Paphos Cyprus local area
Paphos
This south-west corner of Cyprus has an ambience all of its own. This is the kingdom of Aphrodite, the goddess of love, and her presence seems to linger. Paphos itself is really two towns; Ktima on the cliff and Kato Paphos by the sea. The one is unchanged over centuries and thoroughly Cypriot while the other has expanded over the last decade from a sleepy fishing village and harbour into a bustling, busy, sprawling cosmopolitan resort which is still growing. Roman Paphos was the island's capital and the 3rd century mosaics here are the finest in the Mediterranean. The atmosphere is fun loving and friendly, with plenty of bars, pubs, discos, a few nightclubs and innumerable eating places providing a choice of Italian cuisine to sizzling souvlaki off the spit. The coastline to the north is peppered with small sandy coves. The area's best beach is a 15 minute drive away at Coral Bay. Paphos is an ideal centre from which to explore this region of wild coastline, unspoilt hillside villages and natural beauty. Paphos combines both culture and entertainment in a conveniently sized package. In Paphos you will find some of Cyprus' most stunning archaeological gems such as its Roman mosaics and Tomb of the Kings. Cultivated bananas grow in profusion along the south-western coast, which narrows to the Akamas Peninsula - one of the island's last unspoilt wildernesses and home to flora and fauna species found only on Cyprus. While Limassol is brash and Larnaca is demure, Paphos is quite friendly and is one of Cyprus' most desirable cities. Kato Paphos (Lower Paphos) is home to the greatest number of archaeological sites on the island.
Coral Bay
11 kilometres to the north of Paphos and 3 kilometres below the friendly hillside village of Peyia is Coral Bay - the best natural Blue Flag beach in the area. This is an established resort with many villas set apart from one another above a wide curve of dark golden sand. The summer heat is often tempered by a gentle breeze. The sea is shallow and children can play safely. During the busier months, water sports for hire include pedalos, water skiing, banana boats, jet skis and windsurfing.
Peyia
A very large friendly village - now designated a town with its own municipality. Peyia is tucked away in the hills about 3.5kms from Coral Bay and 15kms from Paphos. There are several coffee shops and welcoming taverna's which provide simple but excellent food. A picturesque drive north along winding roads through the Peyia forest and pretty villages brings you to the Akamas peninsula and the beaches of Latchi.
Polis and Latchi
Polis is on the wide Chrysohou Bay that runs along the north-west sweep of Cyprus, ideal for walks and offering stunning views to both sides of the island. Its attraction lies in it being quieter and a less developed region.
Polis is much smaller and far more intimate than Paphos - the razzmatazz of mass tourism has not quite reached here yet. The northwest also gives easy access to the Paphos Mountains and has some interesting villages such as Droushia, Neo Chorio, Pomos and Pyrgos. Latchi with its coastal paved walk is the picturesque harbour of Polis - known for its fresh fish. In the past it served as a small port for shipping carobs. The old stone carob warehouses have been converted into restaurants, fish taverns and places of recreation. From Latchi, travellers to Polis can go on short sea cruises to the Akamas.
Pissouri
Pissouri is an attractive and friendly village to the East of Paphos. It is situated in the principal vine growing area with sultana grapes covering the surrounding countryside. This south-facing village set high up on the hillside about 1,000ft above the sea and commands the most magnificent view of some 20 miles of Mediterranean coastline. To the south and east there are panoramic views of the coast, across vineyards, olive and carob trees. To the north one can see the majestic Troodos Mountains. Pissouri is situated just off the main Paphos to Limassol road. Pissouri Village has a lovely flower-filled central square for pedestrians only. There is a Greek Orthodox Church, a bakery, postal agency, banks and small supermarkets. Several family-run taverna's and restaurants serve excellent fresh food at competitive prices. In the summer months the village holds a Cyprus Night in the square every Wednesday evening. There's food and traditional Cypriot dancing; everyone is welcome!

