SUBSCRIBE: - Let's visit the ancient Acropolis of Rhodes (Modern Greek: Ακρόπολη της Ρόδου) which is an acropolis dating from the Classical Greek period (5th–3rd century BC) 3 kilometers from the centre of Rhodes, in the island with the same name, Greece.
The partially reconstructed part of the site consists of the Temple of Apollo (also, as alternatives Athena Polias and Zeus Polieus) below which is a stadium and a small theatre. It is included in a large park, Monte Smith, named for English Napoleonic admiral William Sidney Smith.
Rhodes, the largest of Greece’s Dodecanese islands, is known for its beach resorts, ancient ruins and remnants of its occupation by the Knights of St. John during the Crusades. The city of Rhodes has an Old Town featuring the medieval Street of the Knights and the castlelike Palace of the Grand Masters. Captured by the Ottomans and then held by the Italians, the palace is now a history museum.
Greece is a country in southeastern Europe with thousands of islands throughout the Aegean and Ionian seas. Influential in ancient times, it's often called the cradle of Western civilization. Athens, its capital, retains landmarks including the 5th-century B.C. Acropolis citadel with the Parthenon temple. Greece is also known for its beaches, from the black sands of Santorini to the party resorts of Mykonos.

Acropolis of Rhodes
The acropolis of Rhodes was located at the western and highest part of the city.
It was not fortified, as was the case with old acropolises, but it constituted a monumental zone with sanctuaries, large temples, public buildings and underground sites of worship. It was abundant in fields and woods, according to the description of orator Aelius Aristides (2nd century AD).
The monuments of the acropolis date back to the Hellenistic and late Hellenistic period.
The buildings were built in a staggered manner at different levels on specially-formed terraces, with strong retaining walls. The spirit of Hellenistic architecture in the acropolis of Rhodes is perfectly expressed through the combination of natural beauty with artificial interventions.
The first excavations were carried out during the Italian occupation of the island (1912-1945).
From 1946 onwards, the Greek Archaeological Service has carried out excavations and has conducted maintenance works at the site of the Temple of Pythian Apollo, which sustained large damages from the 2nd World War bombardments, and because of the weight of the cannons that had been placed there. In 1996 renovation works began on the Temple itself and the Nymphaeums.
The acropolis has yet to be fully excavated. There is an archaeological zone of about 309 acres that has been excluded from modern construction, with a view to the continuation of excavations for the purpose of revealing the brilliant ancient city of Rhodes.

Rhodes is a Greek island steeped in history, there is much to see here beyond the beaches.
We start our tour of the island in Rhodes Old Town. Most of what you’ll see in Rhodes Town was constructed in the 14th century by the Knights of St. John, who occupied the island for 200 years.
From the Palace of the Grand Master, to Hippocrates Square, the many medieval gates, The Colossus of Rhodes, Rhodes Aquarium Museum and the Acropolis of Rhodes.
After a full day of sightseeing, we head to Mimakos Taverna for a night of traditional food and dancing. After dinner comes the entertainment, where you’ll get to experience some traditional Greek songs and dances performed by a local dance troupe.
Next up we head south to Kolymbia to visit the Santa Maria Monastery where you get epic views of the island and 7 Springs, a lush forest that attracts nature lovers with the peaceful sound of running water.
Next we head westward, across the island to the ancient site of Kamiros. Kamiros is worth a visit if you’re history buff like me.
Profitis Ilias is the second highest mountain in Rhodes. People come to enjoy the fresh mountain air and beautiful scenery.
Just south there is a famous wine town called Ebonas. We visited three amazing wineries!
Continuing our drive south along the western coast we’re headed to Monolithos Castle for some epic views over the island. You can climb up to the castle to get gorgeous views of the sea, back-dropped by the mountainous terrain and the village of Monolithos in the distance.
Down the western coast we cruise towards a beach like no other in Greece, Prasonisi beach.
Back on the east coast we head to Lindos to see the impressive Ancient Acropolis towering over the town. While it’s possible to head up to the Acropolis on foot, we opted for the donkey ride for the steep ascent.
So there you have my list of top 10 things to do in Rhodes Island. The island is big enough to keep you busy for at least a few days, if not more.

The acropolis is located a few kilometress from the city of Rhodes on top of a low hill overlooking the city. Its amphitheater and its studium are both very well preserved.

Every summer, butterflies known as Jersey Tiger Moths (Euplagia quadripunctaria rhodosensis) visit the numerous Oriental Sweetgum trees of this valley in Rhodes island in order to spend the last stage of their life cycle! This is a must see if you are on Rhodes Greece. Petaloudes or Valley of the Butterflies is a cool excursion.

In the past the Acropolis of Rhodes overlooked the western part of the city. It was not Unlike most other ancient acropolis, this one wasn't fortified. The Acropolis of Rhodes was replete with Sanctuaries, huge temple premises and public buildings. The buildings were strategically built on precipitous terraces that were ably supported by impregnable walls. The Acropolis of Rhodes is one of the finest specimens of Hellenic style of architecture that blended harmoniously with the surrounding environment.
The renowned Italian Archaeological School was entrusted with the work of excavating the Acropolis during the period from 1912 -- 1945. But, from the year 1946 the Greek Archaeological Service carried out excavations that provided fascinating insight to the history and topography of the Acropolis.

