Thangassery | Kerala | India
Travelling to the different parts of the country shows you little remnants of the past. Thangassery is one such landmark town in the city of Quilon. Here you will see architecture and landmarks of the colonial past. In this video we look at the Light house This is an iconic landmark structure of Thangasserry, or Thangasseri or Tangy as they call it locally.
The beaches in this video has been captured from around the bus stand. The beach has changed so much; you know if you have travelled here earlier. Now with the breakwater project and the changing technology the beaches and boats have changed quite a bit. I am sure it will change again, so this video of 2012 can be used as a reference for the future.

Tangasseri port on the Arabian Sea: ancient shipping corridor in India
Tangasseri or Thangassery is a thickly populated beach area on the shores of the Arabian Sea in Kollam city, Kerala, India. It is located about 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) from the city center and 71 kilometres (44 mi) from Thiruvanthapuram, the state capital. The splendid cultural and historical background of Thangassery harbour often makes it a pride land mark of Kollam. Archaeologists recently discovered Chinese coins and other artifacts from the cost which reveals the splendid historic background of Thangassery. Kollam Port also making Thangassery an important place in the world maritime map.
The fishery harbour at Tangasseri is a basin for traditional fishermen, achieved by the construction of two breakwaters. The length of the main breakwater is 2100 m and of the leeward breakwater 550 m. This provides sufficient beach length for landing facilities for all operational craft.

Shankumugam Beach & Mermaid Statue-ശംഖുമുഖം ബീച്ച് | Explore India
Shankumugham Beach is a beach in Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala, south India. The beach is on the western side of Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) city and very near to Trivandrum International Airport.
The vast stretch of white sand and the serene atmosphere, away from the crowd in the city, provide all the ingredients for relaxation and for spending an ideal evening. There is also a “Star Fish Restaurant” with eating kiosks and open-air theatre with car parking facilities. Good food can be enjoyed at the Indian Coffee House, just across the beach, which is also a vantage point for enjoying the sunset. Unfortunately, the beach is not well maintained with garbage littering the entire area.
Shanghumugham beach is considered as the ‘Arattukadavu’ of Sri Ananthapadmanabhan – The presiding deity of the city. Thousands of Hindus perform ‘Bali Tharpanam’ during special occasions. Shanghu mugham is the prime location for Ganesh Nimarjan at the time of Vinayaka Chathurthi.
On the Arattu day at Thiruvananthapuram, images of Lord Padmanabhawamy, Lord Narasimha, and Lord Krishna are taken in procession to the Laccadive Sea at Shanghumugham beach. His Highness the former Maharaja of Travancore,Sri Uthradom Thirunal Marthanda Varma, will lead the procession with the royal sword in hand, who will be escorted by members of the Royal family, armed guards, temple authorities, mounted police, and officers. After the ceremonial bath in Shanghumugham, images are taken back in procession which marks the conclusion of the festival.
The skating school here offers the coaching on skating. Adjacent to the skating school is an indoor sports complex which provides facilities for Badminton and Table Tennis.
Sagarakanyaka or Jalakanyaka
The sculpture of Jalakanyaka – Mermaid by Kanayi Kunhiraman is an added attraction. This giant statue is more than 35m long. The ‘Jawaharlal Nehru Park of Traffic signs for children’ is situated here, which is helpful for the children to understand the traffic rules while playing in the park. The park also provides cycling facilities for small children.
The military airport of the Southern Air Command of the Indian Air Force is situated at Shankumugham Beach.
Veli Tourist Village is near from the Shankumugham Beach boating facilities are offered at this picnic spot. Speed boats, restaurants and well landscaped gardens are available.

This the the beach as it looks in 2012, It is quite different from what it was many years ago. I'm sure it will be different many years from now with all the development taking place in the surrounding regions. The fishing boats now you see have replaced the traditional wooden boats make from tree trunks and multiple people use to row the boats while going fishing. 10 to 15 years from now the scene will be distinctly different, I am sure this video will be a testimony to it.
The bell you hear is from Holy Cross Parish across the street.

Boat ride in Arabian Sea - Neendakara, Kerala
Fishermen in action in Arabian sea as seen from Neendakara beach in Kerala. Neendakara is a famous fishing harbour located around 8 km from Kollam district of Kerala, India.
Neendakara Port as the name indicates is one of the longest port situated at the heart of Quilon on the Quilon - Alleppy High way. While one moves over the bridge across the bay , one can see hundreds of fishing boats and fishermen around. Very vibrant place. Sometimes you will get rotten smell of fish while passing through the place. Nearby places are having small fishing and packaging industries focused on export. Quilon is very famous for prawn export . It will be a wonderful experience to see unloading of fish from boats . One can get fresh fish over there. A must see place in Quilon.
