NEO FALIRO
#PIRAEUS #PIRAEUSPORT Faliro (Ancient Greek: Φάληρον, Phálēron; Modern Greek: Φάληρο, Fáliro; Latin: Phaleron and Phalerum) is a seaside suburb 8 km southwest of downtown Athens. There are two communities sharing the name: Palaio (Old) and Neo (New) Faliro. Palaio Faliro is a municipality, whereas Neo Faliro is part of the town of Piraeus. Although the two communities mark the northwestern and southwestern ends of the namesake Bay, they are not contiguous.
The sandy bay in the southwest, named Phaleron Bay, is lined near Poseidonos Avenue. It was the major port of Athens before Themistocles had the three rocky natural harbours by the promontory of Piraeus developed as alternative, starting from 491 BC.
Olympic venues for the 2004 Summer Olympic Games are located near the Saronic shoreline. Faliron is the resting place of the museum ship Averof, famous for action during the First Balkan War and for escaping during the battle of Greece during World War II to British-controlled Egypt.

The Athens Metro is the underground network and terrestrial metropolitan railway of the city of Athens, the Piraeus and their suburbs. The Athens metro is the only subway system in Greece. Serves the urban complex of Athens - Piraeus, which has a population of over three million inhabitants. It also offers access to Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos is located in eastern Attica.
The Athens metro network consists of three lines with 61 stations in total. On a daily basis, with metro moved an average of 1.4 million passengers in the wider area of the capital. The ongoing development project of the Athens Metro network has taken the public interest company Athens Metro. Between 2000 - 2013, added 22 metro stations in the network.
The next expansion of the metro network is expected in 2017, when due to end the works of extension of Line 3 to the center of Piraeus, which include the creation of five new metro stations. In 1992 began the construction of two new, underground metro lines. With their first operation in 2000, the line of Metro Line 1 was a new Metro network, consisting of a total of three lines. The two new lines constructed with overall responsibility for the Athens Metro SA, the public interest company in charge of the development of the network of the Athens Metro.
The Athens Metro network has a common infrastructure to newer lines (2 and 3), with the exception of section Duchess of Plaisance - Airport, and it allows the movement of subway trains in the greater part of the network. In the network of the Athens Metro and move quintuplet exadymoi trains, ie five six a.m. wagons respectively. The quintuplet trains are older types and limited to Line 1 (of power). In lines 2 and 3 routes are operated only with exadymous trains.
European Music Day celebrated on June 21, 2012 the STA.SY. SA and the National Opera with a musical performance at the Metro station Constitution, which marked the beginning of cooperation between them. Presented by the National Opera a small concert - surprise for the passengers of the Metro. The construction of lines 2 and 3 of the metro began in November 1991 to reduce traffic congestion and clean environment by reducing the level of haze of smoke from Athens.
Lines 2 and 3, built by Attiko Metro and operated by the company Attiko Metro Operations, and known as red line and blue line respectively, were inaugurated in 2000 and in 2005 had 23 stations in between. Line 3 was extended to the new Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport in the summer of 2004. The three metro lines connect to the Proastiakos, the railroad suburb of Athens and the system tram.
Since the opening of the second and third line and the total renovation of the first line of the Athens Metro is one of the more modern systems in Europe. A special feature of the central stations with ancient artefacts are designed museum similar to that provided further-away situated with artworks of contemporary Greek artists. The new Metro is used in Athens as a cultural space, held exhibitions and various other events regularly.
At the start of the route of today's Line 1 in 1869, the Athens metro was a pure electric train, which was also used for transporting goods. The gradual development into a fully fledged metro happened in 1904, the previous task took a plane parallel range of OSE. Not only in the technical equipment, but also in the design of the stations oriented themselves initially at the Berlin subway.
There are considerations to extend the metro system to a total of eight lines with more then 220 km and 200 stations. Single tickets can be purchased at the ticket machines for € 1.40 and valid for 90 minutes, including switching to another line. If you use only the line 1 (green line), a reduced ticket for 70 cents are used. To use the subway in combination with the section Doukissis Plakentias - Airport the rate of six euro is true because this route is operated in cooperation with the state railway OSE.
Designed for Athens series proved to be reliable, so you again preferred this type in the new acquisition. It acquired the MAN license, trains at Hellenic Shipyards to be manufactured with Greece.

