The name comes from the Latin word taurus that means bull. The thermal baths were described in the travel journey of the poet Rutilio Claudio Namaziano (416 d.C.), who tells that the name comes from a legend according to which a bull (probably associated to some divinity) pawed the ground before starting a fight, and so a hot water spring of sulphur properties spurted from the ground. In reality, legend appart, it is very likely that the name of the Taurine Baths comes directly from the ancient small lake of Aquae Tauri, from where the spring gushed out.
On the slopes of the mounts of Tolfa, actually, nearby the ancient small lake of Aquae Tauri, gushes out the spring that is still today passing through the Taurine Baths. Different studies speculate that the complex area could be identified with the villa of emperor Trajan and it is known that the thermal springs were well-known and appreciated for their therapeutical qualities since ancient times. The Etruscans were the first to value the waters. They built rudimentary thermal baths, that were developed and widened only later on in Roman times.
In Sulla age Sillana (90-70 a.C.) a new building was erected and it took the name of Taurine Baths, experiencing the main development in Trajan age, followed by a later widening towards the end of Hadrian empire. The thermal area was considerably busy during the whole Imperial age until the empire decadende. During the war between Goth and Byzantines, the complex was completely abandoned; only by halfway through the last century some projects to restore the thermal baths were started, but they were unfortunately never brought to an end. Today, in the archeological park of the Taurine Baths, water doesn't run anymore, but if you want to appreciate the therapeutical properties of its hot water, we recommend to you to visit the neighboring Ficoncella thermal complex.

Civitavecchia is a coastal town northwest of Rome, in Italy. Built in the 2nd century, the Port of Civitavecchia still retains some of its original features, like the Roman Dock. The port area also includes the 16th-century Michelangelo Fort. Nearby, the National Archaeological Museum displays bronze and ceramic artifacts. Northeast of town are the Terme Taurine, the ruins of a Roman thermal bath complex.
Civitavecchia is a town and comune of the Metropolitan City of Rome in the central Italian region of Lazio. A sea port on the Tyrrhenian Sea, it is located 80 kilometres (50 miles) west-north-west of center of Rome, across the Mignone river. The harbour is formed by two piers and a breakwater, on which is a lighthouse. The name Civitavecchia means ancient town. Population was around 53,000 as of 2015.
Civitavecchia is today a major cruise and ferry port, the main starting point for sea connection from central Italy to Sardinia, Sicily, Malta, Tunis and Barcelona. Fishing has a secondary importance. The city is also the seat of two thermal power stations. The conversion of one of them to coal has raised the population's protests, as it has been suggested it could create heavy pollution.
The massive Forte Michelangelo was first commissioned from Donato Bramante by Pope Julius II, to defend the port of Rome. The upper part of the maschio tower, however, was designed by Michelangelo, whose name is generally applied to the fortress. North of the city at Ficoncella are the Terme Taurine baths frequented by Romans and still popular with the Civitavecchiesi. The modern name stems from the common fig plants among the various pools. And also next to the town is the location of the cruise ship docks. All major cruise lines start and end their cruises at this location, and others stop for shore excursion days that allow guests to see Rome and Vatican sights, which are ninety minutes away.
The Port of Civitavecchia, also known as Port of Rome, is an important hub for the maritime transport in Italy, for goods and passengers. Part of the Motorways of the Sea it is linked to several Mediterranean ports and represents one of the main links between Italian mainland to Sardinia.
Civitavecchia railway station, opened in 1859, is the western terminus of the Rome–Civitavecchia railway, which forms part of the Pisa–Livorno–Rome railway. A short line linking the town center to the harbour survived until the early 2000s. It counted two stations: Civitavecchia Marittima, serving the port, and Civitavecchia Viale della Vittoria.
Civitavecchia is served by the A12, an unconnected motorway linking Rome to Genoa and by the State highway SS1 Via Aurelia, which also links the two stretches. The town is also interested by a project regarding a new motorway, the Civitavecchia-Venice or New Romea, nowadays completed as a dual carriageway between Viterbo and Ravenna (via Terni, Perugia and Cesena) and commonly known in Italy as the Orte-Ravenna.

