More about Thaipusam:
- Thaipusam (or Thaipoosam) is a festival celebrated by the Tamil and Malayali communities
- The word Thaipusam is a combination of the name of the month, Thai, and the name of a star, Pusam. This particular star is at its highest point during the festival.
- The festival commemorates the occasion when Parvati gave Murugan a Vel spear so he could defeat the evil demon Soorapadman.
- As surprising as it might sound, devotees don't bleed while pierced. It's believed it's due to their faith

► WHO AM I?
Short answer: I am a Brazilian journalist living in the United States. After traveling the world working with sports, news, and events for over 15 years, I realized that what I really love is the travel part of it all. So I exchanged life in the newsrooms and stadiums for the daily challenge of being an independent content producer. I created this channel to share the beauties of the world... stuff that for so long I only kept to myself. Also to help people planning similar trips and to inspire more people to venture out and enjoy life!
Long answer: ????
P.S.: The guy who occasionally appears in the vlogs is my husband, Gordon. He is Canadian-American and is extremely shy, that's why he's behind the camera most of the time ;-)

Thaipusam Festival in Singapore 2018 Highlights
There are many Indians living in Singapore and therefore, you will find the Thaipusam Festival celebrated here every year.
Thaipusam has become a major celebration, in fact it is one of the biggest celebrations amongst Hindus in Singapore.
The festival is dedicated Lord Subramanian who answers prayers, and is also a day of penance. The people who make their vows here show gratitude by undergoing the sacrificial self-mortification during the ceremonial event. The Tamil Hindu community has made this an important festival date in their calendar.
During the Thaipusam Festival, religious people undertake several rituals and rites. There are participants and devotees who carry out sacrificial acts of prayers. The cultural event involves male Indians praying to Subramanian while carrying Kavadis to show gratitude. This is a giant steel-made structure rack almost 40 kilograms in weight and decorated using flowers and fruits. Men attach it to their bodies using hooks and skews piercing through their skin.
Before anyone takes this ritual, they have to do some preparations in the form of a sacrificial act. First, you must observe a strict mental and physical discipline. It is because the Thaipusam Festival is a celebration of one month of prayer. People eat strict vegetarian diet and do other ritual practices like remaining pure by avoiding sex.
On the day of Thaipusam, the participant has to walk for almost two miles to reach the Sri Permal Temple or through the Tank Road Temple. When the faithful reach there, the family members start removing the metallic structures. The ceremony is witnessed by supporters who surround these groups, while saying prayers and giving the encouragement.

It is celebrated not only in countries where the Tamil community constitutes a majority but also in countries where Tamil communities are smaller such as Singapore

Overwhelmed by the Thaipusam Hindu Festival (2019) at Batu Caves - Once in a lifetime experience!
The Thaipusam Festival at Batu Caves in Kuala Lumpur, is one of the largest, most colorful, most intense, and most powerful events on the Hindu religious calendar. It celebrates the day Lord Murugan (the Hindu god of war) received his divine spear, or Vel, from his goddess mother Parvati.
I was lucky to arrive in Kuala Lumpur just one day before this important festival took place. I didn't plan it that way. In fact, I had no idea the festival was taking place. But my hostel is located just steps away from the Hindu temple from where the festival procession departs. And the noise and activity alerted everyone in the hostel that something very special was taking place.
I'd read about Thaipusam and seen pictures of it for many years, and now I had the opportunity to attend. I knew there would be large crowds, lots of noise, and heat and humidity, and I did my best to mentally prepare for the scene to come. But, really, nothing can prepare you for the spectacle that is Thaipusam at Batu Caves.

Thaipusam is a festival celebrated by Hindus of Tamil.
Thai Pusam occurs on the full moon day in the Tamil month, Thai (January–February)
Thaipusam meaning is actually thai that means 10th, and pusam means “when the moon is at brightest”
It is celebrated on the day when the star “Pusam” occurs.
Thaipusam is a day of prayers Dedicated to Lord Subramaniam, also known as Lord Murugan, a major South Indian god.
Devotees prepare for the Thaipusam at least a month in advance. They themselves ready spiritually with prayer and fasting before penance like carrying a kavadi.
The basic kavadi.
And sharp skewers are pierced through the tongues, cheeks and bodies of kavadi-carrier devotees.
Women and some men are carry vessels of milk.
Thaipusam was a public holiday in Singapore until 1968.
Very deep religious festival is a spectacular sight widely because of the procession of bare-footed.
The well organised festival, the procession starts from Srinivasa Perumal temple to Sri.Thandayuthapani temple.
Dedicated volunteers help everyone with a smiling face and they keep food, water, cold and hot drinks everything through out the way to temple and also “annadhanam” tasty temple lunch inside temple dining hall.
“Arohara, Aroharraa...” Chanting everywhere around the temple area.
Don’t miss Thaipusam, Singapore.
