The Astor: Australias favourite cinema
The Astor is Melbourne's oldest continuous cinema and also an important part of Australia's cultural history.
It’s the number one destination in Melbourne for people wanting to see old movies the way they intended.
Visitors from around the Australia and the world come to the Astor, which sits in a heritage listed art-deco building, to experience movie classics, cult hits and the occasional new release.
It opened as a cinema in 1936 but boasts a large screen and state of the art sound system that rivals even the most modern of cinemas.
It’s not uncommon to see the Astor packed out on Friday and Saturday nights as people come for the social aspect just as much as they do for the films.
Although the Astor remains popular its existence is constantly under threat and it almost closed down for good early in 2015. But thanks to the tireless work of Vanda Hamilton and her group The Friends of the Astor Association the famous movie house lives to fight another day.
On more than a couple of occasions the Friends of the Astor have rallied to keep the curtain up.
When old owners St Michaels Grammar School looked like they were going to redevelop the site into a school auditorium the Friends of the Astor stepped in and a groundswell of public disdain caused the school to buckle under the pressure and sell to a more Astor friendly owner.
The new owner, Ralph Taranto looked to be the saviour until he had a falling out with long-time leaseholder, George Florence, and it looked like the two parties couldn’t get a deal done.
Friends of the Astor acted as moderators between Taranto and Florence, the man who set up the Astor in its current form, but the negotiations fell through.
Florence’s lease was not renewed and the Astor looked like it was going to join the packed graveyard of old Melbourne cinemas. For Vanda this was very upsetting.
A saviour came in the form of the Palace Cinema Group when they signed a long-term lease with Taranto but the Friends of the Astor were concerned the Astor would be multiplexed like other Melbourne cinemas The Rivoli and The Westgarth.
The Palace assured Vanda that they would be keeping the Astor as it is and since the reopening in June 2015 they have kept their word.
Vanda doesn’t see that her group’s job is done and they will remain vigilant in their efforts to keep the Astor going.
In this digital age it’s very important that a cinema like the Astor is kept open so new generations still have the option to see films on the big screen. Art galleries hang classic paintings to restore hundreds of years of history and film should be treated the same.
Watch the sound-slide below to hear some of Vanda’s fondest memories of the Astor, meet the new theatre cat and get into a bit of Melbourne culture and nostalgia told through pictures.

Apollo 11 40th Anniversary Event at Astor Theatre Melbourne
Peter Aylward of The Space Association of Australia, in conjunction with the Astor Theatre, conducted a short presentation to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the landing on Apollo 11, in July, 1969. The event took place prior to the screening of 'The Right Stuff' movie, on Monday July 20, 2009.
We also had a special guest, broadcaster and 'human headline' Derryn Hinch, who was actually at Cape Kennedy to witness the launch. He gave a first hand account of his experience and then played a long lost audio recording of his live call of the launch, that was broadcast live around Australia.
Special thanks to George and his team at the Astor for the evening and also for making this video!
Please note you can purchase the audio CD of Derryn Hinch's broadcast of Apollo 11 called Liftoff! here:

Saving the Astor (2012) Documentary by Laura Hilton
Directed by: Laura Hilton
Running Time: 12 Minutes 11 Seconds
Country: Australia
The Astor Theatre is an amazing picture house in Melbourne, Australia. They show great films from cult favourites to outright classics and everything in between. Last year they had a bit of a scare regarding their lease agreement. During this time my friend Laura was attending film school and decided to make a short film to help with their cause. The Astor has since been saved and thus the film serves more as a document in history than a current PSA, but it is a great watch nonetheless !
