Thangamale Bird Sanctuary to idalgashinna - Srilanka
The first self-organized backwoods trail trekking(2013 Oct) of ours. The trek started behind Adisham Bungalow which is about 3kms far from Haputale town. It was quite walking along the footpath with on the right-hand side a sharp drop and far below railway while the left-hand side was the forest. We cloud to reach the end of the trail at Idalgashinna side within an hour, then we followed the railway to reach the Idalgashinna railway station, and there was a tunnel we had to pass through during the railway walk.
Unfortunately, due to bad weather, the next train was delayed and we had to go to Idalgashinna village and catch a Tuk. After 6kms on a messy road in a Tuk, we could reach Boralanda - Haputale Bus route.

Trekking through Thangamale Sanctuary | තංගමලේ අභයභූමිය, Idalgashinna to Haputale (2019)
This is the Video Journey of our Trek through Thangamale Sanctuary located between Idalgashinna and Haputale parallel to the Upcountry Railway Line and bordering the famous Adisham Bungalow.
Thangamale Sanctuary is governed by the Wildlife Department and is popular among trekkers and bird watchers. This forestry trail may have been used in the past to connect the rural villages of Idalgashinna, Ohiya and Udaweriya to Haputale. It seems the same trail continues through Idalgashinna towards Udaweriya branching off to Ohiya and Kalupahana there.
Idalgashinna Mountain, Idalgashinna Railway Station, Idalgashinna Rock, Railway Tunnel 36, Beragala Kanda aka Wewekele Mountain and Adisham Bunngalow are the main attractions.
In addition to them you can enjoy mountains all the way to Nuwara Eliya such as Piduruthalagala, Kikiliyamana, Haggala, Boralanda, Udaweriya, etc. On the other side, Diyathalawa, Fox Hill, Nayabedda, Namunukula, Narangala, etc. can be seen.

I’ve done this video to make you aware of the beauty of this place and please don’t misuse this information in order to ruin it. I’ve spent so much of time/money bringing this to you so that you may enjoy it.
I also have a very kind and humble request to make. Should you ever visit this place, you’re kindly requested to adhere to the following in order to save our Mother Nature not only for the future generations but for the current one as well:
* Avoid careless/irresponsible/money-oriented/mega tour groups or organizers.
* Travel in small groups as Mother Nature can’t afford so many footprints at once. Stick to the designated trails or hardback surfaces at all times.
* Minimize the use of polythene/plastic and do bring them back. Please don’t burn them in the wilderness. Even organic/bio-degradable waste is harmful to the nature and animals. Please stick to the simple rule of “if you pack it in, pack it out”.
* Use reusable water bottles, plates and cups. Even paper cups/plates are harmful and take years to decompose.
* Remain quiet and vigilant. Don’t disturb the tranquility of the nature. Respect wildlife and don’t disturb them in anyway. Also be considerate of other trekkers.
* Please collect and bring any litter/garbage left behind by other careless travellers.
* Don’t light fires unnecessarily and do try to use portable cookers instead of using firewood when camping. If you must, only use firewood on the ground and don’t cut any trees for this.
* Don’t bring any plants back with you or cut any trees/branches unnecessarily..
* Don’t use soap/ shampoo when bathing in natural streams as they contaminate them and kill wildlife.
* Don’t do anything that harms the Mother Nature.

Trek to Thotalagala View Point, Haputale (2018) - 1 of 3
Thotalagala also known as Thotulagalla is one of the not-so-commonly-visited view point off Haputale along Dambethenna Road. It's located at an elevation of 1,432m and immediately afterwards is a sheer precipice of around 700-800m towards Walawe Basin where Beragala-Koslanda-Wellawaya Road runs.
It's approximately 4km from Haputale, close to the Thotulagalla Bio Tea Factory and on a clear day would offer panoramic views towards Walawe Basin, Beragala, Haldummulla, Idalgashinna Mountain Range, Gommolliya Mountain Range, etc.
Sadly when we visited it was so misty and there were no views on offer. So this turned into a recce mission and will have to visit again to see the spectacular views from this place.
Nearby key tourist attractions would be, Dambethenna Tea Factory, Richmond Lake, Surangamuni View Point, Lipton's Seat and St. Catherine's Seat.

A walk from Adisham to Idalgashinna Railway Station
Meeriyathenna Mountain / Udaweriya Peak 2 | මීරියතැන්න කඳු මුදුනට - 2,020m (2019)
We climbed in the previous video to the highest point in Uva which surpassed Namunukula Mountain by a mere 24m. Though it was not a proper mountain compared to others, we called it Udaweriya Peak 1.
This video journey covers our trek up to the summit of the adjoining peak, aptly called Udaweriya Peak 2 but also known as Meeriyathenna Mountain.
She is at 2,020m slightly behind Namunukula in the third place in Uva Province. This hike was followed by our trek from Idalgashinna to Udaweriya and Udaweriya Peak 2. Those videos are already online.

The Idalgashinna Pass is a prominent geological feature in the area; Idalgashinna was regarded as a key entrance to the upland country, with the Portuguese attempting to use the pass in their wars against the Kingdom of Kandy in the 16th century. Most of the people visit this place by train. But I visited with my friend Sithija by bike. That was a great experience and the road was not perfect but good :-) There is a beautiful mountain with a nice view, very scenic. Anybody can hike easily it takes around 30 minutes or 20 from the station. Camping capability is limited, only two camps can be done comfortably. If you are able to climb that small rocky mountain there is another space for another camp. What a beautiful place, I love that cool and windy surround.

Adisham Bungalow is a country house near Haputale, in the Badulla District, Sri Lanka. At present it houses the Adisham Monastery a congregation of St. Sylvester. The house was built in 1931 by an English aristocrat and planter Sir Thomas Villiers.
Maintenance of the monastery garden which retains its old English charm, with well-preserved lawns, beautiful flower beds, evergreens, and majestic trees, is also a costly affair, and is managed by funds collected at the gate, and is therefore not a mere commercial venture.Visitors are welcome to visit the monastery from 9.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. only on the weekends.

Trek from Idalgashinna to Udaweriya off Ohiya (2018) - 3 of 7
This video series was taken when we trekked along one of the not-so-popular trekking routes between Idalashinna and Udaweriya off Ohiya.
Once again, it turned out to be a very rewarding trek and we enjoyed the isolated trek quite a lot. However little did we expect to walk through hurricane force winds over the next 12km from Udaweriya to Bambarakanda. That video series will come after this.
