Video with images of Hue a provincial capital at the foot of the Truong Son mountain near the coast of the South chinese Sea. From 1802 until 1945 the city of harmony was the residence of the emperors of the Nguyen dynasty. Traditionally it was also the cultural and educational capital of the empire which preserved its Vietnamese identity best. The Perfume river divides the city into two parts. The river has its name from the odoriferous woods on the Truong Son mountain where it originates. On the nortwestern shore is the old city with the Citadel and the remnants of the Imperial City and the Forbidden Purple City. The new city on the southeastern shore is constructed by the French. This part of the city has modern western buildings and a colonial architecture.
In the Imperial City the emperors of the Nguyen dynasty held their official ceremonies: they held audiences and performed religious rituals to preserve harmony between heaven and earth. In the past the main entrance of the Imperial City was reserved for the emperor. The entrances to the left and the right of the imperial entrance were destined for the civil and military mandarins. Soldiers, horses and elephants entered the city through the entrances at the other sides. Behind the main entrance a bridge over two lotus ponds leads to a courtyard with two terraces at different levels. In this courtyard, called the Great Courtyard, the mandarins from all parts of the empire gathered to bring their honours to the emperor. The high ranking mandarins stood on the higher terrace and low ranking officials stood on the lower terrace. The left side of the courtyard was for the civil mandarins and the right side of the courtyard was for the military officials. The courtyard was in front of the Thai Hoa Palace or the Palace of Supreme Harmony. The building has two roofs with yellow tiles and edges with dragons. The building was constructed to stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter. In the palace the emperor received foreign emissaries and other high ranking guests. It was also the place for crowning festivities, birthday festivals and other imperial ceremonies.
Behind the Thai Hoa Palace is a courtyard with a small building on the left and on the right. In this Mandarin Hall the officials prepared for the greeting ceremony in front of the Thai Hoa Palace. The courtyard is opposite the entrance of the Forbidden Purple City with the private rooms of the imperial family. The city was an imitation of the imperial court of the Chinese emperors in Beijing and reflects the introvert nature of the Vietnamese emperors. Only the emperor and his family was allowed to enter the forbidden city. Trespassers faced a death penalty. Originally the purple city, enclosed by a brick wall with seven gates, had more than hundred buildings. Many of them were destroyed by the Americans in the Vietnam War. The western quarter was reserved for the harems with the emperor's wives and concubines. In the eastern quarter were the imperial library, theatre and archives.
In the environment of Hue near the Perfume river there are two pagodas and five tombs of former emperors belonging to the Nguyen dynasty. Amongst them is the tomb of emperor Minh Mang who ruled from 1820 to 1841. The other emperors died in exile and were buried abroad. Each emperor gave detailed instructions for the design and location of his tomb after careful consultation of a diviner. The tomb and its gardens, temples and pavilions had to be in harmony with the natural surroundings. The tomb is a fine example how the imperial court at the beginning of the nineteenth century tried to survive the French colonial administration.

The Citadel and Forbidden Purple City-Hue, Vietnam (With Historical Facts)
I took a fascinating tour of an area rich in Vietnamese and American history. My guide Thanh had personally witnessed hand-to-hand combat here as a 12 year-old during the Vietnam War. Hue was the imperial capital of Vietnam from 1802-1945 and the Forbidden Purple City contained the residence of the Emperor and Royal Family. Like the Forbidden City in Beijing, only royalty and invited guests could come here. The Citadel is a walled fortress and palace that was built in the early 1800's. During the 1968 Tet Offensive and the Battle of Hue, thousands of Vietnamese and hundreds of Americans were killed during fighting here.

Imperial City Huế 2017 Hue Vietnam
The #Imperial #City (Vietnamese: #Hoàng #thành) is a walled palace within the #citadel ( #Kinh thành ) of the city of Huế, the former imperial #capital of #Vietnam. The building was built in 1362, and took 203 years to complete. Many consider this building to be a symbol of wealth and power as boars carried the materials from Hoi An.
In June 1789 Nguyễn Ánh took control of Vietnam and proclaimed himself Emperor Gia Long. His rule was recognized by China in 1804. Gia Long consulted with geomancers to decide which was the best place for a new palace and citadel to be built. After the geomancers had decided on a suitable site in Huế, building began in 1804. Thousands of workers were ordered to produce a wall and moat, 10 kilometers long. Initially the walls were earthen, but later these earthen walls were replaced by stone walls, 2 meters thick.
The citadel was oriented to face the Huong River to the east. This was different from the Forbidden City in Beijing, which faces south. The Emperor's palace is on the east side of the citadel, nearest the river. A second set of tall walls and a second moat was constructed around the Emperor's palace. Many more palaces and gates and courtyards and gardens were subsequently added. The reigns of the last Vietnamese Emperors lasted until the mid-1900s. At the time, the Purple Forbidden City had many buildings and hundreds of rooms. It suffered from termite and cyclone damage, but was still very impressive. Many bullet holes left over from the Vietnam War can be observed on the stone walls.
In the early morning hours of January 31, 1968, as part of the Tet Offensive a Division-sized force of North Vietnamese Army and Viet Cong soldiers launched a coordinated attack on Huế seizing most of the city. During the initial phases of the Battle of Hue, due to Huế's religious and cultural status, US troops were ordered not to bomb or shell the city, for fear of destroying the historic structures; but as casualties mounted in house-to-house fighting these restrictions were progressively lifted and the fighting caused substantial damage to the Imperial City. Out of 160 buildings only 10 major sites remain because of the battle, such as the Thái Hòa and Cần Thanh temples, Thế Miếu, and Hiển Lâm Các. The city was made a UNESCO site in 1993. The buildings that still remain are being restored and preserved. The latest and so far the largest restoration project is planned to conclude in 2015.
The grounds of the Imperial City are protected by fortified ramparts 2 kilometers by 2 kilometers, and ringed by a moat. The water in the moat is routed from the Perfume River through a series of sluice gates. This enclosure is the citadel (Kinh thành).
Inside the citadel is the Imperial City (Hoàng thành), with a perimeter wall some 2.5 kilometers in length.
Within the Imperial City is the Purple Forbidden City (Tử cấm thành), a term similar to the #Forbidden #City in #Beijing. Access to the innermost enclosure was restricted to the imperial family.