Polis and Latchi Marina
The Polis / Latchi area is the most scenic part of Cyprus and not overbuilt like some other areas. It is a 30 minute drive from Paphos and 45 minutes from the airport.
This area has many good sandy beaches, beautiful countryside, and adjoins the unspoilt Akamas National Park, with its rugged coastline.
The leading estate agent specialising in this area is A20 Real Estate with two offices in the area
Polis is a traditional market town with paved streets, a wide range of tavernas (many situated around the attractive town square), restaurants, shops and medical facilities.
A five minute drive from Polis will take you to the beaches and the popular Marina at Latchi, where you can relax on the quayside, in one of the many fish restaurants - and watch the local fishermen returning with your evening meal. Latchi offers a wide range of water sports as well as individual boat hire, or you can take a short trip on a larger boat to the stunning Blue Lagoon, where you can swim, scuba dive, and then enjoy a relaxing BBQ on the boat.
Just outside Latchi is the Anassa Hotel which is considered to be the best hotel in Cyprus.
A short drive will take you into the local hills where there are many quaint villages and tavernas serving traditional Cypriot food, and local wine.
The area offers a wide range of activities, including cycling, horse riding, water sports, as well as hiking in the Akamas Nature Reserve or the Paphos Pine Forest. Alternatively take a jeep safari and explore the Akamas Nature Reserve. For total relaxation enjoy the new Spa facility and Hotel which has just opened in Latchi.
For the golf enthusiast, there is Minthis Hills golf course which is a 20 minute drive away. Construction has just started on 2 new PGA golf courses at Argaka, just outside Polis. One course has been designed by Jack Nicklaus and the other by Gary Player.

The villa was very nice, clean and perfect size for us. The pool was fantastic and the owners provided us with beach towels as we had not packed any.
Enjoy the sound of the sea from this spacious 210 sq. m beachside villa, idyllically situated within a large 2000 sq. m pretty garden. Its wonderful beachside position is set beside a small cluster of villas, just 2 minutes’ walk to the beautiful undeveloped 2km long beach. As this beach is not signposted it rarely gets busy, and when the visitors leave, you should have a stretch all to yourselves.
The pool gets all day sunshine, and the sunsets here are panoramic, constantly changing the colours of the Akamas hills. If you are lucky, you may experience a moonrise over the sea, another benefit of this open aspect. The villa enjoys breath-taking far reaching sea views around the curve of Chrysochou Bay towards the dramatic cliffs of Pomos to the right, and to the wild Akamas National Park on the left.
There are no villas directly in front of the poolside, to the right or behind the villa, due to strict building regulations, so the partly fenced poolside offers privacy, without losing the magnificent sea views. The private pool has Roman steps and a handrail, and the excellent baby pool with baby seat is to the side. There is a wooden pergola at the front, overlooking the sea, which provides shade in the morning, and is a lovely spot for breakfast. Wi-Fi, table tennis and billiard tables complete the picture. The garden is fenced, and children must be accompanied at all times.
Excellent waterfront fish tavernas can be sampled at Latchi Marina (2.3km), along with a small selection of shops and supermarkets. There are 2 local taverns nearby next to the beach, 600m and 1km. You can hire a small boat with cool box or take a mini cruise, at our discounted rates.
The Baths of Aphrodite and start of the Akamas National Park with its crystal clear blue lagoon and variety of walking trails is 2.3km.
Despite being a town, Polis (5km) has retained the relaxed feel of a village, with an interesting mix of old and new, and has a wide variety of shops and restaurants.
The location of this luxurious house is private yet not isolated, and ideal for couples and families. We offer up to10% off the rates for 2 - 4 persons including children, except 20 July to 31 August. Ignore the higher rate when booking.

