Singthong Explains Pak Ou Caves in Luang Prabang
Near Pak Ou the Tham Ting and the Tham Theung are caves overlooking the Mekong River, 25 km to the north of Luang Prabang, Laos. They are a group of two caves on the west side of the Mekong river, about two hours upstream from the center of Luang Prabang, and are frequently visited by tourists.
Pak Ou Caves in Laos
Friday (3/2/2020):- The visit to Pak Ou caves was by a slow Snake Boat .We set sail at 0840 hrs and after a brief stoppage at Ban Xanghai village (Whisky Village) finally reached Pak Ou caves after 2 hrs of sailing.By road Pak Ou caves is approximately 29 Kms from Luang Prabang. There are two different caves inside this small hill known as Tham Ting by locals. My first visit was to the Lower Pak Ou Caves situated inside a cave up a long flight of stairs from the ferry berth. The caves got its name due to its proximity to Pak Ou village .This Lower Cave of which i have produced this video is the most popular of the 2 caves on this small hill.Since the introduction of Buddhism in this region locals have been arriving at this cave and placing
Buddha statues and now there is a collection of over 4000 Buddha statues of various sizes in the cave. After viewing this cave made my way up the diagonal flight of stairs through the hill forest onto the Upper Cave. It was a real tough trek walking up a flight of 100 steps to the Upper Cave. The entrance doorway to the Upper Cave is made of ornate metalwork and is beautiful and a refreshing view after the ascent to the top.Traditionally in the past during Lao New Year the Royal Family along with a contingent of monks used to travel to visit this Upper Cave to pour water over a sacred Buddha statue as part of the Pi Mi celebration rituals. On entering this cave found it in total darkness unlike the Lower Cave and thanks to my torchlight got to view the Buddha and other statues inside this cave. :- Seafarer/Blogger/Traveller Rudolph.A.Furtado

LUANG PRABANG, Laos - Tam Ting Caves and Night Market - BeautyLovesTech Day 2
Luang Prabang, Laos - Tam Ting Caves and Night Market - BeautyLovesTech Day 2
Our second full day in Luang Prabang. We're ready for some more adventure! Today we're going to Ban Pak Ou to see the Tam Ting Caves. We took a slow boat ride about 30km North on the Mekong River. Did I mention it was slow? Very slow and a little bit chilly we had to use a blanket. Very nice scenery along the way, but after a while we took a nap. It took about 2hrs to get there. Once we arrived, we climbed up many stairs to see the Tam Ting Shrines and caves. Very interesting and beautiful to see. Many parts were nearly pitch dark and we could've really used a flash light. But we managed to walk through using the light on our iPhones :) When I saw something interesting, like a shrine, I would take 2 photos with the flash camera. First photo to see what was there with the flash, and second photo to frame the shot better. When we left the caves, looking across the Mekong River I could see elephants walking about. We would've loved to go see them, but we had other plans for the day. When we got back to Luang Prabang, we cleaned up and relaxed at a nice little restaurant right along the riverside and enjoyed a few Beer Laos and watched the sunset. After that we walked around the corner to Sisavangvong Road to explore the night market. We saw many handcrafted goods along the main road, and food markets along the side roads. Another full day of adventure! We loved it all!