About Hue
The Citadel Complex of Hue, set up by Nguyen Dynasty from 1805 to 1945, is now one amongst the relics of the Hue ancient Capital – the World Cultural Heritage, capturing much of tourists’ attention.
The poetic and beautiful Hue of Vietnam was chosen to be the capital of the Southern Kingdom under Nguyen Lords’ Dynasty, and officially became the nation's capital under Tay Son Dynasty, King Quang Trung. The citadel palace complex is located on the North bank of Huong River (Perfume River), inside Hue city. It is a huge complex covering an area of 520ha and comprising three circles of ramparts, Kinh Thanh Hue (Hue Capital Citadel), Hoang Thanh (Royal Citadel) and Tu Cam Thanh (Forbidden Citadel). It was said to be protected by the two sand dunes: The Con Hen and Con Da Vien on the Perfume River, as dragon on the left, tiger on the right. If you are in Hue, please join us in this small journey exploring the beautiful feudal palace, the inspiration for numerous artists ever stepping inside!
The very first stop-over is the exterior circle, the Kinh Thanh Hue (Hue capital citadel), which started to be constructed in 1805 under the reign of Emperor Gia Long and was completed in 1832 under the sovereignty of Emperor Ming Mang. Over the past 200 years, it has still maintained original with nearly 140 small and large constructions. With a square shape, it is almost 10km in circumference, 6m high, 21m thick, with 10 entrances. On the top of the walls, 24 bastions are established for defensive purposes. Besides, the Citadel has an ancillary gate connecting the Tran Binh Bastion called the Tran Binh Mon (Peaceful protector Gate).
Now we get further into the second circle, the Hoang Thanh (Royal citadel), also the most important part of the Citadel, which was built in 1804 but totally completed in 1833, under King Ming Mang’s reign. The Citadel, which is more than 600m long for each side, was built with bricks of 4m high, and 1m thick. Around the citadel is a protecting trench system. Tourists can get access to the Imperial Citadel through four entrance gates. In the past, Ngo Mon Gate was only reserved for the King. Royal Citadel consists of more than 100 fascinating architectural works divided into numerous sections:
Section of the Ngo Mon Gate and the Thai Hoa Palace: used for various grand ceremonies.
Section for placing shrines of the Kings under Nguyen Dynasty: Trieu Mieu, Thai Mieu, Hung Mieu, The Mieu and Phung Tien Temples.
Section of internal affairs office: Storehouse for precious objects, workshop for manufacturing various useful articles.
Section of the Kham Van Palace and Co Ha Garden: is where the princes studied or relaxed.
Passing through Hoang Thanh, we enter Tu Cam Thanh (Forbidden Citadel). Situated inside the Imperial Citadel complex, behind the Throne Palace, the Purple Forbidden Citadel was reserved for Emperor and his family. Built in the early 1803 under reign of Emperor Gia Long, it was initially named Cung Thanh. In 1821, it was renamed into the today’s Tu Cam Thanh.
This citadel part was built with brick walls of 3.72m high, 0.72m thick, and about 1,230m in circumference. Its front and back sides are 324m long respectively, while the left and right sides are both more than 290m long. The whole site consists of 50 architectural constructions of different sizes and 7 gates for facilitating the entrance and exit. Dai Cung Mon (the Great Palace Gate) is in the front side, only reserved for the Kings. Can Chanh Palace was the place for daily working of Emperors. Can Thanh (Emperor's Private Palace), Khon Thai Residence (Queen's Private Apartment) were reserved for the Queens. There are still many other sections, for instance, Duyet Thi Duong house (Royal Theatre), Thuong Thien (the kitchen for the Kings' food), Thai Binh Lau (King's reading room), all of which are of great architectural value, luring uncountable visitors who are interested in feudal architecture.
Should you ever come inside the citadel, taking a look into the special feudal relics of immense architectural and cultural values, you will surely more or less love the traditional and classical side of Vietnam. As time goes by, thousands of changes have occurred, the precious historical and classical beauty of the nation would never be gone!
