ULTIMATE WORLDSCHOOLING at The Bamboo Experience in Luang Prabang, Laos with Kids
We had the most AMAZING day at The Bamboo Experience in Luang Prabang, Laos. We spent the entire day learning about various things you can do with Bamboo. We learned about Hmong and Khmu tribal cultures, walked on bamboo stilts, played with bamboo toys, played Petanque, shot bamboo crossbows, and weaved our own bamboo mats.
We also prepared our lunch by smashing sticky rice and separating it from the husks. We then helped make Mok Pa (steamed river fish), pickled bamboo jaew, salted dried bamboo jaew, stir-fried bamboo shoots, bamboo soup, and stuffed bamboo with pork. The meal was so fresh, flavorful and fun. We especially loved the bamboo candy at the end of the meal!
After eating we were treated to a Hmong song and dance and we got to participate. It was a wonderful day!! We learned so much and had so much fun. Probably the highlight of our trip to Luang Prabang.

The Bamboo Experience - Your Way of Discovery Laos
While in Luang Prabang, I visit the Bamboo Experience. A wonderful cultural experience that highlights the amazing bamboo plant and how it continues to play a frequent role in the lives' of Lao people.
Luang Prabang, Laos - A Small Group Experience
Luang Prabang in Laos is one of the most peaceful places I've been. This is picture-postcard South East Asia.
Luang Prabang is the sound of chanting coming from temples as you walk along the Mekong River just as the sun sets on another beautiful day. It's rising early to see the monks collect their alms from local ladies before you sample the colour, tastes and smells of the market.
It's about learning the traditions of Buddhism from a monk and putting those traditions to practice at the local temple. It's about climbing Phousi Mountain to catch the views of the Mekong and strolling on the Bamboo Bridge to cross the Nam Khan River.
It's about learning the ways of the land at a living farm and then cleaning the feet and the soul at the Kuang Si Waterfalls.
It's about rediscovering yourself as you discover the beauty of Laos and Luang Prabang.

Living Rice Experience (Luang Prabang, Laos)
A great opportunity to experience the hard life of a farmer and try your hand at some of the activities, such as working with Rudolph the water buffalo, in knee-deep muddy rice paddies. Enjoyable and very educational, you will learn about the 13 steps and various methods involved in planting, growing, harvesting and cooking rice. The day will end on step 14, trying a huge range of sweet and savoury rice based snacks.
Sticky rice is a staple for the people of Laos. On average, one person will eat 20 kilograms or 44 lbs of rice per month.
Luang Prabang Morning Market & YUMMY LAO NOODLES! - Laos with Kids
On our last day in Luang Prabang, Laos, we had fun exploring the morning market, where we saw people selling owls, giant Mekong catfish, live snails, beautiful textiles, and everything in between.
We stopped at a small hole in the wall restaurant to try 3 different noodle dishes. Todd's was the best as it had a rich coconut milk broth.
We took an evening swim in our hotel pool which had the most amazing view. The hotel we stayed in was the Luang Prabang View Hotel... I guess the name fits!

Farming rice in Luang Prabang, Laos!
Next stop on the Stray tour was Luang Prabang, Laos! It took me about 1 hour to fall in love with this town. It's situated on a little hill with streets lining the river and views of the distant mountains. The place is clean, organized, and just has a really safe, family-friendly vibe to it. There are also some fun things to do including the rice experience, where you learn to farm, harvest and cook (and eat!) famous Laos sticky rice, and also a really nice waterfall called Kuang Si Waterfall. Our favorite bar was Utopia!

Tamarind Cookery School , Luang Prabang, Laos
I love a local cookery course when travelling with a camera and have done so in Italy, Malaysia and Cambodia. However, the Tamarind Cookery School in Luang Prabang excelled themselves. Great customer service from start to finish.
The course lasts around 6 hours. You are taken to the local market, Phousi, (which is amazing) and learn about the local ingredients. As you can see, rat is a local ingredient but not included in your recipes ????. Then, you move onto an exquisite location for the course itself. Sit who was our guide and teacher was amazing - excellent English among other languages and good jokes too!
You are shown the recipes and process first, then return to your bench to prepare with help from Sit. You cook over open coals with help again from Sit and the team. Our recipes included fish steamed in banana leaf / lemongrass stuffed chicken / buffalo salad / locals dips / sticky rice. The groups are no larger than 12 people. You then enjoy your fayre and eat together.
A bargain at less than £25 per person.

