CHIANG MAI SUNDAY NIGHT MARKET | Eating Thai Street Food and Shopping for Souvenirs
On a quest to eat Thai street food and to shop for some Thai souvenirs we headed over to the Sunday Night Market in Chiang Mai, Thailand. With only a few weeks left in Chiang Mai I've been feeling an urge to see and do as much as I can. Given that Chiang Mai has been our base as opposed to a travel destination it's embarrassing how little we've really explored the city. One thing we had been putting off for weeks was visiting the Sunday Night Market.

Also known as the 'walking street' night market, the entire streets of Pra Singh and Ratchadamnoen are completely closed to traffic. Officially, if one were to walk down the entire market it stretches out well over a kilometer.
Unlike the Saturday Night Market located on Wua Lai road, the Sunday Night Market sprawls and spews off in several directions in and around Tha Pae Gate. With such a mammoth territory to cover we decided to stick around the East Gate area of the Old City to focus on devouring Thai street food and shopping for some Thai souvenirs to send back home as presents. Considering this is peak tourism season in Thailand we bumped elbows with many others in this bustling night market that rivals the likes of Taipei's Shilin and Malacca's Jonker Street. As a tip it is recommended to go early if you want to avoid the insanity of a sea of pedestrians; however, for those who enjoy snapping photos the crowds may be preferred ;)
Transcript:
Tonight we are visiting the Sunday Night Market in Chiang Mai and right now we are at Tha Pae Gate and this is where the market starts running one kilometer into the old city. So we're going to be wandering around, sampling some food and showing you what it is like over here on a Sunday.
So you can buy a lot of handicrafts here at this market. For example, silk, scarves, wood carvings. You can get some paintings. They have ceramics. Silverware. Lots of jewelry. I mean you can browse here for hours on end. And trinkets galore. Mmmmm.
When you get tired of walking around in the night market you can just head over here to sit down and relax and get a nice Thai foot massage. Thirty minutes for two dollars right? Probably.
Actually it's 80 Baht for the foot massage. You can get a cheaper one at the Chiang Mai park.
One spring roll. Yeah. One tempura. One of this. One of this? Ah, yeah one.
Well you sure loaded up with some tasty treats. Okay, so this is my second dinner. I have some deep fried tempura eggplant with a sweet and sour sauce on top and fresh spring rolls with carrots and cilantro maybe and some noodles.
Okay, try one of them? And that would be? It tastes very healthy. Hahaha! Is it good? Mmmm, it's not as flavorful as I would have hoped. Here, have a look. It's actually bean sprouts not noodles. I was wrong.
Bean spouts and tofu and some carrots.
And what is this over here? Well, I must have been a monkey in a past life because whenever I get a chance to try a banana I'm always in there. And this is the deep fried version. So, it's already kind of smushed up here. Awesome.
Does it have some kind of special sauce over top? No, there is no special sauce it's just deep-fried and the banana is really mushy and moist in the inside.
Okay, this is my tempura eggplant. Mmmm. Okay, that tastes a lot better. It's almost like a french fry. Can I say that? Yep, it has a nice sweet and sour sauce over top and it's very oily. Um, but that means it is very flavorful. French fry on a stick.
And that concludes our visit to the hectic Chiang Mai Sunday Night Market.

