A Saturday adventure on the Texas State Railroad. Departing Palestine to Rusk and back to Palestine. We were in the 'Open Air' car (the cheapest seats). Probably the best way to enjoy it.

Texas State Railroad Cab Ride
I was lucky enough to ride in the TSRR ex 400; Magma Arizona Railroad No. 7 Cab for the trip from Palestine, Texas to Rusk, Texas. Thanks to Scott, Bill, and Robert; this was my first cab ride and it was GREAT. Not only would I recommend the TSRR to you, but if you can afford it, ride in the cab. This hour and a half ride felt like about 30 minutes!!

Abandoned Rusk High School Revisited
Abandoned Rusk High School. This is private property but the owner gave me permission to poke around some! He has called police several times on people! He doesn't want people inside the building and I can see why! This is a very dangerous place! I would have went in more but I was alone and didn't want to die! The floor is rotten all over the building! I got what could so please enjoy!

Texas State Railroad Steam Locomotive Action 1995
Some1995 steam railroading action captures from my many trips to east Texas. At the time, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department operated the railroad as a park. Discussion was, even then, often about the $1 million annual expenditure above that of passenger revenue and how the operation ought to be privatized or shut down. The TSRR is much like some other steam railroad operations where it is physically isolated from the modern world allowing patrons to step into a portal to the past. The Cumbres & Toltec in New Mexico is another example. I figured I should get some images of the operation since its future was uncertain. #400 is a 1917 Baldwin Locomotive Works 2-8-2 light Mikado. The operation was privatized in 2007 and has had a couple of different operators since then. Video #20.
Houston White, Rusk, Texas
Houston White talked about his military service on Wednesday June 6, 2012. White, a 99-year-old World War II veteran and founding member of the Rotary Club of Rusk, will be the parade marshal for the upcoming Fourth of July Patriotism on Parade celebration in Rusk.
White served in the U.S. Naval Air Corps from 1942 until 1946 and rose to the rank of Chief Petty Officer. Video by Kelly Gooch.
