Thassos Guide - Limenas, Ancient Agora
Ancient Agora (Limenas)
On the northeast side of the present- day town of Thassos, near the harbor and next to the Museum, stand the ruins of the ancient agora; they were brought to light in excavations carried out between 1948 and 1955. The agora consists of a vast level area, rectangular in shape, and lined on three sides with stalls which housed shops and storerooms. On the northeast side stood the administrative buildings and a row of cult buildings. Building on Thassos' agorabegan in the fourth century BC and was completed in stages up to the second century BC. It was the heart of the city, its cultural and commercial center, and the place where locals and foreigners met and transacted business. There are also remains of the Sanctuaries of Theagenes and Zeus of the Market- place. Another building in this area was the Sanctuary of Artemisor Artemision. In Roman times a monumental entrance- way was added. To the north is the Sanctuary of Dionysusdating back to the fourth century BC. To the north- west of the sanctuary stands the Theatre.A narrow street leads us to the fourth- century BC Sanctuary of Poseidon;with a circular wall surrounding a U-shaped alter. The present-day entrance to the ancient agora is in the Museum Square.

Thassos Guide - Limenas, Ancient Theatre & Acropolis
Let's take a walk above Limenas:
Ancient Amphitheatre:
From the old port, a stone- paved road leads to the ancient amphitheatre of Thassos, on the north side of town. The judgement of the ancient artisans and the refined artistic sense of the islanders ensured the fifth- century BC theatre would be built in a natural concavity on the hillside, The position of the amphitheatre offers a fantastic panoramic view of the sea, proof of the noble spirit of the Thassians regarding the arts and culture. The theatre seated 2,000- 3,000 spectators. Lysistratus, the Thassian who led the construction in the third century BC, dedicated the proscenium, or stage, to Dionysos, god of wine, vegetation, and theatre among other things. Beginning in the first century AD, the Romans remodeled the theatre and used it for gladiatorial contests. Only the proscenium remained in place; its carved metopes depict favorite deities. Nowadays, ancient tragedies are produced here every summer, reviving the ancient practice. Various musical groups and performers also give concerts.
Acropolis:
From the ancient amphitheatre there is an unpaved road that runs alongside the ruined walls, up to the acropolis, the first of a series of three hills whose summits form a sort of plateau, 137 meters above sea level. It was protected by thick marble walls and it stood on top of the first hill. It was the site of the sanctuary of Pythian Apollo, which also served as the treasury where the city's riches were stored. Similar as the Hieromnemon, a functionary was responsible for managing and safeguarding the public wealth.
Sanctuary Of Athena:
On the summit of the second hill stood a sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Athena. All that remains today of the ancient sanctuary is a row of foundations.
Sanctuary Of Pan:
Hollowed out of the side of the third and highest hill, near the summit, is an artificial cave: the sanctuary of Pan. A relief on the wall depicts the ancient god with goat hooves and his pipes.

Thasos, Best of beaches & Sites: Greece | An Exotic island - Guide
THASOS: THE EMERALD ISLAND IN THE NORTHERN AEGEAN
A verdant splash upon an expanse of azure: intensely traditional, Thasos will enthrall you. Thasos, island of the Sirens, offers you as many options as there are colours in the blues of the sea and sky, the greens of the trees and the golden hues of the sandy beaches. This island in the North Aegean is one of the best options for your summer holiday in Greece, thanks to its beautiful beaches and traditional allure. You will enjoy your stay in the excellent hotels, sample local delicacies in the villages, hike the trails and seek out the island’s secrets. If you are a nature lover, into water sports or just want to taste the good life, Thasos is your ideal emerald escape.
What to do on Thasos
An island for nature lovers
On Thasos, you will find yourself engulfed in a sea of green, which comes in many shades and moods. Take the tree-lined roads from the beaches to the ravines, lakes, cascades and footpaths around the villages. Rewarding trails like Maries-Prinos, Panagia-Potamia-Ypsario, Kallirahi-Prinos or Hrisi Ammoudia-Limenas can be enjoyed on foot or by mountain bike. For lovers of outdoor sports, Thasos is the ideal summer destination for an adventure-filled holiday.
Arrival at Limenas
This is Thasos’ link to the mainland and its capital since antiquity. Be sure to see the ancient agora; the sanctuaries of Herakles, Dionysos, Artemis and Poseidon; the Acropolis with its incredible view and the 5th century BC theatre – all testament to the island’s long history. To get back to today’s world, walk through the central market and its dozens of shops as well as the small harbour on the beach. At night you’ll have fun choosing your favourite from among dozens of restaurants and bars.
Palataki at Limenaria
Palataki (little palace) is a two-storey rectangular building with a pair of towers, a typical example of eclecticism. Built in the early 1900s to provide office space for Speidel, the German company that was in charge of the island’s mines, it’s considered the most impressive of the administrative buildings in the Aegean and it’s surrounded by one of the most important industrial monuments in the Mediterranean, namely the mine itself. Thasos has been a centre of mining operations since antiquity with rich deposits of mercury, lead, iron, manganese and white marble.
Paradise on Earth
It’s all in the name! The exotic beach that goes by the moniker Paradise is considered one of the finest in the Aegean.
The beaches of Thasos
You will probably run out of stamina before Thasos runs out of beaches: Chrysi Akti, Chrysi Ammoudia, Agios Antonios, Alykes, Trypiti, Skala Potamia, Paralia Limena, Pefkari, Skala Rahoiou, Gkiola, Saliara or Marble beach, as the enamoured foreign tourists call it, all combine the azure of the sea, pale or golden sand and enchantingly verdant backdrops. Topping it off are the tavernas, beach bars and water sports available at some of the most popular beaches.
Activities
Thasos has it all; scuba diving and instructors at Pefkari, water skiing at Chrysi Ammoudia, Pefkari and Psili Ammos, windsurfing at Paradise and boat rides to the most isolated beaches from all over. Fun and games in the sea and wind on the island of your dreams.
High-end hospitality
No matter your budget, Thasos will more than satisfy you. Whether you opt for one of the five-star hotels and villas, or just a room or furnished apartment, everything is here for you, from swimming pools and poolside bars with a view of the sea in a well-tended garden, to water massages and high class restaurants..
Thassos is the northernmost Greek island, and 12th largest by area. Thassos island is known from ancient times for its termae making it a climatic and balneoclimateric resort area. Thasos' economy relies on timber (it is rich in forests), marble quarries, olive oil and honey. Tourism has also become important since the 1960s, although not to the level of other Greek islands. Thasos, the capital, is now informally known as Limenas, or the port. It is served by a ferry route to and from Keramoti a port close to Kavala International Airport, and has the shortest possible crossing to the island. Scala Prinos 20 km south of Thassos town is served by a ferry route to and from Kavala.