Le Terme Taurine o di Traiano di Civitavecchia
Il sito archeologico delle Terme Taurine sorge sopra una collina immersa nel verde, a circa 5 km dal centro di Civitavecchia. Conosciute anche come Terme di Traiano, dal nome dell'imperatore romano fondatore della città, sono uno dei più importanti complessi termali di età romana di tutta l’Etruria meridionale.
Se vi trovate a Civitavecchia anche solo di passaggio e avete a disposizioni qualche ora vi consigliamo vivamente di visitare le Terme Taurine per un suggestivo tuffo nel passato. Dopo la visita vi consigliamo una pausa relax presso le vicine Vasche Termali della Ficoncella, famose per le proprietà terapeutiche della loro calda acqua.Il nome proviene dal termine latino taurus che significa appunto toro. Le terme furono descritte nel diario di viaggio del poeta Rutilio Claudio Namaziano (416 d.C.), il quale narra che il nome nasce da una leggenda secondo cui un toro (probabilmente assimilato ad una divinità) avrebbe raspato la terra prima di iniziare una lotta, e così sarebbe scaturita la sorgente di acqua calda sulfurea dalle proprietà benefiche. In realtà, leggenda a parte, è molto probabile che il nome Terme Taurine provenga direttamente dall’antico laghetto di Aquae Tauri, dal quale la sorgente sgorgava.
Alle pendici dei monti della Tolfa, infatti, in vicinanza dell'antico laghetto di Aquae Tauri, sgorgava la sorgente che ancora oggi passa per le Terme Taurine. Diversi studi ipotizzano che l’area del complesso si identificasse con la villa dell’imperatore Traiano ed è noto che le sorgenti termali fossero ben conosciute ed apprezzate per le loro virtù terapeutiche fin dall’antichità.
I primi a valorizzarne le acque furono gli Etruschi che costruirono delle terme rudimentali, le quali a loro volta furono sviluppate ed ampliate solo in epoca romana.
In età Sillana (90-70 a.C.) fu eretto il nuovo edificio che prese il nome di Terme Taurine ed ebbe massimo sviluppo in età Traianea, seguito da un ulteriore ampliamento verso la fine dell'impero di Adriano. La zona termale fu notevolmente frequentata durante tutta l'età imperiale fino alla decadenza dell'impero. Durante la guerra tra Goti e Bizantini il complesso venne abbandonato del tutto; solo alla metà del secolo scorso furono avviati dei progetti per restaurare le terme che purtroppo non furono mai portati a compimento.
Oggi nel parco archeologico delle Terme Taurine l’acqua non sgorga più, ma se volete apprezzare le proprietà terapeutiche delle sue calde acque vi consigliamo di visitare il vicino complesso termale della Ficoncella.
Il sito delle Terme Taurine si divide principalmente in 2 aree: una di età repubblicana (I sec. a.C.) costruita in opus reticolatum e una di età imperiale (II sec. d.C.) costruita in laterizio.
Tra le rovine si conservano vasche, sale massaggi ed ambienti vari, il tutto ornato da fregi, mosaici e marmi. Le terme taurine erano davvero dotate di tutti i comfort! Dagli spogliatoi (apodyterium) alle camere da letto (cubicola), dalle vasche per anziani e bambini (caldarium) a quella con l’acqua fredda (frigidarium) nella cui cisterna d'inverno veniva aggiunta addirittura la neve, per finire con un bagno turco (tepidarium) che raggiungeva con temperature elevatissime ed era dotato di una cupola mobile per raffreddare l’ambiente. All'interno del complesso, inoltre, erano presenti molti altri servizi e strutture di pubblica utilità come una biblioteca, una sala massaggi ed una palestra. Luogo di grande aggregazione sociale, le terme erano frequentate sia da personaggi illustri sia da gente comune come i legionari romani al loro a rientro dalla guerra.
Oggi il sito archeologico è interamente gestito con grande impegno dall’associazione comunale Pro Loco, la quale si occupa anche di fornire al turista delle interessanti visite guidate.
Il parco inoltre ospita un giardino botanico, (Horti Traianei), dove potrete passeggiare tra splendide varietà di fiori, piante ed alberi caratteristici.
