Mr. Curran Shares the History of Curran’s Pub
For a good traveler, the best “sights” in a town like Dingle are its people. Tonight, our Best of Ireland in 14 Days tour group will gather in Curran’s Pub for a traditional music session. I popped in during the day to talk with Mr. Curran, learn the history of his place, and enjoy it when it’s sleepy. It’s fun that so many of the shops and pubs here are called the names of the people who run them today (often after many, many generations). Real people…you must connect with the people to experience Ireland. And in Ireland, that’s easy.
(This is Day 72 of my “100 Days in Europe” series. As I travel with Rick Steves’ Europe Tours, research my guidebooks, and make new TV shows, I’m reporting on my experiences across Europe. Still to come: England, Scotland, Germany, Switzerland, and more. Follow along at

Police broke up two brief but violent disturbances involving English soccer fans Saturday, arresting more than 300 people the day before England plays Ecuador in a World Cup second-round match.
Following Germany's 2-0 afternoon win over Sweden, English and German fans clashed in a plaza near outdoor viewing screens in the southern German city.
German fans were singing in celebration when England fans began throwing plastic chairs and bottles at them, according to a police spokeswoman.
Five Germans were injured before officers in riot gear separated the two sides. Police lines two or three deep corralled the English fans and waded into the crowd, arresting them one by one.
About 50,000 England fans were expected in Stuttgart for Sunday's England-Ecuador match.
They were greeted with a heavy security presence - about 1,800 officers on patrol along with British police.
Early on Saturday in the same downtown area, police arrested 122 English fans who had been throwing bottles and glasses at passers-by from a pub terrace.

German Pub Food! The Strammer Max (Tight Max) Legendary gourmet food or again just nasty crap?
The Stramme Max! A highlight of the classic german family dinner. But also a quick snack in many pubs! A bit of everything. In the classic version German bread, ham and fried egg. Often refined with tomatoes and cucumbers. I loved him as a kid! Why is the good Max stiff? No idea? Maybe we will find an answer together!
In this series, however, we are not dedicated to the specialties for goumets, but the simple, home-style cuisine. The food from the supermarket, the cans, the fast food in between. In short: the everyday kitchen that most people still know from their childhood!
And of course we have time to talk ... about Europe, the world and the culture that connects us!

BE ADVISED - FOX ON THE RUNWAY!
Wildlife at airports is a huge issue, particularly with the threat of bird strikes. Some airfields maintain grass at a certain length/height to deter birds of prey ‘seeing’ small rodents and constantly cruising the grass areas. Scare tactics include setting-off air rocket ‘bombs’ or audio of birds in distress, played-out from Opps vehicles.
Dublin (Ireland) have issues with Hares, the aircraft usually ‘giving way’ to the wildlife as they cross the active runway. This is something they (the ground teams) seem to live with.
Airfields also have issues with small ‘flocking’ birds like the starlings at Heathrow. Heathrow also have regular visits from Birds of Prey including Kites and smaller Common Buzzard. We always see these birds during our show and it’s great to see them ‘hover’ above the grass areas.
To be honest, the birds seem to be ‘savvy’ to the aircraft: staying in the safe (grass) areas to the north of the Northern runway and flying in flocks back over the fence towards....MCDONALDS ????
We’ve even seen Swans and Geese flying across and even down the runways, these birds are big enough to be picked-up by ATC radar to notify approaching air traffic.
But this is the first time we’ve clocked the fox LHR. Apparently there’s a family living in the infield LGW, which the ops teams leave alone as they control the mice, which in turn deters the birds of prey. So it’s a constant operation, with teams dedicated to the control of wildlife. But in general, it seems the teams prefer to work ‘with’ the wildlife rather than against it - after all, they were there first.

Shocking CCTV footage shows violent road rage mass brawl
Shocking video footage reveals a road rage accident spiralling out of control in to a mass brawl on a quiet suburban street. The video shows a white Volkswagen Golf smashing into the rear-end of a black hatchback on a small road in Keighley, Yorks. Neighbours can be seen flocking to the street to see what all the fuss is about - before they too get involved in the escalating road rage brawl. What neo-Nazis have inherited from original Nazism | DW Documentary (neo-Nazi documentary)
What resemblance do today’s ethnonationalistic ideologies bear to those which surged during the rise of the Nazis in the Weimar-era? Quite a lot, this documentary shows. Germany’s far-right neo-nazi scene is now bigger than at any time since National Socialism.
History may not repeat itself, but one can still learn from it. The years of the Weimar Republic were scarred by post-war trauma, political extremism, street fighting, hyper-inflation and widespread poverty. But they also saw economic boom, the establishment of a liberal democratic order and a parliamentary party system. Nobody could really imagine that the Nazis would brush aside the achievements of this young democracy just a few years later. But there were signs, warnings even that all was not well.
So how does that resonate today? How do today’s right-wing populist movements and parties achieve their political aims? Which slogans, images and stereotypes played a role then, and which ones are playing a role now?
The film also looks beyond Germany’s borders. How has Europe changed in the last few years and how have far-right movements been able to gain such influence? In the interwar period, democracies across the continent collapsed one after the other like a house of cards. What about today? Riding on the coat-tails of the political party the Alternative for Germany (AfD) the far-right has become a factor in both national and state parliaments, united by nationalist and often racist ideologies directly linked to those of the 1930s. At that time, global economic crisis and mass unemployment drove people straight into the fascists’ arms. So what will happen if crisis strikes now? Are our democracies and their achievements today any more stable than they were in the years before the Second World War?
