Mark Hagen’s visit to The ARA Project
In Costa Rica, The Ara Project has worked for many years to save the Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao) and the Great Green Macaw (Ara ambiguus), at their breeding centre at Punta Islita, Guanacaste Costa Rica. The Project’s sole purpose is to breed macaws for eventual release into the wild. The World Parrot Trust is collaborating with Ara Project to help the parrots return to the wilds of Costa Rica.
In February 2015 , on a follow up visit to his 2013 trip (see Mark Hagen Photo Journal Great Green Macaw), Mark Hagen, director of the Hagen Avicultural Research Institute visited the new location for The ARA Project in Punta Islita Costa Rica. This is a photo account of his visit.

Meet Carmela, Costa Rica's Mooching Macaw
It was no use parroting the hotel policy against feeding the tropical wildlife -- Carmela the lovely scarlet macaw was going to charm us into feeding her fruits and nuts from our plates, even though the trees were full of bird food.

Hotel Punta Islita
My favorite Luxury Resort I visited in Costa Rica. This beach and mountain resort is very eco friendly! check out how they employ mostly locals and also support the entire local community. Beautiful luxury resort but one who cares about the environment and really shows it. Locals weren't made to leave like some Hotels do to people, they were instead, employed to help build and also continue to work there as waiters, cleaners, bar men, maintainance people and artists. A true example of what good can come out of the hospitality industry. Oh and did I mention its paradise too?
Goodbye Costa Rica and Punta Islita
Dani and I leave Costa Rica and Hotel Punta Islita as we make our way back to Montana. However, we stop in Denver where I meet up with my parents to help them for a few days and Dani head back to Montana to get ready for her art show.
Costa Rica was an amazing experience. The Guanacaste province is a beautiful place from Nosara/Guiones to Punta Islita, we loved every bit of it. If you ever have a chance to visit Costa Rica, fly into Liberia and drive to Punta Islita. You won't be disappointed.
Pura Vida!