Ο Λόφος πήρε το όνομα με το οποίο είναι γνωστός σήμερα από τον Άγγλο ναύαρχο Σίντεϊ Σμιθ, που είχε στήσει εδώ το παρατηρητήριο του το 1802 προκειμένου να παρακολουθεί τις κινήσεις του στόλου του Ναπολέοντα στη θάλασσα κατά τη διάρκεια του πολέμου του με τους Τούρκους. Και η αλήθεια είναι ότι ο Άγγλος ναύαρχος είχε προχωρήσει σε μια εξαιρετικά επιτυχημένη στρατηγικά κίνηση, καθώς η θέα από τη κορυφή του λόφου είναι συγκλονιστική, τόσο προς την παλιά και νέα πόλη της Ρόδου, από την οποία απέχει 3 χλμ., όσο και προς τη θάλασσα, τα κοντινά νησιά και τα μικρασιατικά παράλια.
Στο αρχαιολογικό πάρκο, που «φιλοξενείται» μέσα σ' ένα φυσικό βαθούλωμα, διασώζεται το Στάδιο, που είναι γνωστό κι ως Στάδιο του Διαγόρα, ένα έργο της ελληνιστικής περιόδου του 3ου ή 2ου αι. π.Χ., όπου διεξάγονταν οι αθλητικοί αγώνες των Αλίων, της μεγάλης γιορτής των αρχαίων Ροδίων προς τιμήν του θεού Ήλιου. Το Στάδιο, που έχει ανοικοδομηθεί σε μεγάλο ποσοστό, έχει μήκος 200 μ. και πλάτος 35 μ.
Για όσους είναι εραστές των αρχαιολατρικών περιπάτων μια βόλτα στο Μόντε Σμιθ θα αποτελέσει σίγουρα μια καταληκτική εμπειρία, καθώς στην κορυφή του λόφου δεσπόζουν τα ερείπια της αρχαίας Ακρόπολης της Ρόδου ενώ στη νότια πλευρά του σώζονται τα λείψανα σημαντικών αρχαιοτήτων, μέσα σ' ένα πανέμορφο και κατάφυτο αρχαιολογικό πάρκο.

The Temple of Athena Lindia was a sanctuary in Lindos in Rhodes, dedicated to the goddess Athena. It was a significant Pan-hellenic shrine of Athena and arguably the regional center of her cult.

The sanctuary was situated at the acropolis in the city of Lindos in Rhodes, which was at that time the capital of the island. Prior to the foundation of the temple, the site appears to have been the place of the cult of a local goddess. It was built above a natural cave in the cliff, which may have been an previous cult place.
The first temple is dated to the 6th-century BC. It was likely built by Cleobulus. The cult statue of Athena Lindia has been reconstructed from the votive statuettes as having been a seated figure of Athena with a polos crown.
The temple was burned in 342 BC, and replaced by a new temple in the late 4th-century BC. It was built in the Doric style. It was 7.75 x 21.65 m. The new cult statue was a standing figure of Athena carrying a shield, but wearing a polos rather than a helmet; as it was fastened by the wall of the cella, it may have been over-life-size.
The fame of the temple is confirmed by the fact that Alexander the Great and many of his successors offered sacrifices there, and dedicated weapons after victories. Many of its votive gifts were famous and mentioned in the Temple Chronicle, such as works of Boethus and painter Parrhasios of Ephesus.
If the temple was still in use by the 4th-century, it would have been closed during the persecution of pagans in the late Roman Empire, when laws against non-Christian religions and their sanctuaries where enacted by the Christian emperors.

EXPLORING RHODES (GREECE), what to see, the magnificent MEDIEVAL WALLS ( ΡΟΔΟΣ) ????
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's go to one of the most magnificent Greek islands, the island of Rhodes (ΡΟΔΟΣ) and let's admire the medieval walls and fortifications that surround the old city.
From 1309 to 1523 Rhodes, the largest island of the Dodecanese, was occupied by the Knights of St John of Jerusalem who had lost their last stronghold in Palestine, in Acre, in 1291. They transformed the island capital into a fortified city able to withstand sieges as terrible as those led by the Sultan of Egypt in 1444 and Mehmet II in 1480. Rhodes finally fell in 1522 after a six-month siege carried out by Suleyman II.
The fortifications of the town of Rhodes are shaped like a defensive crescent around the medieval town and consist mostly in a modern fortification composed of a huge wall made of an embankment encased in stone, equipped with scarp, bastions, moat, counterscarp and glacis. The portion of fortifications facing the harbour is instead composed of a crenellated wall. On the moles towers and defensive forts are found.
The defence of different portions of fortifications was assigned to different Langue (tongues) of Knights. The North face was under the rule of the Grand Master, then moving West and South the posts were held by the Langue of France and Alvernia, the Langue of Spain (Spanish and Portuguese), the Langue of Germany (English and German), and the Langue of Italy. Bastions and terrepleins still hold the name of the langue involved (e.g. Bastion of Italy, terreplein of Spain).

Lindos –Acropolis
To get to the Acropolis one has to pass through the town of Lindos. As soon as one gets to Lindos outskirts there is a steep footpath which climbs the 116m high rock above Lindos to reach the beautifully preserved Acropolis.
This slope will take you approximately 10min by walk (Remember downhill is always easy, but uphill might prove to be challenging for elderly visitors). Another option would be by bus which makes life easier in moving up and down the slope
Be sure to pack a hat and some water, as there is no shade at the top, and take care in protecting young kids from dangerous drop-offs. Donkey rides to the Acropolis from the village entrance will only spare you around 3 minutes of exposed walking on the hillside.
The Hellinistic Staircase (2nd century BC) leading to the main arched entrance of the acropolis. The Acropolis is surrounded by this staircase leading to the site. On the staircase one can find a Roman encryption which says that the wall and square towers were repaired at the expense of Paelius Hangitor the priest of Athena in the 2nd century AD.
The Doric Temple of Athena Lindia dating from about 300BC is built on the site of an earlier temple. Inside this temple one can find remains from the table of offerings and the base of the cult of Athena.
