Mark Hagen’s visit to The ARA Project
In Costa Rica, The Ara Project has worked for many years to save the Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao) and the Great Green Macaw (Ara ambiguus), at their breeding centre at Punta Islita, Guanacaste Costa Rica. The Project’s sole purpose is to breed macaws for eventual release into the wild. The World Parrot Trust is collaborating with Ara Project to help the parrots return to the wilds of Costa Rica.
In February 2015 , on a follow up visit to his 2013 trip (see Mark Hagen Photo Journal Great Green Macaw), Mark Hagen, director of the Hagen Avicultural Research Institute visited the new location for The ARA Project in Punta Islita Costa Rica. This is a photo account of his visit.

Wild Macaws up close at The Ara Project conservation site!
Released Great green Macaws in Manzanillo are enjoying their afternoon snack. They love almonds! All the birds that The Ara Project released in Manzanillo (Puerto Viejo) are bred in captivity for the purpose to strengthen the wild population in Costa Rica.

In the breeding season, the Great- green Macaws will pair up with their partner and spend a lot of time preening each other which strengthens their bond. These two are absolutely adorable! Both have been bred in captivity and released by The Ara Project, a conservation organisation protecting Macaw species in Costa Rica.

But how do you get to Manzanillo? Well you could find someone with a boat or a seaplane to give you a ride (highly unlikely), you could hike through the jungle from Panama (ridiculously dangerous), or take the road from Puerto Viejo. We would suggest taking the road from Puerto Viejo because, well... it just makes sense for the average traveler and we will tell you the different ways of how to get to Manzanillo from Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica.

WCN Fall Expo 2017 - The Ara Project- Dr.Sam Williams
Macaw numbers worldwide have been plummeting for many years and Costa Rica is no different. Formerly present over 85% of the country, there are now two main isolated populations of scarlet macaws remaining in Costa Rica. While great green macaws have recovered slightly thanks to intensive conservation efforts, their total population is still low. For over thirty years, The Ara Project has been a leader in the rescue and the release of macaws in Costa Rica.
