Ancient home found in Nazareth - 29 Dec 09
Archaeologists in the old city of Nazareth in Israel have discovered what they claim may have been a home dating back to the era of Jesus Christ. Christ is believed to have spent his early childhood there. Al Jazeera's Nisreen El-Shamyleh reports from Nazareth on the first structure from the early Roman period to be unearthed in that part of the world.

My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this calling in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, glide over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and see the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

Israel - Two thousand year old bathroom
T/I: 10:47:22
Summer is a time for discovery in Israel. It's digging season for archaeologists and every year uncovers surprising relics of the ancient world. This year Professor Ehud Netzer and his team from Hebrew
University in Jerusalem have uncovered a two thousand year old bathroom, sauna and small swimming pool close to Herod's palace south of Jerusalem. The site has yielded well preserved mosaics and plaster work which is colourless unless sprinkled with water.

STORYLINE
Days before Christmas, Israeli archaeologists on Monday unveiled what they said were the remains of the first dwelling in Nazareth that can be dated back to the time of Jesus.
The find could shed new light on what the hamlet was like during the period the New Testament says Jesus lived there as a boy.
The dwelling and older discoveries of nearby tombs in burial caves suggest that Nazareth was an out-of-the-way hamlet of around 50 houses on a patch of about four acres (1.6 hectares).
It was evidently populated by Jews of modest means who kept camouflaged grottos to hide from Roman invaders, said archaeologist Yardena Alexandre, excavations director at the Israeli Antiquities Authority.
Based on clay and chalk shards found at the site, the dwelling appeared to be the sort of house that Jesus or people of his period would have lived in, Alexandre said, as workers at the site carefully chipped away at mud with small pickaxes to reveal stone walls.
Nazareth holds a cherished place in Christianity.
It is the town where Christian tradition says Jesus grew up and where an angel told Mary she would bear the child of God.
The discovery so close to Christmas has pleased local Christian authorities who say it adds proof to the veracity of their Biblical traditions.
It's a gift to Nazareth, said a smiling Father Jack Karam of the nearby Basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth.
Alexandre's team found remains of a wall, a hideout, a courtyard and a water system that appeared to collect water from the roof and supply it to
the home.
The discovery was made when builders dug up the courtyard of a former convent to make room for a new Christian centre, just yards (metres) away from the Basilica.
It is not clear how big the dwelling is - Alexandre's team have uncovered about 900 square feet (85 square metres) of the house, but it may have been for an extended family and could be much larger, she said.
The grotto would have hid around six people for a few hours, she said.
The Roman army was more interested in larger towns and strategic hilltop communities, she said.
Alexandre said.

STORYLINE
Among the roots of ancient olive trees, Israeli archaeologists have found pieces of large stone jars of the type the Gospel says Jesus used when he turned water into wine at a Jewish wedding in the Galilee village of Cana.
The shards were found during a salvage dig in modern-day Cana, between Nazareth and Capernaum, by a team led by Israeli archaeologist Yardena Alexander.
Alexander believes the present-day Arab town was built near an ancient village of the same name.
The jar pieces the archaeologists found date to the Roman period, when Jesus travelled in the Galilee.
Based on the shards, Alexander believes the vessels found at her site were 12 to 16 inches (30 to 40 centimetres) in diameter - or large enough to be the same type of jars described in the Gospel of John.
Alexander has been digging in modern Cana since 1999.
The current find came in a last-ditch salvage dig before a house is built on the site.
A Christian Arab family financed part of the excavation, in accordance with Israeli law, before construction can begin.
Apart from the pottery shards, other evidence that might link the site to the biblical account includes the presence of a Jewish ritual bath on the site, which Alexander says shows a Jewish community lived there.
And locally-produced pottery remains were found, showing the site could have been the poor village described in the Scriptures.
Alexander all evidence suggests the shards could have been the same kind of vessels the Bible says Jesus used in his first miracle while the site where they were found could be the location of biblical Cana.
But Bible scholars caution it will be hard to obtain conclusive proof - especially since experts disagree on exactly where Cana was located.
American archaeologists excavating a rival site several miles (kilometres) to the north have also found pieces of stone jars from the time of Jesus and claim they have found biblical Cana.
One Bible scholar in Jerusalem said that while the American dig has generally been accepted by scholars as the true site, the shards found in modern-day Cana raise new questions.
The scholar said that evidence shows both sites are from the first century, so more information is needed to identify either site as the one mentioned in the Bible.
Christian theologians attach great significance to the water-to-wine miracle at Cana.
The act was Jesus' first miracle.

