Ibahi Thura is one of the four Ashoka Stupas in Lalitpur, Nepal. This Stupa is comparatively more complex and smaller than other three. This is similar in structure of Svayambhu Mahacaitya in Kathmandu.
About Ashoka Stupas: The most remarkable feature of the town of Patan (Lalitpur) is its four Ashoka Stupas that are testimony to an ancient architectural tradition. The historians have agreed that these Stupas might have been erected in connection with the foundation of Patan towards the end of the 4th century AD.

Legend claims that the four ancient stupas marking the boundaries of Patan were built when the great Buddhist emperor Ashoka visited the valley 2500 years ago. All are worth a quick visit, especially during the auspicious full moon of August when Buddhist and Tibetan pilgrims walk around all four stupas in a single day.
Northern Stupa Just beyond the Kumbeshwar Temple, on the way to the Sankhamul ghats.
Lagan (Southern) Stupa Just south of the Lagankhel bus station, crowning a hilltop and offering good views over southern Patan.
Western Stupa Covered in grass beside the main road at Pulchowk. A set of steps leads uphill to the Aksheshwar Mahavihar, a courtyard-style Buddhist monastery on the hilltop.
Eastern Stupa Well to the east of the centre, across Kathmandu’s Ring Rd.

23 Chanting the Namsangiti
Short documentary showing how Newar Buddhists in Kathmandu and Patan gather in groups to chant the Manjushri-Namasanghiti, a text found across Asia in Mahayana communities. Its 160 verses are thought to contain a summary of the Dharma, the Buddha's teachings. Most Buddhists chant the text, many from memory, not to derive philosophical meaning, but to benefit from the sound of its words and phrases, and to earn great merit from the repetition. Chanting is done before a painting or sculpture of the image of this bodhisattva, a form of Manjushri who holds a sword and a book, the Prajnaparamita. Video created for the show, “Dharma and Punya: Buddhist Ritual Art of Nepal” at the Cantor Art Gallery, College of the Holy Cross, Fall 2019.

A small stupa in the middle of a bustling metropolitan Ashok stupa is one of my favourite places to be. Admist all the crowd and noise this place provides serenity and calmness.

It is very important for the farmers as it is celebrated before monsoon for good rain. As Lord Machhendranath views his followers from the high seat of his chariot, its fourwheels-representing the powerful Bhairab-receives rice and vermilion powder.
(Begins on the full moon day of Baisakh) This is the longest as well as the most important festival of Patan. It begins with several days of ceremonies and the fabrication of a wooden-wheeled chariot at Pulchowk, near the Ashoka Stupa.
.The chariot bears the shrine of the Rato (Red) Macchendranath (the Tantric expression of Lokeshwar) and carries a very tall spire fabricated from bamboo poles raised from four ends of the chariot. This unwieldy spire is around 10 meters tall and on account of which, the chariot balances precariously.
It is said that calamity is certain to strike the land in the event of the chariot overturning or breaking down during the course of this festival. (Quite often, it does collapse!).Following the construction, the chariot is towed through the streets of Patan by throngs of devotees every day. Each day, it is put to rest in one of the many venerated spots in the city. This goes on for a month until it comes to rest on the big field outside the zoo and end with the Bhoto Jatra, another major festival, during which the bejewelled 'bhoto' of Machhendranath is displayed to the public.
Rato Machchhindranath is considered both a Hindu and Buddhist god, who by legend was brought from Assam, by a farmer to Lalitpur valley in Nepal to prevent a drought during the rice season. It is known as Bundyo to local Newars. The longest running chariot festival in Nepal recreates this event in hope for good rain. This festival is called the Rato Machchhindranath jatra. It begins with the construction of the chariot in Pulchowk, Lalitpur and ends with the Bhoto Jatra festival in Jawalakhel. It is attended by the head of state of Nepal. It is celebrated by Buddhists and Hindus of Newar community. It is celebrated by carrying the chariot to different places in the town of Patan.
