Ideas into action – sustainable farming, central Eyre Peninsula
Farmers in the Wudinna, Yaninee and Mt Damper region, central Eyre Peninsula, identified a need to form a group for younger farmers to share experiences and increase their knowledge in sustainable agriculture. Following a few discussions, twenty five farmers, who manage over 121,000ha of cropping and grazing country, formed the Wudinna, Yaninee, Mt Damper Sustainable Agriculture group in 2015.
The group have already put their ideas into action by established tillage trials where they;
• compared the performance of a number of seeding bars
• installed soil moisture probes to help make better farming decision through the cropping season
• dug soils pits to gain a better understanding of limitations to production and how soil structure can be improved
• and held five workshops for local women to gain a better understanding of cereal production through the year.
Networking, friendships and support for farming families, increased awareness of the issues that may impact sustainability and exploring ideas and new technologies to increase production in the district are key aims for the group.
The use of social media has been an important tool for the group with the farmers using twitter to exchange information and the women involved in the Cereal Production workshop formed a Facebook site to share experiences.
The activities shown in this film are supported by the Eyre Peninsula Natural Resources Management Board through funding from the Australian Government

Pildappa Rock is a unique pink inselberg located 15 kilometres northeast of Minnipa. Situated in South Australia's granite country, locals proudly proclaim Pildappa to rival the more famous Wave Rock - a sandstone wave form located in Hyden Western Australia.
Formed about 1500 million years ago Pildappa Rock is part of the vast Gawler Craton - a geological shield structure covering central Eyre Peninsula, the Gawler Ranges and large parts of outback South Australia. Geologists refer to Pildappa Rock and other inselbergs in the area as belonging to the Hiltaba suite of rocks - basically orthoclase rich pink granites dating from Eyre Peninsula's Precambrian age.
Nearby the Gawler Ranges were formed as a result of volcanic action. Unlike the Gawler Ranges however, Eyre Peninsula's inselbergs were formed as Batholiths or granite domes some 7 kilometres below the earth's surface. Clearly much soil erosion has occurred during the past 1500 million years. Equally remarkably, Pildappa Rock and many other Australian inselbergs exhibit very slow rates of weathering - with numerous studies indicating exposed granite surfaces eroding at rates below 50 centimetres per million years.