Luang Prabang Cooking Class: Delicious Lao Cuisine
For our first time in Laos, we decided to take a cooking class in Luang Prabang, the culinary capital. This Luang Prabang cooking class is one of the best way to understand Lao cuisine and the local flavors.
This Luang Prabang cooking class takes place at the Heuan Chan Heritage House. With our cooking instruction Keo, we learned how to make six traditional Lao foods.
This Luang Prabang cooking class video focuses on the five Lao foods we found to be the most surprising.
Khao Chii - Grilled sticky rice cakes
Jaew - Dipping sauce
Tom Jaew Hed -Mushroom soup
Au Ka Lampi -Cabbage stuffed with pork
Tom Kai Sai Khin Ginger chicken soup
This is Claire and Rosemary from Authentic Food Quest on a mission to explore and showcase the local foods and flavors of a destination.
For an introduction into Lao cuisine and cooking, we could not have asked for more. The class was intimate, just the both of us, and for more than four hours, we talked, ate and had a great time.
Keo, our warm and generous cooking instructor made us feel right at home. Her teaching style is relaxed and loose and we greatly appreciated our conversations about Lao foods.
You can book your Luang Prabang cooking class on Cookly website here:
The Heuan Chan Heritage House is located in the old quarter behind Wat Xieng Mouane. You’ll find it at the tranquil gardens at Xieng Thong Village.
Classes are offered daily starting at 3:00pm. This includes a tour of the heritage house and learning how to cook 4 - 6 dishes
Cost: $39.00 per person
Book your class today here:
For more Luang Prabang cooking classes, see more classes here:
Special thanks to Cookly and the Heuan Chan Heritage House for having us on this tour. All views and opinions expressed are our own. Full bellies and happy taste buds too.

Village Food in Laos - SPICY CHILI WOOD and AUTHENTIC KHMU FOOD in Luang Prabang!

►Highly recommend White Elephant Adventures:
During our trip to Luang Prabang, one of my goals was to experience authentic Laos culture. So we set off on a 2 day excursion, into the mountains, not too far from Luang Prabang. The first day we’d spend learning about the Khmu culture and eating local authentic Khmu food. The next day, we’d move onto a Hmong village to eat Hmong food.
We met up with Alex and his team from White Elephant Adventures ( This is not sponsored, I paid in full for this tour, but Alex and his team were gracious to really set us up with a custom tour about food and culture. I highly recommend them for off the beaten path, authentic culture tours in Luang Prabang.
It wasn’t too long of a drive, and we stopped at a variety of markets along the way, but we eventually made it to the Khmu village. It happened to be the village of our guide. It was a gorgeous village, by the river. For lunch we had some simple bamboo shoot mixtures wrapped in banana leaf and steamed. Khmu mainly eat sticky rice.
After lunch we walked around, took a swim in the river, and just hung out, waiting for the dinner festivities.
We purposefully didn’t really make too much of a plan, because we wanted to just see what unfolded naturally at the village. They decided to butcher a small pig for the village and for the evening festivities. They also planned a baci ceremony - a Laos ceremony of blessing, which was an amazing experience and left me feeling so incredibly welcome.
Anyway, after the afternoon swim, the men got started butchering the pig and parting off each piece of meat - serious nose to tail dining - to the person who was designated to cook each different dish. What was amazing to me is that everyone in the community had a role, and each worked diligently for the greater community.
There were so many different local Khmu Lao foods being prepared that I could hardly keep up. But one of the most interesting dishes for me was the or lam, a well know Lao Khmu dish, but this version unlike anything I had tried before. One of the single most amazing ingredient is spicy chili wood - it’s actually a vine that grows in the jungle, and it is really spicy and makes your tongue tingle.
The baci ceremony was spectacular, the meal of all things pig with the community was special, and at the end of the night the children from the village sang us a couple of songs.
It was a fantastic day, delicious authentic and fresh Lao Khmu food, and an incredible time to learn about Khmu culture, and interact with the community.
Thank you for watching!
