Tenuta Il Poggione: An icon of Italian winemaking... A Founding Family of Brunello di Montalcino - Alessandro Bindocci
Tenuta Il Poggione is one of the three original producers of Brunello di Montalcino and began making the wine in the late 19th century together with Biondi-Santi and Frescobaldi. Alessandro Bindocci, Director and Winemaker for Tenuta il Poggione of Sant'Angelo in Colle, Montalcino, and Mazzoni is uber knowledgeable about the region and it's producers in general and is totally up to speed on everything going down in Montalcino. He has grown up being exposed to the region and its producers collectively from a local and global perspective. Alessandro is an excellent resource on not only the region but on how Brunello is perceived and sold around the world. Il Poggione is one of the oldest Tenuta in Montalcino and one of the three founding members of the Brunello di Montalcino Consorzio. The village of Sant'Angelo in Colle is located in the southwestern subzone of the Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino appellation in what is the highest growing area at 400+ meters above sea level. Il Poggione also produces Mazzoni Super Tuscan wines including a Pinot Grigio, Bianco di Toscana, Barbera and Toscana Rosso that retail for $20 - $25. Alessandro authors Montalcino Report blog about the vines, wines, people, and life in Montalcino and Sant' Angelo in Colle.
Tenuta Il Poggione, Member, Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino: One of First Growers Associations in Italy - Fabrizio Bindocci and Alessandro Bindocci
Long before the Brunello mania and commercial expansion of Montalcino that unfolded in the 1990s (by the 1960s there were roughly 15 producers of Brunello; today there are more than 250), the Tenuta Il Poggione was among a handful of growers and bottlers who began to produce wines made from 100 percent Sangiovese Grosso grapes. With the 2003 vintage, the Tenuta Il Poggione became the first Brunello producer to submit its wines to an outside auditor (DNV, Norway) for certification of its purity and authenticity. Today, even as Tenuta Il Poggione remains one of the most historic domains of the appellation, every single bottle of its Brunello is labeled and certified as having been produced from 100% Sangiovese grapes, grown in Montalcino. Tuscan born and bred, Fabrizio Bindocci began working at the historic estate of the Tenuta Il Poggione in 1976. He swiftly rose to the position of chief winemaker by the end of the decade. By 1999, the Franceschi family of Florence, who have owned the estate since the Renaissance, appointed him as the winery's director. A traditionalist winemaker through and through, Fabrizio has never swayed from his belief that classic large-format aging in oak casks is the key to Brunello's legendary longevity. From 1998 to 2000, he served as the vice president of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino, the appellation's trade association, founded in 1967. In 2010, he returned to the Consorzio, after having been elected to its fifteen-member technical advisory council. He became the body's president in 2012 and continues to serve as the appellation's ambassador abroad and its steward at home. Fabrizio's son, Alessandro, serves as translator for this interview.

viola passita e lavanda, ciliegia sotto spirito, note balsamiche e
speziate e terziario appena accennato.

AZIENDA LISINI
The Lisini estate covers an area of 154 hectares and is located in the south of Montalcino, 1 km from Sant’Angelo in Colle. The favourable location of the Company’s vineyards, associated with the great quality of the soil, entails an exceptional quality of the grapes and give life to one of the most ‘characteristic’ Brunellos of the whole area.
