Amazed by Los Tres Ojos, thrilled by Santo Domingo the Dominican Republic
Santo Domingo the capital of the Dominican Republic pleasantly surprised us It's beautiful colonial architecture mixed with the modern structures added to the quaintness of the place. We were thrilled by the Three Eyes National Park or as it is locally known Los Tres Ojos.
The Dominican Republic was our first stop on this cruise and we awoke already docked in the capital city of Santo Domingo.
The first look we got of the city was amazing because the sun was now rising and its golden rays kissed the city and presented it majestically.

The Three Eyes Cave, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
Los Tres Ojos (Source: Wikipedia)
Los Tres Ojos (The Three Eyes in English) is the name given to a 50-Yard open-air limestone cave located in the Mirador del Este park, in the Santo Domingo Este municipality of the Dominican Republic. A series of three lakes, or ojos, the site is currently one of the most visited tourist attractions in the country. The caves are open from 9 am to 5 pm, and are illuminated at night by a myriad of colored lights.
The site was created centuries ago as a result of tectonic fractures when underground caves collapsed, forming a bowl-shaped depression which subsequently filled with water. Initially, the cave was inhabited by the indigenous Taíno Indians who were the first inhabitants of the Hispaniola island. The three lakes are called Aguas Azufradas (discovered in 1916), The Nevera and El Lago de las Mujeres. Some of the lakes also have openings on the outside. A staircase cut into the rock gives access to the first cave. A boat pulls visitors across the second lake.
The caves are fed by water from an underground river and surrounded by stalactites and stalagmites. The composition of the water varies. The two ponds are respectively made of sulphurous water and salt water, while the large lake is composed of freshwater. Their temperature varies between 20°C to 29°C, depending the upon the site, and their various depths give rise to different coloured reflections, blue, green, and sometimes yellow. The fauna is also very varied and includes fish, bats and turtles. Surrounding vegetation is lush and abundant. The depth of the lake remains unknown.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: COLUMBUS LIGHTHOUSE IS LARGEST IN THE AMERICAS
Spanish/Nat
The Dominican Republic is the home of the largest lighthouse in the Americas.
The Columbus Lighthouse was named after Christopher Columbus who arrived in Hispaniola in 1492.
But the government has been criticised for spending too much money on the building while more than half of the population lives in poverty.
It's the largest lighthouse in the Americas and a masterpiece in architecture.
The Columbus lighthouse stands majestically on the southern coast of the Dominican Republic.
It was named after Christopher Columbus who arrived in Hispaniola in 1492.
His remains were moved from the capital's cathedral to the lighthouse when construction was finished in October 1992.
A group of military officers stand guard in front of Columbus's tomb where a daily change of guard ceremony takes place.
The lighthouse was named The Monument to Corruption by opposers of President Joaquin Balaguer who was harshly criticised for spending (m) millions of dollars in the project while more than half of Dominicans live in poverty.
The monument was built in the shape of a large cross to symbolise the first cross brought by Columbus to the Americas.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
The architect who designed it took Columbus's idea and said that the lighthouse would be a large cross sculpted on the ground, and the large cross would have lights that would reflect a cross in the sky to symbolise the crosses Columbus left in the New World. This large cross is the permanent replica which represents all the crosses Columbus left in the New World.
SUPER CAPTION: Giovanni Spedfost, Official Guide of Columbus Lighthouse
The lighthouse has 150 lights which each night reflect a large cross into the sky.
President Balaguer has also been criticised by many who consider Columbus the originator of the genocide against the indigenous peoples of the Americas.

Santo Domingo Travel Guide - Dominican Republic wonderful Memories
Santo Domingo Travel Guide - Dominican Republic wonderful Memories
Santo Domingo is the capital of the Dominican Republic and the oldest European city in the Americas. The old city is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Santo Domingo is the capital city of the Dominican Republic, and it prides itself in being the first European city in the New World. Founded by Christopher Columbus's brother Bartolome Colombus in 1496, it is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the Americas and was the first seat of the Spanish colonial empire in the New World. For this reason, the city of Santo Domingo has a really rich historic and cultural heritage that makes any visit extremely worthwhile. Nowadays, it remains one of the most populous cities in the Central America-Caribbean area, and the main economic and commercial center of this region. The city is divided into two parts by the Ozama River. The western side is very developed economically, while the eastern part, known as Santo Domingo Este, has historically lagged behind.
The most important tourist destination of the city is the Zona Colonial or Colonial Zone, on the western bank of the river and facing the Caribbean Sea. To the west of the Zona Colonial lies Gazcue, one of the city's oldest neighborhoods, filled with old Victorian houses and tree-lined streets. The city's waterfront George Washington Avenue, knows as El Malecon, borders the Caribbean Sea and attracts many tourists because of its hotels, casinos, palm-lined boulevards and monuments. Surrounding the Gazcue area you will find the Palacio Nacional (seat of the Dominican government), the National Theater, the Museums in the Plaza de la Cultura, and the Palace of Fine Arts.
In the central part of western Santo Domingo lies the economic and commercial heart of the city, in an area known as the Poligono Central and delimited by the 27 de Febrero, John F. Kennedy, Winston Churchill and Maximo Gomez avenues. This high-income area remains rather unexplored by tourists, despite offering most of the best dining and shopping available in the city. Many of the city's most affluent neighborhoods surround the city's two main parks, the Parque Mirador Sur in the South and the Jardin Botanico in the North.
In the less developed Oriental Santo Domingo you will find other major monuments and tourist spots, such as Columbus's Lighthouse, where the explorer's remains are buried, the open caves of the Parque Nacional Los Tres Ojos, and the National Aquarium. This all makes of Santo Domingo a cosmopolitan, vibrant and bustling city with very distinct neighborhoods and ambiances, all worth a visit, and providing the most diverse cultural experiences.
Santo Domingo was, until recently, a huge city (pop. nearly 4 million people) that was split into 5 independent municipalities: Distrito Nacional, Santo Domingo Este, Santo Domingo Oeste, Santo Domingo Norte and Boca Chica. Fortunately, nearly all tourist attractions and shopping, dining and entertainment venues are located relatively close to each other in the Distrito Nacional, making it easy for you to get around and see the sights.
