INTRO:
Coming off a relatively uneventful visit at the hot springs, we were all excited to finally roll into a big city. It would be the it would be the first time in nearly 2 weeks that we would finally get taste of modern conveniences such as paved roads and a larger candy selection!
TRAVEL TIP:
By day 12 the long drives and bad roads had us going a little crazy, so it was imperative we kept ourselves entertained. Before taking a trip of this magnitude, we suggest coming prepared with own music, audio books and a car charger so you can still see the incredible landscape but it will help you zone out better if you feel nauseous or when you feel your patience start to thin. Also, there will be lots of opportunities to get out and stretch your legs so take advantage and walk around. Staying healthy mentally as well as physically can really make or break your experience out in the Mongolian country-side.
Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake ( Great White Lake Тэрхийн Цагаан нуур and The Khorgo volcano ):
A photographer’s dream, the great white lake is a stunning body of water surrounded by extinct volcanos in a protected National Park. If I was asked, “what would be your perfect camping spot?” This would be it! During the summer months, the water even warms up a bit and it’s a wildlife spotting extravaganza! Sadly, I was still feeling too sick to venture out and explore it all so Noah had to be my eyes and ears for the day.

10. Tsagaan suwarga
The words mean White Stupa and the towering structure revealing limestone bedrock dating back to the ancient times makes for a truly awe inspiring sight here. Don’t miss the splendid views of the desert floor down below which transforms from white to yellow to pink before turning red.
09. Khorgo Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur National Park
Within this park, watched over by extinct volcanoes, the Terhiin Tsagaan lake can be found at an altitude of 2060 m. Named for the birch trees that grow in the vicinity, this is the perfect place to get a glimpse of the steppes ecosystem. The fauna of the area include the red deer, white tailed gazelles and Roe deer among others. 06. Orkhon valley
This is a UNESCO World Heritage site where you can find writings from the 8th century. The ancient capital city of Uighur thrived here and this is also where you can find the Tuvkhun monastery. OVOO:
Shortly after leaving our Khongor camp, we had our first encounter with an Ovoo. Scattered all throughout the Mongolia countryside, Ovoo’s are rock and stone mounds used to worship the mountains and the sky. When you see an Ovoo, it’s customary to to stop, circle it three times clockwise and then throw a rock on the pile in order to have a good journey. Some people also leave offerings and if you’re in a hurry, honking the horn while passing an Ovoo will work as well. There’s no such thing as too much luck on a long journey so we made sure to help out…
FLAMING CLIFFS / Bayanzag / Баянзаг/ Bain-Dzak/ Ömnögovi Province
Named because of the red and orange color they give off at sunset, the flaming cliffs are renowned worldwide as the site of many important scientific discoveries. It was here in 1922 that American paleontologist Roy Chapman Andrews first discovered fossilized dinosaur eggs, proving once and for all that dinosaurs did in fact lay eggs. Over time, Many other fossils have been found here including the bones of the velociraptor as well as other prehistoric mammals. It’s been speculated that Andrews served as the inspiration behind Indiana Jones, and while this has never actually been confirmed, it seems totally believable given this setting, and Roy’s larger than life persona.