Chiang Mai (Thai เชียงใหม่ (help·info)) is the second-largest province (changwat) of Thailand, located in the north of the country. Neighboring provinces are (from northeast clockwise) Chiang Rai, Lampang, Lamphun, Tak, and Mae Hong Son. In the north it borders Shan State of Myanmar.
Chiang Mai province is about 700 km from Bangkok and is situated on the Mae Ping River basin and is 300 m above sea level. Surrounded by high mountain ranges, it covers an area of approximately 20,107 km². The district is covered by many mountains, chiefly stretching in the south-north direction. The river Ping, one of the major tributaries of the Chao Phraya River, originates in the Chiang Dao mountains. The highest mountain of Thailand, the 2,565 meter high Doi Inthanon, is located in the province. Several national parks are in the district: Doi Inthanon, Doi Suthep-Pui, Mae Ping, Sri Lanna, Huay Nam Dang, Mae Phang, Chiang Dao.
Attractions
Doi Suthep-Doi Pui National Park (อุทยานแห่งชาติดอยสุเทพ-ปุย) The park consists of forests and mountain ranges. Major mountains include Doi Suthep, Doi Buak Ha, and Doi Pui. This is a main source of tributaries and streams in Chiang Mai. Sacred places, religious attractions and historical sites are located in the park complex.
Walking Street Chiang Mai municipality has organized, since 2006, the Chiang Mai Sunday Evening Walking Street at the Three Kings Monument Courtyard. It has turned into a thriving Sunday evening market which now encompasses nearly the whole of Rachadamnoen road (the main road of the old city), many of its side streets and the square in front of Thapae gate. It is renowned for the locally made handicrafts. In addition, Chiang Mai also organises a Saturday Evening Walking Street on Woa Lai road which runs from Chiang Mai gate, on the south side of the old city, towards the airport.
Chiang Mai Zoo (สวนสัตว์เชียงใหม่) is located next to Huai Kaeo Arboretum. It is a large zoo, which occupies the lower forested slopes of Doi Suthep Mountain. The zoo contains more than 200 types of Asian and African mammals and birds.
Doi Inthanon National Park (อุทยานแห่งชาติดอยอินทนนท์): at 2,565 m, Doi Inthanon is Thailand's highest mountain and one of the coolest peaks. Besides the actual mountain itself, there are a variety of other attractive locations such as Mae Ya, Wachirathan and Siriphum waterfalls and Bori Chinda Cave.
Pang Chang Mae Sa: The elephant shows are a demonstration of the elephants' abilities in log-hauling. After the end of the performance, visitors are able to have a go at riding an elephant.
Wat Phra Singh (วัดพระสิงห์วรวิหาร), houses the revered Phra Phuttha Sihing Buddha (พระพุทธสิหิงค์) image cast in Subduing Mara. The Buddha image is now enshrined in Viharn Lai Kham. The temple compound includes the lovely Viharn Lai Kham featuring exquisite woodcarvings and northern-style murals paintings, a magnificent scriptural repository with striking bas relief, and a circular stupa (in Lankan bell shape).
Mae Sa Waterfall (น้ำตกแม่สา) The famous 8-tiered waterfall in Amphoe Mae Rim occupies a natural setting among towering trees, covered with a lovely breeze all year round.
Night Bazaar: Every evening the center of the provincial city holds one of the provinces biggest markets, selling a huge variety of goods to tourists, both foreign and Thai. The market is 3 blocks long and is surrounded by restaurants, cafes and travel agents.

