Retire In Puerto Plata Dominican Republic - North Coast Dominican Republic
Starting our survey of the towns on the North Coast of the Dominican Republic, the team checks out the town of Puerto Plata. At the moment Puerto Plata is going through a bit of a revival, with the addition of the nearby Amber Cove Cruise Docks. After only a couple years, Amber Cove already brings in over 250,000 cruise visitors to the Puerto Plata area.
If you prefer a more commercial town, or if you are planning to build a local tourist related business, then Puerto Plata might be the town to consider for your retirement in the Caribbean or for a family move. Each of those 250,000 cruisers come prepared to enjoy the local attractions, purchase trinkets and treasures, take tours, eat in restaurants and have a few drinks in the local bars.

Vision of an Ancient Forest
An Ant scurries along a tree trunk, oblivious to the danger ahead. Suddendly, one leg becomes stuck, then another, until the ant is trapped in the tree's honeylike resin. One more golden droplet trickles downs, and is engulfed. Escape becoms impossible. Finally, the sticky mass containing the ant falls to the ground.
Rain washes the imprisoned ant into a river, where it is burried in silt.
40 millions years later the ant is discovered, perfectly preserved in a golden teardrop. The resin has hardened into amber one of man's most precious treasures.
For scientists, inclusions are fascinating. Because insects were often trapped quickly, many pieces of amber contain snapshots of ancient history.
Because of its unique characteristics, amber and its prisoners have outlasted the lush tropical ecosystem from which they came. The organic material in other fossils has become petrified its original structure being replaced by minerals.
On the other hand, amber is itself organic, as are any animals or plants it may contain. If it is transparent, its ancient treasures can be studied and photographed in three dimensions without damaging them. Thus, amber has been called a golden window to the past because it contains a record not only of the insects and small vertrebates but also of the plants and climate of long-vanished ecosystems.
Amber is not only part of Dominican ancient history but also part of mankind's heretage.

Playa Dorada is a big gated complex of all-inclusive hotels, beaches, nightclubs, golf courses and other tourist amenities located on the north coast (aka. the Amber Coast or Silver Coast) of the Dominican Republic (DR).
The Dominican Republic is located on the eastern side of the island of Hispaniola, next to Haiti, west of Puerto Rico, east of Cuba and Jamaica, and south of Florida and the Bahamas. The North Coast of the island, around the city of Puerto Plata, was the centre of the country's first major tourist industry development in the 1980s. Playa Dorada is located between the city of Puerto Plata and the region's main airport, Gregorio Luperon or Puerto Plata International Airport. Other tourist centres in the area are Sosua and Cabarete, which are east of the airport. The main highway running along the north coast is highway 5, which connects the airport and these towns and resorts. Today the north coast tourist industry has more competition from other parts of the Dominican Republic, especially from Punta Cana and Bavaro in the easternmost part of the Dominican Republic.

Dominican Amber is found in the mountains north of Santiago at elevations of 700 - 1,500 meters. The Amber Mines in DR are located in a La Cumbre near the Coast in the Cordillera Septentrional, the mountain range between Santiago and Puerto Plata.