Villa Nicolas was probably the best appointed most characterful villa we have ever stayed in. The pool area was stunning - complete privacy surrounded by lemon trees and jasmine - idyllic.
Experience a different world of quiet Cypriot village life in comfort at Villa Nicolas, with its heatable private pool set within a sunny enclosed walled garden with the scent of lemon trees and jasmine. You can enjoy the adjustable curtained poolside pergola for both shade and privacy, and it is a practical spot for anyone who has had enough sun, wants a quiet read, or for romantic evening drinks.
The scented garden transforms at night time, the plants and trees are illuminated by up lighters and you have hi fi speakers concealed in the garden walls, if you wish to hear your music in the garden. If you can drag yourselves away, local tavernas and bars are a short stroll.
Our interior photos show the beautiful restoration work to the thick stone walls which insulate the house in both summer and winter, and all the beams are original, as is the fireplace, ancient gate and lock, front door, and so much more... all done by owner George who lived in this house as a child. The lounge and each bedroom has a TV. Wi-Fi Internet access is provided for you to keep in touch with the outside world.
Villa Nicolas is quietly situated in the village centre in a no through lane, hidden behind high stone walls, and gated for more privacy.
A short 100m stroll brings you to the heart of the village where you will find a museum, 3 coffee shops, 2 also offering sandwiches, hamburgers and drinks. One offers souvlaki kebab, another food to order, including meze cooked just for you. The coffee shops have added some mini-market items to their range which is handy, so you can get some basics in the village.
Just 600m away on edge of village with wonderful views is attractive stone built Paradisos Hotel which is a lovely spot for a drink at sunset, (see the Review from Clive Benfield) and they serve good food too.
Closest beaches are Latchi and Polis. Polis offers a wide variety of shops and restaurants and Latchi is famous for its fish taverns beside the Marina, boat hire and trips.
Web rates are for 2 - 4 persons or 2 adults + children up to 16 years. We will add £7 daily per adult for 5 – 6 adults. Ignore web rate when booking.

Mandra Tavern - Paphos Cyprus
Established in 1979, MANDRA TAVERN is one of the oldest and best traditional taverns in Kato Paphos.
The name Mandra is the Greek word for a livestock enclosure.
A Mandra built with natural stone was used to protect livestock from weather conditions, to store dairy products and sometimes for the shepherds to sleep in.
This tavern used to be one such place. Its basic character has been retained. Only a few additions and alterations have been made and this only so that guests enjoy their traditionally prepared meals in a comfortable and pleasant environment.
Specialties are the Meze and Fish Meze, as well as the Sizzling Steaks and Spare Ribs.
The MANDRA TAVERN is committed to exceptional service and high standards of product quality and cleanliness and takes pride in providing its customers with a memorable dining experience.
One visit to the MANDRA TAVERN will give you good reason to visit again!

The villa was perfect for my dad - he found it very easy to get about in his wheelchair, so much so he especially wanted to take the accessible en-suite home!
Car hire is not essential at Villa Timily, which has been designed carefully to offer level access all around the property, making it suitable for all our clients, including elderly or frail, wheelchair users and toddlers.
This modern fully wheelchair accessible bungalow is situated in a quiet cul de sac amongst a cluster of exclusive villas, near the sandy beach and on the edge of Polis town itself. A leisurely evening stroll into the traditional town of Polis offers a wealth of Cypriot tavernas, restaurants, shops and bars.
The house is spacious and on one level, fully air conditioned and has been finished to a high standard using local stone, quality ceramic tiles, granite and wood. Air conditioning is included in the rates and there are 4 units, 3 bedrooms and lounge diner. As this is both cold and hot air, we rent Villa Timily in the cooler months. Having fly screens throughout is always a benefit as you can allow the fresh air in without insects.
The large private pool and rear garden, which overlooks fields and is fenced for privacy, enjoy all day sunshine. We have lemon and orange trees which provide more privacy and bear fruit whilst flowering, thus filling the air with scent from the flowers. There is a herb garden and built in BBQ for you to use too.
We have a new pool hoist on request. The shower chair and ramp are stored safely away, and will be supplied on request, all 3 items at no extra charge. The ramp is ideal if you have toddlers or people with limited mobility too!
The sandy beach with sea trac chair (disabled access) and cafe is approx. 10 - 15 mins walk and there is a regular bus service from Polis to Paphos and Coral Bay. Latchi harbour with its fish restaurants and sandy beach is 7 minutes’ drive, or we highly recommend the short cut on the promenade from Polis Camping beach, next to the sea, all the way to Latchi. Lovely for a sunset walk and you can walk your dinner off on the return. The Baths of Aphrodite and start of the Akamas National Park with its crystal clear blue lagoon and variety of walking trails is 2.3km.
