Thanboddhay Pagoda in Monywa (Myanmar)
The Thanboddhay Pagoda in Monywa constitutes one of the primary tourist attractions in Myanmar. A rainbow of colours flash in the sunlight from the glass mosaic set in the surface of the spires gives it a magical aura. The main stupa contains Buddha images of all sizes, from inch-high ones set in rows upon ascending rows on all available wall space, both interior and exterior. Huge images are enshrined within. The total number of Buddha images in this pagoda complex is nearly 600,000, or to be exact, 582,363.

21 Thanboddhay Pagoda, Monywa Disneyland of Buddhas, Myanmar (Burma)
We Said Go Travel About 20km South-east of Monywa built between 1939 and 1952, Thanboddhay Pagoda has over 500,000 Buddha images. Between the colors and the style it looks like a cross between Pastel Disneyland and a giant birthday cake. It was near the Standing Buddha so we went first to Thanboddhay and then to Boddhi-Tataung. In the morning we went to the Hop Win Daung Caves. (see the other movies)

Myanmar - Monywa Phowintaung (2016)
Phowintaung, also spelt as Hpowindaung, Powintaung, Po Win Taung, is a Buddhist cave complex located approximately 25 kilometers west of Monywa, Monywa District, Sagaing Region, Northern Myanmar. It is located on the western bank of the Chindwin River. The name of the complex means Mountain of Isolated Solitary Meditation.
The complex contains 947 small and large richly decorated caves. It is carved into a sandstone outcrop and contains numerous carved Buddha statues and mural paintings of geometric patterns and Jataka stories. The statues and paintings have been dated to between the 14th and 18th centuries.
And there are monkeys.

A completely amazing fairytale temple near Monya. One of my favourite Buddhist Temples in the world!
22 Monywa Standing Buddha, Myanmar (Burma)
We Said Go Travel During our drive we could begin to see the 420ft tall Buddha and the lying Buddha which is also enormous. It is the largest Standing Buddha in Asia but perhaps in the world. Prior to arriving at the complex with the enormous Buddhas, we saw a garden of Buddhas sitting under their umbrellas. We climbed up staircase after staircase (which reminded us all of Mandalay Hill) and found the shopping pavilions closing up. At last we reached the platform for the lying Buddha around the back you can enter the lying Buddha in his left posterior. We ascended more stairs and reached the colossal Standing Buddha with its vast pavilion which at nearly sunset was empty. The stunning view of the area with the last rays of the sun made this brobidigian Buddha seem even more incredible and golden. There was construction on the giant Buddha but you can go up to the 17th floor of the 40 stories.
Boddhi-Tataung (1000 Buddhas) is four kilometers from Thanboddhay Pagoda in a grove of Banyan trees, which each have a Buddha image at its base. A good place for meditation and thinking. See the other videos of Thanboddhay Pagoda and Hop Win Daung Caves where we went earlier on the same day in Monywa, Myanmar (Burma).

From Monywa we head for the local market. One of the highlights of Monywa is the Thanboddhay Pay, a magnificent stupa surround by 845 small stupas similar to Buddha Gaya. We visit the Standing Giant Buddha and 90m long reclining buddha. We head for Mandalay and on the wasy visit Ywataung Village renowned for its silversmiths. Sagaing Hill with its numerous pagodas and monasteries was a plus.

Welcome to MONYWA - Myanmar
A short montage travel video of our trip to Monywa featuring clips from the town itself, from the giant Monywa buddha and the Phowintaung caves.
In order to get to these places we hired a taxi for the day for $35 (pricey but as Monywa has little in the way of touurist infastructure there weren't many other options) It would be possible to travel using a moped to and from as the distances are not too great.
Featuring clips from my up and coming feature film 'One and a Half Turns' - subscribe for more info.
We reached Monyway from Mandalay bus station which has sever buses daily and went on to Pakokku again by local bus. We were surprised at how easy it was to get to and from places, just ask, people are always up for helping.
We also stayed in the Shwe Taung Tarn hotel, it was the cheapest place we could find and one of the worst places we stayed duing our budget 5 months in South East Asia. For 2 nights it wasn't a big issue and it was cheap but only stay if you have no other option.
