Rouses Markets to Open New Complex in Terrebonne Parish
THIBODAUX, LA, April 1, 2019 — Rouses Markets, a family owned, Louisiana-based grocer, today announced plans to develop a new complex in Terrebonne Parish to make room for a rising headcount as well as warehousing to meet its growing supply needs.
Rouses Markets is one of the fastest growing family owned companies in the United States. The new complex sits on 32 acres at the intersection of Highway 311 and Highway 90, about 40 miles west of New Orleans. It includes 310,000 square feet of climate-controlled space, and land to add more warehouses, coolers, freezers and eventually a commissary. The location also allows the company greater access to serve all of their markets.
Donny Rouse, CEO, heralds the move as a return to the company’s roots. “We’re increasing store support services to better serve our stores and customers. Terrebonne Parish makes perfect sense. We started here with our very first store in 1960.” Anthony J. Rouse, Sr. and his cousin, Ciro Di Marco, ran that first 7,000-square foot store in Houma. Today the family has 63 locations and five more under construction, and more than 6,700 team members serving customers across three states: Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.
Donny Rouse purchased the property on March 28, 2019, on behalf of his family’s company. The purchase was made with help from Governor John Bel Edwards, Parish President Gordon Dove, on behalf of the Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government, and State Representative Tanner D. Magee.
Parish President Gordon Dove stated, “What a great day for Terrebonne Parish and the economy. I applaud Donny Rouse and the Rouse family for keeping jobs and resources local, and welcome their store support to Terrebonne Parish.”
The move is expected to take place in January 2020, just as Rouses Markets kicks off its 60th anniversary. “I couldn’t ask for a better start to our anniversary year than a homecoming to Terrebonne Parish, where it all started,” says Rouse.
The move adds 150 jobs to Terrebonne Parish. The warehouse will eventually employ another 200 workers, all of which will be new positions.

Terrebonne Parish Branch NAACP, et al. v. Jindal et al.
In February 2014, lawyers for the NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund (LDF), and cooperating Louisiana attorney, Ronald L. Wilson, filed Terrebonne Parish Branch NAACP, et al. v. Jindal et al., a challenge under the Voting Rights Act and the U.S. Constitution to Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana’s discriminatory voting method for the 32nd Judicial District Court (JDC). On behalf of the Terrebonne Parish Branch NAACP and four Black voters, LDF has asked a Louisiana federal court to rule that at-large voting for the 32nd JDC discriminates against Black voters in Terrebonne because it dilutes their vote and prevents them from electing the candidates of their choice to the parish court. In this video, residents, who have demanded electoral change in their community for over 20 years, voice their need for district-based voting for their parish court to ensure fairness and accountability in Terrebonne Parish, as in other parts of Louisiana.