Athens (; Greek: Αθήνα, Athína [aˈθina]; Ancient Greek: Ἀθῆναι, Athênai [a.tʰɛ̂ː.nai̯]) is the capital and largest city of Greece. Athens dominates the Attica region and is one of the world's oldest cities, with its recorded history spanning over 3,400 years and its earliest human presence starting somewhere between the 11th and 7th millennium BC.Classical Athens was a powerful city-state that emerged in conjunction with the seagoing development of the port of Piraeus, which had been a distinct city prior to its 5th century BC incorporation with Athens. A centre for the arts, learning and philosophy, home of Plato's Academy and Aristotle's Lyceum, it is widely referred to as the cradle of Western civilization and the birthplace of democracy, largely because of its cultural and political impact on the European continent, and in particular the Romans. In modern times, Athens is a large cosmopolitan metropolis and central to economic, financial, industrial, maritime, political and cultural life in Greece. In 2012, Athens was ranked the world's 39th richest city by purchasing power and the 67th most expensive in a UBS study.
Athens is a global city and one of the biggest economic centres in southeastern Europe. It has a large financial sector, and its port Piraeus is both the largest passenger port in Europe, and the second largest in the world.
The Municipality of Athens (also City of Athens) had a population of 664,046 (in 2011) within its administrative limits, and a land area of 38.96 km2 (15.04 sq mi). The urban area of Athens (Greater Athens and Greater Piraeus) extends beyond its administrative municipal city limits, with a population of 3,090,508 (in 2011) over an area of 412 km2 (159 sq mi). According to Eurostat in 2011, the functional urban area (FUA) of Athens was the 9th most populous FUA in the European Union (the 6th most populous capital city of the EU), with a population of 3.8 million people. Athens is also the southernmost capital on the European mainland.

The Athens Metro is a rapid-transit system in Greece which serves the Athens conurbation and parts of East Attica. It incorporates the former Athens-Piraeus Electric Railways (ISAP), which opened as a conventional steam railway in 1869, and which was electrified in 1904 and is now part of Line 1. Beginning in 1991, Attiko Metro constructed and extended Lines 2 and 3 and the Attiko Metro Operations Company (AMEL) operated these lines from 2000 to 2011. The metro network merged in 2011 when the Greek government created the Urban Rail Transport Company (STASY), a subsidiary of the Athens Urban Transport Organisation (OASA). First Chairman and CEO of the merged company became Kostas Vassiliadis, a former Chief Engineer and later CEO of Athens-Piraeus Electric Railways. It has significantly changed Athens by providing a much-needed solution to the city's traffic and air pollution problem, as well as revitalising many of the areas it serves. An extension of Line 3 is under construction towards Piraeus and also other extensions of existing lines, as well as a new line, are under consideration. The Athens Metro is actively connected with the other means of public transport, such as buses, trolleys, the Athens Tram and the Proastiakos suburban railway.

I.S.A.P. is the acronym for the Athens–Piraeus Electric Railways, the oldest urban rapid transit system of Athens metropolitan area in Greece. Opened as a suburban railway line connecting Athens with the nearby major port city of Piraeus, it was gradually converted to full rapid transit operations, making it one of the oldest metro lines in the world. The current line evolved from the older Athens & Piraeus Railway and Lavrion Square-Strofyli railway. In June 2011 ISAP was absorbed by a new transport company, STASY S.A.
The line from Piraeus to Thision was inaugurated on February 27, 1869 as a steam train connecting Athens and its port, Piraeus, and was operated by Athens & Piraeus Railway Co. The project was considered important, so Queen Olga and the Prime Minister Thrasyvoulos Zaimis attended the inauguration ceremony. There were 8 trains in each direction daily and 9 trains in each direction on Sundays.
In 1874 the Athens & Piraeus Railway Company was bought by the Bank of Industrial Credit. Under the new ownership the railway procured additional rolling stock. Soon the line was extended to Omonoia Square with an underground section constructed with the cut-and-cover method.
The line was electrified in 1904 using the 600 V DC, third rail, top contact system (today increased to 750 V DC) by Thomson Houston.

Monastiraki (English: Monastery) station is an interchange station on the Athens Metro, between Lines 1 and 3. The original Monastirion surface station on Line 1 opened in May 17, 1895. It became an interchange point of the network when the underground station of Line 3 opened in April 22, 2003. It is located in the historic center of Athens, near the neighborhood of Plaka. The station is right beneath the Acropolis and next to the site of the Ancient Agora of Athens.

Winter at Trachina Rail Pass, January 2018.
Only two weeks before the end of a legendary and historic route of the Hellenic Railays. The breathtaking Trachina rail pass at its best era, with the water coming from the top of Mt.Oiti making the waterfalls really fascinating. The daily traffic to and from Thessaloniki is also a little more interesting with the transfering accross the mountain of electric Siemens Hellas Sprinterlocomotives, on train IC52 and IC53, after the electrification of Athens-Tithorea part.

Special Reoperation of Kalamata Depot
During the special temporary reoperation of Kalamata-Messini line in the second half of September, the central depot of southern Hellas in Kalamata saw some of its old glory. Trains moving again on its rails and people working under its roof again. Next to the MAN1 DMUs that were going to serve the suburban line, the old rulers of the meter gauge line...the glory of Peloponnese now forgoten and stored in the depot. Some others are rusting at the sidings. However, the sound of the engine in the building makes the railfan to imagine and hope for the best...
In this video you are going to see the preperations on the trains for the first train of this year's event and as well as some of the museum trains that are stored at Kalamata depot (mostly you will see those stabled into the main building). In the next video you are going to see shots from the line and te trains that ran on it for 9 days.
