Thao Suranari (Thai: ท้าวสุรนารี) is the royally bestowed title of Lady Mo, (also known as Ya Mo (ย่าโม, Grandma Mo) (1771–1852), who was the wife of the deputy governor of Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat), the stronghold of Siamese control over its Laotian vassals. In 1826 Vientiane King Anouvong invaded Siam seeking complete independence. Anuvong's forces seized the city of Nakhon Ratchasima by a ruse when the governor was away. The invaders evacuated the inhabitants, intending to resettle them in Laos. Lady Mo is credited with saving her people by harassing the enemy. Varying stories describe her either getting the invading soldiers drunk, or leading a rebellion of the prisoners on the way back to Vientiane. The generally accepted version is that, when the Lao invaders ordered the women to cook for them, Lady Mo requested knives so that food might be prepared. That night, when the invaders were asleep, she gave the knives to the imprisoned men. They surprised the Lao troops, who fled, and the prisoners escaped. Thai King Rama III soon sent an army in pursuit, led by General Sing Singhaseni (สิงห์ สิงหเสนี). He defeated Anuvoung's forces in three days of fighting and completely destroyed Anuvoung's capital city of Vientiane.
King Rama III awarded her the title Thao Suranari, (or Lady Suranari – the brave lady) in recognition of her courageous acts.
A statue of Thao Suranari stands in the centre of Nakhon Ratchasima, and is a popular object of devotion. A festival in her honour is held each year at the end of March and the beginning of April. The statue was designed by Phra Thewaphinimmit (พระเทวาภินิมมิต) (1888–1942) and sculpted by Silpa Bhirasri. Thao Suranari's statue was placed next to the Chumphon Gate of the city wall on January 15, 1934.

Thao Suranari Monument is a memorial statue to the Thai heroine named by locals ‘Ya Mo’. Originally, Thao Suranari was Khunying Mo, the wife of the assistant governor of Nakhon Ratchasima. In 1826, Chao Anuwong of Vientiane seized Khorat and Khunying Mo rallied villagers to fight against Chao Anuwong’s troop. After the victorious battle, King Rama III promoted her to Thao Suranari. So, the statue is built to honor her warrior deed. Every year, during 23 March to 3 April, there is a festival to remind people of her bravery, locals will sing Khorat songs and other traditional folk music to celebrate.

Nakhon Ratchasima often shortened to Korat or Khorat is one of the north-eastern provinces of Thailand. The capital of the province is The City of Nakhon Ratchasima located in Muang Nakhon Ratchasima District.
Archeological evidence has discovered that there were two ancient towns that later became named Sema and Nakhon Raj which currently are in Sung Noen district, 32 km west of present-day Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat). Probably, before the fourteenth century, the location of Nakhon Ratchasima was under the Khmer empire's sphere while another town to the north, Phimai, was likely more important.
From 1656-1688 King Narai of Ayutthaya Kingdom ordered a new Korat to be built, to guard Ayutthaya 's northeastern frontier. Nakhon Ratchasima from then on was mentioned in old Ayutthaya's chronicles and its legal documents as a second - class' city of the kingdom. Its governor was named and ruled the city as a dynasty Nakhon Ratchasima engaged directly in Ayutthaya's internal struggle.

Korat - Thao Suranari Monument at Night Thailand

Thailand Life and Travel: Nakhon Ratchasima(Korat), Thailand, Yamo Festival by Rural Thai TV.
In this video I give a tour of the city festival in Korat (Nakhon Ratchasima), Thailand. The festival takes place in the middle of the city usually referred to as Yamo. The festival is held for 12 days before Songkran festival. The festival honors Thao Suranari; a famous Thai female warrior who successfully defended ancient Siam against a Lao invasion in 1826.
I first take a Tuk tuk into the festival commenting on the various plants, flowers, and fruit trees that are for sale. Then I do a 360 degree view of the square and the Suranari statue, talking about its history then I show you a glimpse of the snake show and tour some the streets and areas of the festival. Including a light walk and canal. I jam out to various forms of Thai traditional music and catch the end of some Traditional Thai dancing. I end the tour at the restored city gates of Korat. Please enjoy another production of Rural Thai TV.
