Thai Bike Tours @ Ob Khan, Chiang Mai
Plenty of river crossings and single tracks, very wet ride
Bicycle tour around Thailand's countryside
We begin our cycling through small villages and rice fields and then follow the Lao River downstream. The bicycle ride is pleasant with much greenery due to the proximity of the river. While you are cycling you will discover the real rural Thailand and see the local lifestyle on the outskirts of Chiang Rai, Northern Thailand. We will cycle past various fruit orchards, rice fields, rubber plantations, and see many teak trees. We will stop and visit the amazing white temple (Wat Rong Khun) Chiangrai, Thailand.
Facing Fear at Thailand's Grand Canyon // Chiang Mai
My friends and I head outside Chiang Mai to do some cliff jumping. We accidentally visit Obluang National Park first, and then make it to Hang Dong Grand Canyon, the Grand Canyon of Thailand. There, I encounter my fear of heights head on. Do I jump? Do I chicken out? Watch to find out.

Charoen Chai Community (ชุมชนเจริญไชย เยาราช), Bangkok, Thailand.
I’ve known Michael from Bangkok Vanguards ( for a number of years, and he’s a great guy. So we met up to hang out, eat, and explore and talk about a little more serious subject - the endangered Charoen Chai Community (ชุมชนเจริญไชย เยาราช) in Bangkok’s Yaowarat, Chinatown.
Before exploring the neighborhood though, we stopped of course to eat some nearby Thai street food.
Jay Eng (ร้านเจ๊เอ็ง) - Kuay teow lawd boran (ก๋วยเตี๋ยวหลอดโบราณ) is what this famous street sells. It’s an ok dish, not my absolute favorite, but it’s not a common dish to find in Bangkok either - this old type of style - it’s well worth trying out. Their fried fish cakes (ทอดมันปลา) are awesome.
Price - 35 THB ($1.07) per plate
Satay (สะเต๊ะ) - Next just down the road, and it actually has the same owner, we had some pretty fantastic satay. I especially enjoyed the liver.
Total price - 220 THB ($6.74)
Charoen Chai Community (ชุมชนเจริญไชย เยาราช) - What we really came to explore was Bangkok’s Charoen Chai Community (ชุมชนเจริญไชย เยาราช). This community is threatened by development. Now, Michael and I both know how development is a good and necessary part of any city, however it’s also good to preserve amazing living pieces of history. This community is one of the last Thai Chinese communities in Bangkok that has remained almost the same for a hundred years.
Khao Tom Jay Suay (ข้าวต้มเจ๊สวย) - For dinner we headed to one of the best Thai Chinese street food restaurant right across the street from the community - right next to the community. It had been a few years since I’d eaten there and the food was as good as I had remembered.
Asian date mussels (หอยกะพงผัดต้นหอม)
Stink beans with shrimp (ผัดเผ็ดสะตอกุ้ง)
Daylilies with crispy pork (ผัดดอกไม้จีนสดหมูกรอบ)
Silver barb, pickled mustard greens (ปลาตะเพียบต้มเกี่ยมฉ่าย)
Soup with pickled plum (แกงจืดบ๋วยหมูสับ)
Total price - 450 THB ($13.78)
Big thanks to Michael for hanging out and walking around! He offers some very unique and off the beaten path tours of Bangkok which you can check out here:

Snakehead Fish at Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market - Bangkok Day 4
2 Weeks In Bangkok eBook (it’s FREE):
T-shirts available now:
On Day 4 of this 2 Weeks In Bangkok video guide series we went to Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market (ตลาดน้ำคลองลัดมะยม), which is one of my favorite floating markets in Bangkok - for the food and atmosphere.
00:37 Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market (ตลาดน้ำคลองลัดมะยม) - When it comes to floating markets in Bangkok, and there are quite a few of them, Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market (ตลาดน้ำคลองลัดมะยม) is one of my personal favorites. I love it for the variety and abundance of delicious food, and for the great lush and green atmosphere. Even though it’s still located in Bangkok, the market feels like you’re far removed, and it doesn’t feel like you’re so close to the city. There is a lot of delicious food to eat at the floating market, but one of my favorite things to eat, and something you shouldn’t miss either, is pla chon pao (ปลาช่อนเผา), which is a grilled snakehead fish. Despite it looking a little on the scary side, it’s really an awesome fish, similar in taste to a catfish, but more meaty and not quite as rubbery. It was a really good snakehead fish at the floating market this time - cooked so it was nice and moist. We also ate a plate of goong ob woon sen (กุ้งอบวุ้นเส้น), another excellent Thai seafood dish of mung bean noodles and big freshwater shrimp cooked in a personal pot. After having lunch at the floating market, we then decided to take a boat ride tour, which just costs 50 THB per person, which is a great deal. The boat ride tour was actually quite entertaining and was definitely worth it. If you go to Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market (ตลาดน้ำคลองลัดมะยม), I’d highly recommend the boat tour along with all the delicious food.
16:35 Dinner at Saw Nah Wang (ร้าน ส.หน้าวัง) - After getting back to our hotel near Khao San road, we took a little rest and then headed out for dinner to a restaurant called Saw Nah Wang (ร้าน ส.หน้าวัง). The main dish to eat at this restaurant is pad mee krached ruam (ผัดหมี่กระเฉดรวม), stir fried rice noodles with water mimosa. They make it so well, and it’s always delicious - especially if you like stir fried noodles, it’s a great dish.
16:34 Saphan Phut Market (สะพานพุทธ) - After going to the floating market in the morning, we decided to continue the Bangkok markets at night and we headed to Saphan Phut Market (สะพานพุทธ), which is a Thai youth clothing and hang out market. The market is always lively at night, and tonight was no different. There’s not a lot to do there, but if you’re interested in Thai youth culture, it’s a good place to visit.
21:00 Pak Khlong Talad (ปากคลองตลาด) - Known in Thai as Pak Khlong Talad (ปากคลองตลาด), or as the flower market Bangkok, it’s a giant flower distribution market that’s open 24 hours a day in Bangkok. But the best time to go is at night, and even the best time in around midnight to 3 am or so when the market is at its busiest. We got there around 10 pm and there were still plenty of flowers to see, and it was a good last stop of the night.
Day 4, visiting Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market (ตลาดน้ำคลองลัดมะยม) and eating the snakehead fish, as well as visiting a few other local markets in Bangkok, was another fun day in Bangkok.
