults; 500 yen for junior high and high school students; 400 yen for elementary school students.
This is the third edition of the Ryukyu Lantern Festival, a romantic event featuring thousands of Chinese lanterns adorning the premises of Murasaki Mura.
Located in Yomitan Village, Murasaki Mura is a popular cultural theme park where a typical Ryukyuan townscape from the 14th and 15th centuries is reproduced.
Entertainment is scheduled for every night of the entire two-and-a-half-month-long festival, and food stands featuring dim sum delicacies including pork buns as well as Okinawa soba and yakitori (Japanese skewered chicken) can be found in the Tenshi-kan area, where they will recreate the world of the movie “Sen to chihiro no kamikakushi” (Spirited Away).
A variety of stage entertainment, including classical Ryukyuan kumi-odori dance and live music performances, along with projection mapping and more fun awaits you!
About 5,000 lanterns, including some featuring work by prominent Okinawan woodblock print artist Naka Bokunen, will be displayed at Murasaki Mura. The Yomitan Akari Festival is scheduled to be held simultaneously at several locations in Yomitan Village, which will also be beautifully lit up by lanterns.

1. From Kadena Gate 1 take a RIGHT onto Hwy 58.
2. Pass Kadena circle and take a LEFT at Route 6 heading towards Torii Station and Cape Zanpa.
3. Pass Torii Station on your left and look out for a Lawson’s on your left.
4. At the 1st traffic signal after Lawson the road will split. Take the LEFT fork and follow the signs for Hotel Nikko Alivila.
5. Murasaki Mura will be on the way to Nikko Alivila.
You’ll see it on your left side with parking on your right.

The castle itself was constructed in 1594 and totally destroyed on August 6, 1945

Matthew C. Perry
Matthew Calbraith Perry was a Commodore of the United States Navy and commanded a number of ships. He served in several wars, most notably in the Mexican–American War and the War of 1812. He played a leading role in the opening of Japan to the West with the Convention of Kanagawa in 1854. Perry was very concerned with the education of naval officers and helped develop an apprentice system that helped establish the curriculum at the United States Naval Academy. With the advent of the steam engine, he became a leading advocate of modernizing the US Navy and came to be considered The Father of the Steam Navy in the United States.
