The doctor's play at the No Boundaries International Art Colony
These are the shorts that I made during my 2 week Residency at the No Boundaries International Art Colony.
A very magical time to create, explore and have fun on beautiful Bald Head Island with 15 other amazingly talented artists. We were a family on the island and will be lifelong friends.
At the end of the 2 weeks, all the artist's best work was hung in a beautiful show at Acme Art Studio and is now being installed in the Wilma Daniels gallery exhibition till next year. [You can also go catch this film on loop there]
This film also played as part of the 19th Cucalorus Film Festival. An honor indeed to have a spot held for a mystery film I was making up until an hour before the screening:) thanks so much to all that were involved.
1] BALD HEAD ISLAND NC
This prehistoric forest leading to the beach was the setting for our two weeks. no cars, just karts and bike seats. Jonathan and I took a journey into the woods and these trees started talking to me :)
2] Mother. Lifeguard
about 5 years ago, my friend Adam and I found a lot of 16mm footage in the trash. footage from a family's life. I took the beach vacation footage and a cartoon of a doctors visit and gave it to each artist to paint. I spliced them together and projected onto Captain Charlie's Cabin #2
3] 2013 colony Artists
I love all these people. I love our time on the island and how we inspired eachother to push the boundaries. Lots of creative energy, lots of laughs and lots of flow. Brandon Guthrie plays a sweet tune on the guitar and the narration in middle video is by one of my favorite philosophers Alan Watts check out his thought flow, it is amazing.
4] The ghost of Clodin
Everyone at the colony was visited by this ghost in some way. After hearing about the ghost stories, from years past, this red hair widow seemed to show herself in everyones artwork. Beautifully acted by Fritzi Huber and Jonathan Summit. the ballad was written by Karl Mullen and me and is performed by Karl Mullen.
5] Home is where your love is
A wonderful collaboration with Jumaadi exploring the migrant nature we have as artists moving around the world. He laid down this poem sitting outside Acme Art Studio just hours before the final cut of the film.
Thanks to everyone that made this possible.
If you would like to apply for a residency at No Boundaries Art Colony, do it!
Down the Ladder
A day in the life of a copper mining family is depicted in this emotional film presented as a silent movie. Set in Ireland in the 1800's.
An impoverished family wake in their tiny and bleak one roomed cottage. The father rises, followed by his son, about 10 years old. They eat a simple breakfast before the father gestures farewell and leaves. Some time later the boy realises that his father has forgotten a bag and dashes out the door with it. He runs across fields and clifftops with his faithful dog and reaches his father who by now is about to go down into the mine with his fellow miners.
The boy is sent back and eventually reaches his own workplace with his mother and sisters. They sort through and crush rocks by hand while deep underground the Man hammers and blasts the rock face. The boy and Man are eventually reunited above ground just before the Man departs on a rowing boat filled with copper ore in a poignant and emotional separation into the unknown.
A specially commissioned soundtrack by Irish composer Eric Sweeney is present throughout this 16 minute silent movie set in the 1800's in Ireland. The film was written by Sean Corcoran and Produced and Directed by Sean Corcoran and Angela Mulcahy of Copper Coast Productions based at The Art Hand in Bunmahon, County Waterford, Ireland.
Dedicated to the people of The Copper Coast, past and present.

This is The Copper Coast
Along the cliffs near The Art Hand on The Copper Coast near Bunmahon. A lucky little clip taken on my iPhone. The Art Hand is located at the heart of Waterford's Copper Coast between Bunmahon and Annestown in an area of outstanding natural beauty with its spectacular cliffs and panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. The area is designated by UNESCO as a geopark; a place of great geological significance. In the 18th century the area had a booming copper mining industry the remnants of which can be seen close by at the old Tankardstown Engine House.
Down the Ladder
This gives a flavour of the award-winning film, made locally by local people, which can be seen in the Copper Coast Geopark Centre in Bunmahon. The film, Down the Ladder, gives an impression of a day in the life of a miner's family in Bunmahon in the 19th century.
Speed Circles, Kids Art Technique
One of the very popular techniques we have developed for Kids @ The Art Hand classes. Kids of all ages and abilities can create Speed Circles successfully. It is a great group building technique yet each individual becomes consumed in the activity as it focuses the mind on the task at hand. The technique is based on the story of Michelangelo being awarded the commission to paint the ceiling of the Sistine by giving the Pope a drawing of Speed Circle. The version of the story that we tell the kids before they start drawing has plenty of bells and whistles on it and is used to make them pause and think while waiting in anticipation with a pencil in hand and a blank sheet of paper in front of them. It's exhilarating! Try it out!
kids @ The Art Hand is a range of art classes designed for kids and delivered at our art school called The Art Hand in Bunmahon, County Waterford, Ireland. We also teach these techniques in local primary schools. For further details please visit;