Phuket Thailand - Paradise on Earth
Chiang Mai (เชียงใหม่) is the hub of Northern Thailand and the Capital City of the Province of this name. Located on a plain at an elevation of 316 m, surrounded by mountains and lush countryside, it is much greener and quieter than the capital, and has a cosmopolitan air and a significant expat population, factors which have led many from Bangkok to settle permanently in this Rose of the North.
Founded in 1296 CE, Chiang Mai is a culturally and historically interesting city, at one time the capital of the ancient Lanna kingdom. Located among the rolling foothills of the Himalayan Mountains 700 km north of Bangkok, it could only be reached by an arduous river journey or an elephant trek until the 1920s. This isolation helped keep Chiang Mai's distinctive charm intact.
Chiang Mai's historical centre is the walled city (city is chiang in the northern Thai dialect while mai is new, hence Chiang Mai or New City.) Sections of the wall dating to their restoration a few decades ago remain at the gates and corners, but of the rest only the moat remains.
Inside Chiang Mai's remaining city walls are more than 30 temples dating back to the founding of the principality, in a combination of Burmese, Sri Lankan and Lanna Thai styles, decorated with beautiful wood carvings, Naga staircases, leonine and angelic guardians, gilded umbrellas and pagodas laced with gold filigree. The most famous is Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep, which overlooks the city from a mountainside 13 km away.
Modern-day Chiang Mai has expanded in all directions, but particularly to the east towards the Ping River (Mae Nam Ping), where Chang Klan Rd, the famous Night Bazaar and the bulk of Chiang Mai's hotels and guest houses are located. Loi Kroh Rd is the centre of the city's night life. The locals say you've not experienced Chiang Mai until you've seen the view from Doi Suthep, eaten a bowl of kao soi, and purchased an umbrella from Bo Sang. Of course this is touristic nonsense, but the Kao Soi, Bo Sang umbrellas, and Doi Suthep are important cultural icons for Chiang Mai residents. Ratchiangsaen Rd hosts the main Sunday night walking street market from Tha Phae Gate to the popular Wat Phra Singh.
Chiang Mai's restaurants offer a wide range of food, second only to Bangkok. Naturally it's a good place to sample northern Thai food: in particular, hunt down some khao soi, yellow wheat noodles in curry broth, traditionally served with chicken (gai) or beef (neua), but available some places as vegetarian or with seafood - see listings below. Another local specialty is hang ley, Lanna-style pork curry. There is also a wide range of excellent international food restaurants, from cheap hamburger stands to elaborate Italian eateries.
Accommodation in Chiang Mai is generally cheap, even by Thai standards. All types of lodging are available from inexpensive guesthouses with little or no service to the typical high rise hotels and elaborate garden resorts. The latest boom is Thai-style boutique resorts located near the old city centre. Several have been built since mid-2005. They offer excellent service in quiet garden settings. Most are fairly small with as few as 8 rooms and a pool, and are decorated with Thai crafts and antiques. Prices are going up as more travelers are visiting the city.
( Chiang Mai - Thailand ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Chiang Mai . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Chiang Mai - Thailand

Best Things To Do And See in Chiang Mai Thailand
Here are some of the best things to do and see in Chiang Mai in Thailand. Commonly referred to as Thailand’s second city, Chiang Mai is a vibrant, colourful hotspot to visit for some of Thailand’s finest street markets, Thai street food, temples and scenery and is a quieter, smaller yet fascinating variation from Bangkok with its own charms.
As a tourist to Thailand, you wouldn’t want to miss out on this city and if you are a backpacker, you can find cheap dorms ($3) and hostels rooms starting around 6$ in this city way cheaper than in the more tourist rich areas of the country further south such as Koh Samui. Indeed, it forms an integral part of the backpacker’s trail, especially if you are trying to do things on a budget yet want to get that authentic cultural and insightful stay.
Backpacking in Thailand can be one of the safest and cheapest of travel experiences and is a good starting place on the map for any budding backpacker. Nearby in the north of Thailand are the other great destinations of Pai and Chiang Rai, all offering something different as they are inland destinations rather than the tourist heavy destinations of South Thailand – Bangkok, Koh Phangang, Pattaya, Phuket and Koh Lipe, Koh Lanta and the other beach resorts of Thailand. As well as the special temple at Wat Doi Suthep which contains the famous golden seated Buddha and can be reached by hiking the hills or via a traditional songthaew. ANother famous but ruined temple is Wat Chedi Luang founded in 1401 – a unique air of mystery surrounds this place and it shouldn’t be missed.
The Chiang Mai Gate Market is an absolute must for the best in Thai street food and market experience, especially at night as is the Sunday walking street starting at Thapae Gate. Don’t miss out on some of the best Thailand nightlife in these areas which are packed with bars and clubs after you’ve eaten.
If you want to see elephants being treated humanely, ethically and in sustainable ways on your visit to inland Thailand, one of the best places to see them is at the Elephant Nature Park (ENP) near Chiang Mai.
Getting out of the city yields beautiful trekking country in the hills where you’ll often come across tribes, waterfalls, Lakes and lakehouses such as at Mae Ngat Dam.

