Man living dream with 1st pitch at Sam Lynn Ballpark
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) - Thursday was opening night at Sam Lynn Ballpark, and the Bakersfield Blaze started off their season against the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes.
But, for one man, it’s not about the game or the beginning of the season. It’s about the beginning of his journey, a quest to become the first blind man to throw the first pitch and sing the National Anthem at every minor and major league ballpark in the United States.
Now, if you’ve gone to a baseball game, you’ve probably seen a lot of ceremonial first pitches.
Some of them are celebrities. We’ve seen President Barack Obama try to make it past home plate. We’ve also seen some pretty bad bloopers.
But, none of them were blindfolded.
Robert F. Smith’s ceremonial first pitch isn’t supposed to be a blooper. It’s supposed to be the first step into making it into the history books.
The thing about Sam Lynn Ballpark is that it’s one of the only stadiums in the world built where the sun sets in the batters eyes, because the park faces west.
That makes no difference to Smith, and it’s not just because he’s on the mound. It’s because the sunglasses he wears aren’t coming off.
“Just because you're blind doesn't mean you can't do anything,” he said.
Smith is already booked for 19 out of the 20 minor league parks in California. He has a ways to go, but he thinks it’ll only take about three years to complete.
He also wants to perform 1 million acts of kindness along the way.
“You guys can say you're the first,” said Smith. “This is what the world really needs. It just needs 'L - O - V - E,' that four letter word. That's what my father taught me.”
Robert Smith’s dad is Grammy-winner O.C. Smith. The name of his campaign is “Little Green Apples,” named after his dad’s hit song.
He’s just lucky enough to inherit his dad’s voice, and he proved it by singing the National Anthem.
Singing may come easy, but pitching is difficult. He hasn’t ever even seen one.
“It could be a good pitch,” said Dane Compton, one of the kids in the stands, not knowing what to expect. “It could be a bad pitch. It could be a normal pitch.”
That’s why Smith has been practicing.
“You're not used to winding up. It's just not something that a blind person usually does in life,” he said. “Literally I didn't even know how to throw 15 feet.”
Well, that’s not exactly encouraging.
“I was a little dude,” said Smith. “I only weighed 1 pound, 3 ounces. So, miracle baby, and I just kept on stepping.
Still, when it came time for the actual pitch, it went a lot farther than 15 feet.
It may not have been a strike, but dad would be proud.
“I would hope that my dad is looking down on me from heaven,” said Smith. “Pop, I love you!”

CHECK OUT THE LINKS BELOW. April 10, 2010 — Tea Partiers in Nashville, Tennessee were treated to the worldwide debut of Victoria Jackson's upcoming single I HOPE I DON'T GET SICK. This song was apparently inspired by Barack Obama and all the boneheads who voted for him. She was also at the Tea Party in Clinton Township, MI on April 11, 2010. I was there too, and got to meet her. She's sooo nice! This was THE BEST Tea Party I've been to. Michigan Tea Parties are THE BEST!
I missed being in Nashville by just ONE day, darnit! I wish I could've been there to see Victoria just once! She's awesome! ♥~♥~♥
See Victoria on CBN - she's a born-again Christain!

EXPLORING AN ABANDONED BASEBALL STADIUM: JOE DAVIS STADIUM IN HUNTSVILLE ALABAMA
EXPLORING AN ABANDONED BASEBALL STADIUM: JOE DAVIS STADIUM IN HUNTSVILLE ALABAMA
Joe W. Davis Stadium is a minor league baseball park in Huntsville, Alabama, United States, which hosted the Huntsville Stars of the Southern League from 1985 until 2014, and then served as a temporary home for the Stars' successor (the Biloxi Shuckers)
Built in 1985, the stadium is located on the grounds of Huntsville's former airport, adjacent to Huntsville's main north–south thoroughfare, U.S. Highway 231 (S. Memorial Parkway).[4] The stadium is a multi-purpose facility that seats 10,488 with 15 air-conditioned skyboxes. Ticket offices and the general office are located on the second floor of the stadium. Closed circuit television above the main concourse allows for viewing of the game while grabbing a bite at the concession stands. In addition to baseball, Joe W. Davis Stadium has been used for high school football, monster truck rallies, and concerts.
Nicknamed The Crown Jewel of the Southern League upon its construction, the stadium was the oldest venue in the league during its final year of operation.
The stadium is named for the longtime mayor of Huntsville, Joe W. Davis, who was instrumental in the city's efforts to construct the stadium. Construction came about in 1984 after Nashville Sounds owner Larry Schmittou purchased the Evansville Triplets with the intent of moving the team in 1985 to Nashville, Tennessee to effectively elevate his Double-A Sounds to the Triple-A level. As a result of this move, the existing Double-A franchise needed a new home. Schmittou considered a swap, which would have sent the Double-A team to Evansville, Indiana to replace the Triplets. Evansville city leaders balked at the requested stadium upgrades, leading Schmittou to seek alternate arrangements, which resulted in the franchise's move to Huntsville. The team became known as the Huntsville Stars, and Schmittou continued to own the franchise until selling it to a local ownership group in 1994.
The first game was held on April 19, 1985. The Stars defeated the Birmingham Barons 10-0 in a game that included a grand slam from future major-leaguer Jose Canseco.[5]
In the mid-2000s, renovations began on the stadium, including the replacement of all the stadium's box seats. In 2004, Joe Davis Stadium's current scoreboard, a 36-by-48-foot scoreboard complete with LED numbering and a 12-by-18-foot videoboard, was installed.
In 2014, the Stars were sold to an ownership group with the intent of relocating the franchise to Biloxi, Mississippi at the end of the season.[6] The sale followed years of failed attempts to secure a new ballpark for the team in Huntsville.[7] However, due to construction delays preventing the new Biloxi stadium from being completed in time for the Southern League's 2015 opening day, and because the franchise was still operating under a lease to use Joe Davis Stadium, the newly-christened Biloxi Shuckers played 15 of its first 25 scheduled home games in Huntsville.[5] (The remaining ten home games were played with Biloxi acting as the home team on its opponents' home fields.)
The final game at Joe Davis Stadium was played on May 25, 2015 – a 7-2 rain-shortened win for the Shuckers over the Barons.[8]
The Huntsville city government, which has owned the stadium since its construction, planned to demolish it sometime in 2015.[5] As of July 2017, the stadium is still standing.
