The Christchurch Arts Centre: Rebuild Progress
The Arts Centre has been closed for repairs since the 2011 earthquakes that caused major damage to most of the buildings. This year about 8 buildings will open up to the public with more opening over the coming years. This is all part of the Christchurch rebuild and to bring people back into the centre of the city again.

New Zealand International Convention Centre Fly Through
Stunning imagery of the New Zealand International Convention Centre (NZICC), including the first glimpses inside the building, has been released today by SKYCITY Entertainment Group.
The release of the imagery and a video ‘flythrough’ of the complex follows SKYCITY’s lodgement of a resource consent application to Auckland Council for the NZICC and an adjacent five star 300-room SKYCITY hotel and pedestrian laneway to be developed separately.
The flythrough visualisation released today reveals sweeping views of key spaces inside the NZICC, which will include a large gallery, a large exhibition space (configurable for a range of events), pre-function areas with panoramic views and a large theatre adaptable for banquet and entertainment events.
Additional imagery details the exteriors of the NZICC development, including the laneway, with bars, restaurants and boutique shopping, the hotel, and the sensitive treatment of preserved historic buildings on the site.
NZICC Group General Manager, Simon Jamieson, says the lodging of a resource consent application comes after many months of comprehensive work by all involved in the project.
“For well over a year the NZICC team has been consulting and engaging extensively to prepare our resource consent application. The process we have followed has been thorough and rigorous, and we have every confidence that the convention centre will be a real asset for Auckland that will significantly enhance the inner city,’’ Mr Jamieson says.
“The NZICC will be a flexible and versatile building that integrates with its surroundings while capitalising on its location and outlook. The public gallery entrance will provide a dramatic first impression at Hobson Street, and invite people into the building to further explore its interiors. On the Nelson Street side of the NZICC, pre-function spaces command breathtaking views towards the Harbour Bridge and the Waitakere Ranges.
“The outcome of such considered design is a magnificent building that will be integrated with the grain of the city while strongly positioning Auckland as a leading international destination for major conventions and events,” says Mr Jamieson.
Design of the NZICC is a collaboration between Warren and Mahoney (as lead designers), Moller Architects and Woods Bagot Architects. Warren and Mahoney’s Chairman and Design Director, Andrew Barclay, says the NZICC is a vital piece of urban infrastructure that will play a significant role in the life of Auckland.
“Contrary to typical large-scale convention centres, this design is open and inviting for the community, right in the heart of the central city,” Mr Barclay says. “The building completely engages with the city and will fulfil a valuable role as a public amenity. It is a multi-level public space which opens directly onto both Hobson and Nelson Streets, ensuring that the city can observe and contribute to the changing life of the venue,” says Mr Barclay.
The Art Centre of Christchurch - point cloud model
Check out some of the amazing technology our teams utilise to bring their sites right to their desks. The video below shows a model of one block of The Arts Centre of Christchurch. This model was produced using 3D laser scans (point cloud) from Eliot Sinclair & Partners, along with original drawings and some onsite measurements. You’ll see users can navigate their way through the whole building, take measurements, check levels and much more—all without even visiting the site.
Christchurch Arts Centre
The Christchurch Arts Centre was a hub for arts, crafts and entertainment in Christchurch, New Zealand. It is located in the neo-gothic former University of Canterbury buildings, the majority of which were designed by Benjamin Mountfort. It is listed as a Category I building (register number 7301) by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust. Following the 2011 Christchurch earthquake, the complex is closed, will require major repair work estimated at NZ$290m, will open again in stages, with the last buildings expected to reopen in 2019.

Christchurch’s Arts Centre - A Remarkable Restoration
Philip Aldridge has been in his chief executive role for one year but he knows Christchurch’s Arts Centre intimately.
In a newly-released documentary from Frank Film, Aldridge reveals how he was on site on 22nd February, 2011 when the earthquake hit. Then, he was in charge of the Court Theatre. leading rehearsals for ‘The Mystery of Irma Vep.’
The play never made it to the stage; with the entire Arts Centre fenced off for months while engineers and insurers assessed the damage to the collection of 23 heritage buildings - the largest grouping in the country.
In a fortuitous decision, insurance cover for the complex was increased in 2010 - from around $30M to $120M and, according to Aldridge “that saved the Arts Centre.”
In total, across three separate earthquake claims, an insurance settlement of $163M was reached and by 2012 the restoration project had begun.
“It’s the biggest project of its type in the world,” says Aldridge, and is set to take a decade to complete, albeit with a current funding shortfall of $35M. That means the fenced off buildings along Worcester Street will remain an eyesore for some time yet.
Philip Aldridge admits his role now is a juxtaposition - juggling a mammoth $290M project while managing an arts organisation through financially difficult times in the inner city.
“It's a challenge in a city where rents are difficult, hospitality is a challenge, retail a big challenge so we face the same issues as the rest of the city.”
Aldridge adds “that’s part of our constitution, we’re here to provide facilities for the arts and for the public, that’s why we exist, it’s not economic.”
Anchor tenants are key, one being the University of Canterbury which has moved some classes into the buildings it originally occupied in the late 19th century.
A 33-room boutique hotel is planned for the physics and biology block, and the Lumiere Cinema - a two theatre offering operated by local cinema identity Nick Paris - is set to open in the next few weeks.
With Aldridge as tour guide, Frank Film gains entry to the refurbished creative suites for artists-in-residence. Their most recent resident, Bic Runga, will perform at a fundraising concert in the Great Hall in July.
Attention is turning to pulling more punters through the heritage doors, especially tourists.
“We get a lot of tourists,” says Aldridge. “We’re bad at turning that into money to support the site and that’s something we’re actively working on.”