Millennia-old cave tunnels in Israel declared UNESCO World Heritage Site
Subscribe to ITN News:
Ancient cave tunnels in Israel, used by Jewish rebels in revolt against Romans, have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Described by UNESCO as a city under a city, the caves were used for over 2,000 years, from the Iron Age to the Crusades, and exhibit a great variety of subterranean construction methods, the listing said. Originally used as quarries, the excavations were later converted for agriculture and local industries, including oil presses, dovecotes, stables, underground cisterns and channels, baths, tomb complexes and places of worship, the listing added. Geologists have found ancient weapons, trap doors and olive presses during their surveys. Report by Andrea Lilly.

Beth-Shean (Beit Shean, Bet She'an) & Mt. Gilboa: King Saul's Downfall, Roman Decapolis City, Israel
Beth-Shean and Mt. Gilboa are biblical sites where many amazing things took place in the Bible.
Location
1. Beth-Shean, also known as Beit Shean or Bet She’an, was a major biblical and secular city for thousands of years.
2. It’s located in the center of several main crossroads between the Jordan Valley and the Jezreel (Yizreel) Valley.
3. It’s about 15 miles (25 km.) south of the southern tip of the Sea of Galilee and about 35 miles (55 km.) east of the Mediterranean Sea.
4. It’s located on the Harod Stream which provides it with much water. This Harod Stream is the same stream that originates at Harod Spring, just west of here about 15 miles and is where Gideon chose 300 men under God’s command to defeat the Midianites and other armies.
5. The main entrance faced the east, as did most other major cities and structures in ancient times. In fact, the word orientation comes from the word “orient,” which means east. Because creation, the beginning civilizations, and the sun rose from the east, to be oriented was to position yourself focused on the east. Today, maps use the north for orientation, but in ancient days, maps used the east for orientation purposes.
Historical Background
1. Beth-Shean was a key city long before the arrival of the Israelites because of its location. In the late Canaanite period (1600–1400 BC) the Egyptians ruled the area and the entire land of Israel.
2. Later, around 1000 BC, the Philistines also ruled the city for a time because they hung the body of King Saul on its walls after defeating the armies of Israel in the Battle of Gilboa.
3. When King David reigned (1008–970 BC), he conquered Beth-Shean, and it became part of Israel’s territories.
4. Later, in 732 BC, the Assyrian king, Tiglath-Pileser III, destroyed Beth-Shean after defeating the northern Kingdom of Israel.
5. In the 4th century BC, Hellenistic (Greek) new settlers established a city-state (polis) in Beth-Shean. During the Hellenistic period, the city was named Nisa Scythopolis.
6. In 63 BC, the city was conquered by the Romans and became one of the cities of the Decapolis – a group of cities with a Hellenistic-Roman cultural character, most of them in Transjordan. Beth-Shean was one of the key cities of the Roman Empire in this area south of Galilee.
7. Beth-Shean was not far from Nazareth, and it’s very likely Jesus worked here with His father as a builder.
8. Undoubtedly Christ ministered here and walked by it on a regular basis.
9. Beth-Shean was destroyed in 749 AD due to an enormous earthquake.
10. The biblical tel of Beth-Shean has around 20 layers of civilizations that have been discovered.

My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered liscenced tourist guide.
