The Backs, Cambridge University Campus, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, United Kingdom
The Backs are an area of parkland, trees, and waterways facing the River Cam and the back of the University of Cambridge Campus in England. The University of Cambridge is the 2nd oldest university in England (and the English-speaking world) after Oxford. It is also the 4th oldest surviving university in the world.
The university is located in the town of Cambridge, England (population about 132,000). There are several other places named Cambridge in the world, notably the towns of Cambridge, Massachusetts and Cambridge in Ontario, Canada. Cambridge is in Cambridgeshire County in southeastern England, northeast of London. The land around it is flat and the lowlying Fens are nearby. The River Cam flows through the town and past the university.
Cambridge is a university town. The town itself isn't very big, but the university attracts lots of students, so that students make up a big percentage of the population. Students make up about 15% of the town's population, and more locals work in the university.
Cambridge University has several big and imposing buildings. The older buildings at the University of Toronto (U of T), Toronto's oldest university, are probably smaller-scale imitations of the buildings at Cambridge and Oxford universities. You can see the rear views of some of these buildings from the Backs.

The Backs - Cambridge
It's funny but when something is on your doorstep, you tend to take it for granted. Well for me, Cambridge was just one of those locations.
As I mainly shoot landscape and seascape I ignored Cambridge as I work there every day, but I can assure you that I will be shooting there a lot more in the future.
I was really pleased with my early morning shots, especially the ones of Queens. However the wide black and white image (actually my favourite image) has a nasty lens flare and if I cannot get rid of it in PS, I will have to go back and re-shoot it.
Thanks for watching and until next weeks video.
See ya.
From the Front to the Backs: the story of the 1st Eastern General Hospital, Cambridge
One hundred years after the start of the First World War, few Cambridge residents are likely to be aware that the University Library stands on the site of a former military hospital. The First Eastern General, set up within days of the outbreak of the war, treated tens of thousands of returning casualties between 1914 and 1919.
Dr Sarah Baylis looks at the lost history of the First Easter, examining what life was like is this 'small city on the Backs', its impact on Cambridge and how it was possible that a building of such significance should have been so widely forgotten. It underlines the military hospital's central role in Cambridge as a site of profound individual and collective experience.

Cambridge Backs in spring
The Backs is a picturesque area to the east of Queen's Road in the city of Cambridge, England, where several colleges of the University of Cambridge back on to the River Cam, their grounds covering both banks of the river. The name the Backs refers to the backs of the colleges. The area, from Magdalene Street bridge in the north to Silver Street bridge in the south, consists of the rear grounds of the following colleges (north to south):
Magdalene — grounds on the west bank of the river before the Magdalene Street bridge.
St John's — buildings on both sides of the river, spanned by the St John's kitchen bridge and the Bridge of Sighs
Trinity — buildings on the east bank, spanned by Trinity bridge.
Trinity Hall — buildings on the east bank but with no rear grounds on the west bank.
Clare — buildings on the east bank, spanned by Clare bridge.
King's — buildings on the east bank, spanned by King's bridge.
Queens' — buildings on both sides of the river, spanned by the Mathematical Bridge

#Cambridge is an academic city and the county town of #Cambridgeshire, #England, on the River Cam approximately 50 miles (80 km) north of London. #Cambridge became an important trading centre during the #Roman and #Viking ages, and there is #archaeological evidence of settlement in the area as early as the Bronze Age.

Cambridge: College Backs Boat Tour (4)
King's College Chapel is one of the most famous medieval buildings in England. The foundation stone was laid in 1446. Gibbs' Building , named after its architect
James Gibbs , was begun in 1724. It is constructed in White Portland Stone.
There is a striking contrast between the late Gothic architecture of the chapel and the classical facade of the Gibbs building.
The Wilkins' Building was completed in 1828.
Silver Street, The Backs, Queens Road
This starts along a short section along a usually quiet road and then stays off-road as much as possible. Route in Cambridge Video Clip Cycling Guide, as described at
This starts along a short section along a usually quiet road. The bridge works means the light have held traffic back.
Crossing Queens Green be aware of people walking and give them plenty of space. Staying offroad after that maybe a bit slower, but it is a lot nicer and avoids the traffic on Queens Road for as long as possible.
At Garrets Hostel Lane, take great care of people walking and riding in either direction across your path.
Finally join Queens Road where it's not quite as narrow as earlier.
