팔미라는 사막 한 가운데 있는 도시다. 고대 팔미라 역시 사막의 오아시스 도시로 오리엔트 세계와 지중해 세계를 잇는 무역 중계지로 번영을 누렸던 곳이다. 세 개의 아치형 문으로 이루어진 개선문은 팔미라의 입구 역할을 한다. 개선문을 지나면 도로를 따라 거대한 줄기둥인 대열주가 나타난다. 높이 9.5m에 이르는 원기둥들이 이루는 1,100미터의 대열주는 당시 팔미라가 얼마나 거대한 도시였는지를 말해준다. 도시국가로서 팔미라의 전성기는 로마의 지배를 받던 기원 전 후부터 3세기 까지, 특히 제노비아 여왕이 통치하던 시기가 그 절정이었다. 당시 이곳에는 물건을 싣고 사막을 건너는 대상의 행렬이 끊이지 않았으며 이들은 팔미라를 사막의 궁전이라고 불렀다고 한다. 도시의 기본구조는 열주 주위로 각 종 시설을 배치하는 것으로 길 양쪽으로 목욕탕, 시장, 극장, 아고라, 은행, 묘지, 신전 등을 배치했다. 로마식으로 철저히 계획된 이 도시는 16만평의 대지위에 약 3만 명의 인구가 상주했던 것으로 추정된다고 한다. 팔미라의 수호신을 모시던 벨 신전은 팔미라를 대표하는 유적의 하나다. 지금도 천정의 문양이 선명하게 남아있는 이 신전은 한 때 아랍의 성으로 이용될 정도로 견고하게 지어졌다. 팔미라는 팔미라의 클레오파트라를 자처했던 제노비아 여왕이 로마와 대적하면서 급속히 쇠퇴하였고 11세기에 지진을 겪으면서 역사에서 사라졌다. 아랍성 위에서 보는 팔미라의 모습은 팔미라의 역사를 보여주는 듯 쓸쓸하고 황량했다. 아랍성의 일몰은 아름답기로 유명하다. 그러나 오늘은 구름 때문에 제대로 된 일몰을 보지 못해 아쉬웠다.

Syria: Museum of Damascus receives Temple of Baal ceiling replica

The National Museum of Damascus received a replica of part of the ceiling of the ancient Temple of Baal from Palmyra as a gift from Italian sculptors in Damascus on Tuesday.

Italian specialists worked for almost two years to recreate a fragment of the ceiling of the Baal temple by using drawings and photographs. The copy, which is four meters long and weighs about 200 kilograms, was 3D printed.

The restorers used a variety of traditional colours and materials to give ancient archaeological character to the ceiling of the temple.

“The fact that many people are here today, I think that Syrian people really care of their cultural heritage, as they have already shown during the times of the crisis,” representative of Sapienza University of Roma Davide Nadali said.

The temple of Baal was the main shrine of Palmyra. It represented a unique combination of oriental and ancient architectures. The layout was made in the style of the shrines of the Middle East. In 2015, militants of the Islamic State destroyed the temple almost completely.

Before bringing the copy to Syria, it was exhibited in Rome, Brussels, and Paris. Now, this exhibit is available for viewing and in Damascus. After the full restoration of Palmyra, this part of the Temple of Baal will return to its historic place.

STORYLINE:
Two of the 11 Lebanese pilgrims being held hostage in Syria have declared their innocence and expressed their desire to return home in time for the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr.
The Shiite men were abducted on 22 May after crossing into Syria from Turkey on their way to Lebanon.

He said the kidnappers were demanding that Syrian authorities release 500 opposition detainees in exchange for the 11 men.
Those Lebanese hostages are in Azaz, in Aleppo. Azaz can be monitored from the Bab al-Salamah border gate. We have control over a 35 kilometre (21.7 mile) area starting from Bab al-Salamah, said Abu Ibrahim Ammar Dadikhee, a commander with the Free Syrian Army in Azaz.
Meanwhile, the head of the Azaz rebels' political office said the prisoners would be released only if Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah apologises for supporting Syrian President Bashar Assad.
In addition, the US announced sanctions on Hezbollah for providing support to the Assad regime.

Turkey launched a military operation against Kurdish fighters in northeast Syria on Wednesday, October 9th, 2019, with air strikes hitting the border town of Ras al Ain.

The operation could reshape the map of the Syrian conflict once again, dealing a blow to Kurdish-led forces that have battled Islamic State while widening Turkey’s territorial control at the border.
It was Turkey’s third such incursion since 2016. Motivated largely by the aim of containing Syrian Kurdish power, Turkey already has troops on the ground across an arc of northwestern Syria, the last stronghold of anti-Damascus jihadists.

While pilgrims from all over the world come to Jerusalem to pray at its holy sites, local Palestinian worshippers, Christians and Muslims alike, are denied free access to the city and depend on permits arbitrarily granted by the Israeli authorities. While Israel puts on a show of beneficent religious tolerance for the outside world, it quietly enforces a relentless system of Apartheid against Palestinians. Jesus would not prefer one race or group of people over another. He would condemn today's demonization and dehumanization of the Palestinian people, as well as the misrepresentations of him that only fuel ignorance and ethnocentrism.
