Vicksburg National Military Park
Vicksburg was one of the most important battles of the Civil War. The Union victory here led to control of the Mississippi River and effectively split the Confederacy in two. The battlefield is saturated with monuments and memorials which takes away a bit from the battlefield experience. On the auto tour you can follow key points on both the Union and Confederate trenches.

Joseph Augustus Biedenharn (December 13, 1866 – October 9, 1952) was an American businessman and confectioner credited in the summer of 1894 with having first bottled the soda fountain drink, Coca-Cola, at his wholesale candy company building in Vicksburg, Mississippi. As he expanded this business, he created a model of bottling-distributor franchises and built his company through this state, as well as Louisiana and Texas.
In 1913, he moved the manufacturing and bottling operations to Monroe, Louisiana, continuing to grow the business. With his son Malcolm and other entrepreneurs, in 1925 he bought a crop-dusting business. They added eighteen planes to the fleet, making it the largest private one in the world. They developed this business as Delta Air Lines, moving it later to Atlanta, Georgia. The Biedenharn family has had a philanthropic tradition in both Vicksburg and Monroe, making major contributions to historic, educational, recreational and charitable purposes.
Of German ancestry, Biedenharn was the oldest son of twelve children, born in Vicksburg to Herman Henry Biedenharn (1824–1924) and the former Louisa Wilhemine Lundberg (1844–1913). Three children died in 1874/75, eight sons and one daughter grew up. [1] [2] Both were immigrants with their families following the Revolutions of 1848. Biedenharn's father and uncle owned a two-story brick building in downtown Vicksburg, which housed Herman's shoe store on one side and his son Joseph's candy company on the other.
After getting established, Biedenharn married Annie (1870–1936) in 1889. They had a daughter, Emma Louise (Emy-Lou), and three sons, Malcolm S. Biedenharn, Henry A. Biedenharn, Sr., and Bernard W. Biedenharn. Malcolm worked closely with his father in the family business and its various expansions into other fields.
Though Coca-Cola had been invented in 1886 in Atlanta, Georgia by the pharmacist John S. Pemberton, it was not sold in bottles until Joseph Biedenharn developed the new procedure. He delivered the bottled drink to rural areas outside of Vicksburg, increasing the base of customers. He was not only the first bottler of the drinks but he established the new marketing technique of an independent network of franchise bottlers who distribute the drink. This has since grown to be worldwide in scope. Biedenharn had been advised by his father to go into the nickel business, meaning to offer soft drinks for five cents each. Prior to 1900, many people would hold on to a dime but spend a nickel for pleasure.
Subsequently, Biedenharn and his brothers Will, Harry, Lawrence, Herman, Ollie, and Albert, and sister Katy acquired franchises to bottle Coca-Cola in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. The site at 1107 Washington Street in Vicksburg, where the first bottling occurred, was built in 1890. Today it is a museum dedicated to this brand and industry.[6] As their business grew, the Biedenharns bottled Coca-Cola in other locations in downtown Vicksburg until 1938, when they constructed a new Coca-Cola plant at 2133 Washington Street. The family sold the first building, and it was used for other commercial purposes.
In 1979, the Biedenharns regained ownership of the building. They renovated it and adapted it for use as a museum, using historic photographs and various exhibits to interpret the Coca-Cola heritage. The Biedenharns donated the building to the Vicksburg Foundation for Historic Preservation.

Heavy Rain, Thunderstorms May Lead to Flooding in Parts of the South Through Early ThiAreas of heavy rain and thunderstorms will threaten the southern U.S. through early this week.
Urban and flash flooding will become a concern in many areas of this region.
Many areas will pick up 1 to 3 inches of rainfall through Wednesday, but locally higher amounts are possible.
Persistent areas of rain and thunderstorms will set up over the southern states through early this week, raising concerns for urban and flash flooding.
Torrential rainfall caused flooding in the Montgomery, Alabama, area late Saturday resulting in numerous flooding roadways. A total of 8.15 inches of rain fell in Montgomery on Saturday, making it the wettest May day on record in the city. s Week
An area of low pressure will develop along a stalled front near the Gulf Coast and slide east over the next few days. That low will pull abundant tropical moisture northward from the Gulf of Mexico, providing the fuel needed for heavy downpours to develop.
For this reason, the National Weather Service has hoisted flash flood watches for parts of southeast Louisiana, southern Mississippi and the Southern Appalachians.
Sunday: Showers and thunderstorms will be most widespread from eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania to the Gulf Coast from eastern Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle. Locally heavy downpours from the Appalachians to the Gulf Coast and south Texas could cause some flash flooding.
Monday: Heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected along the Gulf Coast from south-central and southeast Texas to southern Alabama. Flash flooding will likely occur where thunderstorm clusters stall or move too slowly.
Tuesday: The area of heavy rain and thunderstorms will slide a bit east, as southern Louisiana through the Carolinas run the highest risk for urban and flash flooding. This is the day flooding may be the most widespread, with the most moisture available to feed storms.
Wednesday: Lingering showers and thunderstorms are possible near the Southeast coast from North Carolina to central Florida. Locally heavy downpours remain possible, which could lead to additional areas of flooding. This rainfall, however, will beneficial for parts of the Florida peninsula experiencing drought conditions.
Many areas in the South will pick up 1 to 3 inches of rainfall through Wednesday. However, where thunderstorm clusters stall
The best chance of greater than 3 inches of rain will occur in a swath from south-central Texas eastward through Gulf Coast region to the Carolinas.. more than 5 inches of rainfall. The good news is that flood-ravaged Oklahoma, Arkansas and Missouri will avoid the majority of the heavy rainfall.
this rainfall will likely be beneficial in easing drought conditions that remain in place across much of Georgia, Florida and Alabama, as well as northeastern Mississippi and western South Carolina.
The Mississippi River at Vicksburg, Mississippi, is not forecast to fall below moderate flood stage
The Mississippi River at Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is expected to crest at major flood stage late week.
Record-breaking heat poised to bake the West Coast
Temperatures will soar across the western United States early this week, surpassing even late-summer heat levels.
The recent period of dry weather in many Western cities will make it easier for heat to build in the region.
“A large area of high pressure will transport some of the warmest air since last summer across the West Coast early this week,” said. “Records will be challenged from Washington to California.”
Monday’s record high to beat is 100 F in Sacramento, California; the forecast high of 98 will come close.
Residents looking to beat the heat can head to the beaches, where a cooling effect from the Pacific Ocean will prevent temperatures from significantly soaring.
While the century mark is not uncommon in the Central Valley of California in the summertime, these conditions will be the hottest of the season thus far.
Residents must take precautions to enjoy the heat and sunshine responsibly.
The sun angle is currently similar to that of late July, making for a very high UV index and increased threat of sunburns.
“Seattle could have its first day above 80 F since last August early this week,” Rathbun said.
Farther south, hotter weather will challenge higher heat records.
“Portland, Oregon, could break 90 F for

Cemeteries around the state are hallowed places that tell us a lot about our history, like Cedar Hill Cemetery in Vicksburg, one of the country’s oldest and largest cemeteries that’s still in use today. Then we head up to Friendship Cemetery in Columbus where our national Memorial Day holiday has its roots. Down Highway 61 in Natchez, many of the state’s first settlers found their resting places. Finally, the haunting story of Henry Vick at Chapel of the Cross in Madison County plays a central role in that area’s history.
