This is our second visit with Elephant Jungle Sanctuary in Chiang Mai - in fact, of our Top 12 Things To Do in Chiang Mai visiting and Elephant Sanctuary is our number 1!
Before you visit Chiang Mai please do your research about ethical treatment of Elephants and go to a camp or sanctuary - please don't ride the elephants! Riding of them is terrible for them and theres some really bad procedures used on baby elephants to make them subservient and broken.

Following CMU Bicycle Club to Thai Elephant Care Center in MaeSa - Vlog 017
Me and TinTin joined up with Chiang Mai University's Bicycle trip to Mae Sa Elephant camp in Mae Rim. The Changyim Tour for helping the center with food for the elephants they have in their care.
We started from Chiang Mai University and biked the 25 km's to the Elephant Care Center and back again. About 200 bikers joined this trip, and it was very well planed with police stopping traffic and a ambulance on standby. Seemed like the Elephants were happy to see us, and so were we :) Great Trip!

Worlds friendliest elephants, Maesa Elephant Camp, Chiang Mai, Thailand, Travel, Culture, exploring..The elephant shows at Maesa Elephant Camp present the ones that mainly highlight talent and ingenuity of the elephants, where you can see over 20 elephants. Watched them bathing and then going up to the elephant grounds to see the shows, where visitors are greatly fascinated and impressed with abilities of Thai elephants at Maesa Elephant Camp... (Comment) I love elephants. To spend the day feeding them, and going on a ride was amazing. I fully loved my time at Maesa. Their show is well worth it. It is truly amazing watching them paint.

The Chiang Dao Elephant Camp, Thailand
There are many elephant camps in Thailand. Some funded and run by the Thai Government while others are private. The Chiang Dao Elephant Camp is privately run and only about an hour's ride north of Chiang Mai.
There is an admission fee that entitles you to watch Elephant Bathing and an Elephant Performance. I am now enlightened (11 years after this visit,) and can only think...Elephant abuse! Read the latest National Geographic for more on this subject...

Chiang Mai; Elephant Conservation Center Lampang; Aleena
I meet young elephant Aleena for the first time. She was LA's elaphant during her mahout training days.
some info found online;
Name: Phumphuang
Sex: Female
Born: 1983
Origin
Phumphuang was donated to the Thai Elephant Conservation Center by Kanchanaburi Province, Thailand.
Nature
Phumphuang is very docile and friendly with humans, but she hates dogs.
Special Story
Phumphuang has an unusual number of toes on her feet -- 17 in all. Front right there are 5 toes, front left there are four and there are four each on her back legs. She has a perfect temperament for breeding and on 6 May 2004 she gave birth to a female baby named Aleena. Mother and baby were constantly together for three years from birth while Aleena was being weened, after which Phumphuang returned to painting again. By the way, Aleena's best friend is Big, a scraggy dog that lives at the Center. Phumphuang's mahout made a clever ploy of introducing Aleena to the young Big soon after she was born and so they naturally became friends. This way, he hopes that Phumphuang will stop her hatred of dogs.
Phumphuang has an unusual number of toes on her feet -- 17 in all.
Mahout
Phumphuang's mahout is Sawang Kamwang, who was born in Lampang September 1974 and started working as a mahout at the age of 23.

1989 Thailand, Lampang, Thai Young Elephant Training Center, TECC, National Elephant Institute
TECC sur WIKI :
The National Elephant Institute was founded as the Thai Elephant Conservation Center (TECC) in 1993. In January 2002, in order to enlarge the scope of conservation efforts and address the issues facing Thailand's elephants, it was proposed that the TECC be renamed the National Elephant Institute. It is located in Amphoe Hang Chat, Lampang Province. Chiang Mai University's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is associated with the Institute.
The main objective for the establishment of the new National Elephant Institute is to develop elephant conservation in a sustainable way and preserve local traditions for future generations. The Institute also aims to improve the tourism business, in which there is an extensive involvement of elephants in tourism-related activities, for the benefit of elephants as well as tourists. The National Elephant Institute is a World Elephant Day associate.
