The Poison Garden of Alnwick
Inside the beautiful Alnwick Garden, behind a locked gate, there's the Poison Garden: it contains only poisonous plants. Trevor Jones, head gardener, was kind enough to give a guided tour!

Alnwick Garden (inclusive of the Poison Garden), Alnwick, UK GoPro 1080p
Review of the Alnwick Garden excursion. The Alnwick Garden is a complex of formal gardens adjacent to Alnwick Castle. The gardens have a long history under the Dukes of Northumberland but fell into disrepair until revived at the turn of the 21st century. The garden now features various themed plantings designed around a central water cascade. The first garden was laid down in 1750 by the 1st Duke of Northumberland. The 3rd Duke was a plant collector, and led a century of development at Alnwick - he brought seeds from over the world, and pineapples were raised in hothouses. In the middle of the 19th century, the 4th Duke created an Italianate garden featuring a large conservatory, and at the end of the century the gardens were at their grandest with yew topiary, avenues of limes and acres of flowers. The Poison Garden forms part of the Alnwick Garden. A garden featuring intoxicating and poisonous plants was added in February 2005. Species of the Poison Garden include Strychnos nux-vomica (source of strychnine), Hemlock, Ricinus communis (source of harmless castor oil but also deadly ricin), Foxglove, Atropa belladonna (commonly called Deadly Nightshade), Brugmansia and Laburnum. The mission of the Poison Garden also includes drug education, with featured plantings of cannabis, coca and the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum); Alnwick, UK 2019. The Poison garden hosts many different poisonous plants some of which can quite easily kill you and others which are illegal to grow. Just remember not to sniff anything or touch anything while your guided round there, or you could end up as another statistic!
Did you know the leaves of rhubarb plants contain Oxalic Acid, the same chemical used in paint stripper... thats why we DONT eat the leaves, they are poisonous! Many plants in the Poison garden can be found in the Countryside so take care what your touching or even eating!
More information here:-
The gardens even hosted a Naturist event after hours one day last month, hope they had a warm evening for it haha :)
Enjoy the tour. :)

A day at Alnwick Castle, Northumberland, England.
Dubbed the ‘Windsor of the North,’ Alnwick Castle is the second largest inhabited castle in the country and has been home to the Duke of Northumberland’s family, the Percys, for over 700 years.
Combining magnificent medieval architecture with sumptuous Italianate State Rooms, Alnwick Castle is one of the UK’s most significant heritage destinations and best days out in Northumberland.
The Castle’s rich history is brimming with drama, intrigue and extraordinary people; from a gunpowder plotter and visionary collectors, to decadent hosts and medieval England’s most celebrated knight: Harry Hotspur.
In recent years it has also taken starring roles in a number of film and television productions, featuring as the magnificent Brancaster Castle in Downton Abbey and previously appearing as Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the Harry Potter films. It has previously been a location used in Becket, Blackadder; Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and Ivanhoe, and many others listed in the Location section of the Alnwick Castle website.
The lavish Italian Renaissance style interiors of the State Rooms are contained like a jewel within Alnwick Castle’s magnificent fortified exterior. Originally remodelled as a family home by the 1st Duke and Duchess of Northumberland, and beautifully restored in the 19th Century, these luxurious interiors are a vision to behold.
The State Rooms are filled with one of the country’s finest private art and furniture collections, including work by Canaletto, Titian, Van Dyck, Turner, and Dobson; an extensive gallery of Meissen, Chelsea, and Paris porcelain; and the priceless Cucci cabinets, originally created for Louis XIV of France at the Palace of Versailles. From the windows of each room, the castle's grounds can be admired, and beyond them, the landscape created by Lancelot 'Capability' Brown.
For some history behind the Castle and area please see :-
You can also take a picture tour at the following address although a number of the pictures show Alnwick Garden not the Castle. This is a separate attraction adjacent to the Castle.