Thailand vlog! Day 1 - Airport adventures, Bumrung Buri/Chiang Mai gate market, 7-Eleven!
Finally made it to Thailand!
This vlog is back in February 1, 2018. Took me awhile but I made it.
Spent the night at the Taoyuan airport in Taiwan to make my 7am-ish flight to Thailand!
Hours later, I settled at my airbnb and checked out the Bumrung Buri market! They are open early in the morning as well as at night time! I just stumbled upon it because it was near my airbnb but food is good! Everything I had there was yummy.^^
In this video, I tried the Tom yum noodle soup with seafood and mango sticky rice!
The next vlog will be my search for the best mango sticky rice in Chiang Mai!

A Taste of Chiang Mai | Thailand
Chiang Mai is Bangkok’s Northern neighbor, and the second largest city in Thailand. Most of the tourist activities are centered in old town, but there is a lot to see and do beyond the gates. Renting a scooter is cheap and recommended! Here are some of the highlights from our trip to Chiang Mai, away from the hustle and bustle that is Bangkok.
Sunday Night Market Walking Street – Tha Pae Gate | A relaxing night market that isn’t overly crowded; Filled with food stalls, and anything from clothing items to flowers made of cocoons. Worth a visit! The Saturday night market on the other hand is extremely uncomfortable and packed.
Elephant Jungle Sanctuary | A MUST SEE. There is a no riding policy here as it’s actually not good for the elephants in the long haul. The family of elephants at this sanctuary is well taken care of, very happy, and the most adorable creatures you will ever witness. (Word of warning: the transportation to this sanctuary is a 2hr song thaew ride, tiring but worth it in the end)
Cooking at Home | One of my trip highlights was cooking with Pom. She is a great teacher, and you will learn to cook and eat delicious authentic Thai dishes at her home situated outside the main city. A local market tour is also included!
Wat Phra That Doi Suthep | While extremely populated with tourist, Wat Phra That is unlike the other temples in Bangkok as it is surrounded by clear skies, greenery, and a view of the city of Chiang Mai atop Doi Suthep mountain. Don’t forget to stop along the way to see the various waterfalls.
Chiang Mai Zoo | If you want to feed hippos, giraffes and panthers (yes, you heard that right), then you might want to visit this zoo. However, the enclosures for the animals are rather small, and you need to pay an additional 100 baht if you want to see the pandas.

Chiang Mai Nightlife - A Night out in the Lady Bars
Chiang Mai has a vibrant nightlife scene. With clubs and bars open all over the city, there isn't much that you can't find here.
Tonight I took a trip to an area of town known as Loh Kroi road, also known as the boxing area.
The street is lined with beer bars and towards the end of the street, you'll find another large complex with at least twenty more bars.
The bar complex also hosts live Muay Thai kickboxing fights and although known for its bar girls and massage shops, Loh Kroi is far less intense and full on compared to places like Pattaya or Bangkok.
It's a fun place where tourists, backpackers and locals meet to have a good time.
Usually, the bars close down between 12 and 1am but sometimes they will stay open later.
There are other clubs and late night venues open in Chiang Mai that stay open a lot later but I didn't make it to them in this video.
Please leave a comment below if you'd like to see me make more Chiang Mai nightlife videos.

New Year in Chiang Mai, Thailand | Plor Tries Travels/Vlogs
Happy New Year!
To celebrate the New Year, we chose to visit one of the most famous provinces in Thailand, Chiang Mai. Choosing Chiang Mai for the New Year is not a difficult choice to make, as this place turns into Rapunzel's Kingdom during this time of celebration as the residents and thousands of tourists float flying lanterns to welcome the a new year. We have heard great reviews about the place, and the event certainly didn't disappoint.
Together with the #TeamTugay and thousands of people, we greeted 2020 with cheers and merrymaking.
