Sougia (ancient Syia) Sunrise
Like Lissos, Syia was a capacious and safe harbour of Elyros. Strabo calls the town Syba. The name derives probably from the word “sys (σῦς), i.e. hog. Therefore, Syia is the “hog-city”. There might have been forests of oaks and hollies, which is the basic food of pigs.
Syia flourished in the Roman and the 1st Byzantine period. There are Roman ruins and three large Palaiochristian Basilicas. Syia had set up monetary union with Yrtakina, Elyros, Lissos, and Tarra. The city also participated in the Koinon of the Oreians. It seems that the Saracens destroyed the city.
Robert Pashley detected ruins of the Roman water supply and thermae in the north by west of Elyros. In Syia, there are also relics of ancient buildings, walls, hollowed tombs, and the foundations of Roman houses. Pashley also observed inscribed crosses on marbles.

This is the first of three videos showing the walk from Paleohora to Sougia, a walk which took in the ancient site of Lissos.

Φαράγγι Λισσού και Αρχαία Πόλη / Lissos Gorge and Ancient City, Crete in 4K
Through the gorge of Lissos passes the trail that connects Sougia to ancient Lissos. It's a long canyon with imposing towering walls, but the path that leads to Lissos covers only a small part of the route, taking only about 1 hour.
Ancient Lissos was the seaport of Elyros and was built in a small valley between Sougia and Paleochora. It flourished from the Hellenistic period up to the 9th century, when it was destroyed by the Saracens. It was famous for the Asclepion, where patients from all over the island arrived to be healed from the thermal baths.
You can still see the mosaic floors of the temple of Asclepius with depictions of animals, which was destroyed by an earthquake. A walk in the valley of Lissos will impress you, as the area is dispersed with ancient ruins, such as pillars, building bases and pieces of marble. You will see the Roman cemetery with vaulted tombs and ruins of the Roman theater. The area hosted dozens of statues and coins of Lissos, indicating that it Lissos was one of the most powerful towns in Crete. The most important statues were these of Goddess of Health (Hygeia), Asclepius and Pluto, that can be seen at the Archaeological Museum of Chania.
Near the sea there is the church of St. Kirikos that was built on the site of an early Christian church (4th-5th century AD).

Temple of Asclepius, Lissos, Crete
Temple of Asclepius, Lissos, Crete.
Asclepius (/æsˈkliːpiəs/; Greek: Ἀσκληπιός, Asklēpiós [asklɛːpiós]; Latin: Aesculapius) was a hero of medicine in ancient Greek religion and mythology. Asclepius became so proficient as a healer that he surpassed both Chiron and his father, Apollo (the most probably Apollo Lybian , descendant of Amon Ra (Marduk).... Asclepius was therefore able to evade death and to bring others back to life from the brink of death and beyond. This caused an influx of human beings and Zeus resorted to killing him. Zeus (Zeus of Thebes (Marduk) killed Asclepius with a thunderbolt.

SOUGIA in Crete ,Greece
Sougia is a community and a small village in Chania regional unit on the island of Crete, Greece. It is part of the municipal unit of East Selino (Anatoliko Selino). It is located on the south coast of the island, 70 km south of Chania. The community consists of the following villages (population in 2011)
Sougia, pop. 136
Koustogerako, pop. 44
Livadas, pop. 17
Moni, pop. 23
Sougia is reached from Chania by car in 2 hours or by ferry boats from Palaiochora, Agia Roumeli, Loutro and Hora Sfakion. Although it is not one of the larger towns of the province of Selino, Sougia is interesting to the tourist, providing a beach, walkways, mountains and interesting remains of an ancient city and old Byzantine churches. Sougia has some tourist services, such as small hotels, rooms to rent and a few taverns, cafes and bars. Sougia was the ancient city of Syia, a harbour of Elyros. In the village church, an important basilica of the Byzantine era, was found a beautiful mosaic, now exposed in Chania's Archeological Museum. In 1943, during German occupation, Germans razed the villages Livadas, Moni and Koustogerako, by way of reprisal for local partisan actions. Legends also suggest that the Cyclops in Odysseus' adventure lived in Sougia.
