Staying at the Chulia Heritage Hotel in George Town - Penang, Malaysia Travel Video
Seeking comfort without paying a fortune, we decided to check in and stay at the Chulia Hertiage Hotel located in the heart of historic George Town on Penang Island, Malaysia. It's incredible how much our preferences and expectations have changed in such a short period of time. Only several months ago, we were staying in George Town, and our accommodations were much more humble. During that time, our guesthouse was nothing more than a tiny room with an old mattress, wobbly chair/desk and a fan that barely worked. The wifi in the room had a poor signal and considering how hot and humid it was outside, we literally felt like we were in a sauna with hot air blowing all around us. At the time, we were concerned with sticking to a strict budget and not spending extra for creature comforts.

Our standards have since increased significantly. When we first started out backpacking around SE Asia, I wrote an article ( where I discussed the challenges of being a digital nomad for the first time. In hindsight, I realize many of the issues we faced - of trying to balance work and play -stemmed from our environment.
During our carefree days of backpacking, when we were content staying in pokey rooms while trying to maximize our savings, it was fine to give up certain comforts in order to extended our journey given our dwindling bank accounts; however, now that we're earning money online and trying to run a business on the road we need a certain level of comfort that allows us to utilize our time optimally.
For example, long gone are the days we'd prefer to stay in dorms, party hostels or budget guest houses that don't offer air conditioning, clean showers, a quiet environment and reliable wifi.
Luckily, this time around we were able to find a great value budget Boutique Hotel that fits our new flashbacking ways. The Chulia Heritage hotel is located in an atmospheric part of George Town yet is nestled away from the hustle and bustle of noisy - and ever chaotic - Lebua Chulia (Chulia Street). As a former mansion in decay, this lovely refurbished guest house is like stepping back in time. With photos adorning the walls of its crumbling old charms, one can visually experience what it was like in the past while stepping on its creaky floor.
The rooms are nicely finished in pure white with a generous sized queen bed, drawer, night stand, modern television and air conditioning unit. The wifi - for the most part - works rather well. The bathrooms are shared (quite typical in Malaysia) but unlike other guest houses I've stayed at, these were impeccably clean.
Our stay was NOT sponsored and we paid out of pocket for the rooms. Coming in at 80 Ringgit, we thought the price we paid versus the value we received was excellent. We thought it would be interesting sharing our experiences staying at this hotel with plenty of history, quirks and modern day charms:

George Town[1] (less commonly also spelt Georgetown,[2]) is the capital of the state of Penang in Malaysia. Named after Britain's King George III, George Town is located on the north-east corner of Penang Island. The inner city has a population of 720,202 and the metropolitan area known as George Town Conurbation which consists of Penang Island, Seberang Prai, Sungai Petani and Kulim has a combined population of 2,251,042, making it the second largest metropolitan area in Malaysia.[3]
Formerly a municipality and then a city in its own right, since 1976 George Town has been part of the Municipality of Penang Island, though the area formerly governed by the City Council of George Town is still commonly referred to as a city. George Town is also known as Tanjung (The Cape) in Malay, 乔治市 (Qiáozhì Shì) in Chinese and ஜோர்ஜ் டவுன் (Georgetown) in Tamil. Its Malay name is derived from the older name of the town, Tanjung Penaga (Cape Penaigre).
The inner city of George Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
George Town was founded on 11 August 1786 by Captain Francis Light, a trader for the British East India Company, as base for the company in the Malay States. He obtained the island of Penang from the Sultan of Kedah and built Fort Cornwallis on the north-eastern corner of the island. The fort became the nexus of a growing trading post and the island's population reached 12,000 by 1804.[citation needed]
The town was built on swampy land that had to be cleared of vegetation, levelled and filled. The original commercial town was laid out between Light Street, Beach Street (then running close to the seashore), Malabar Street (subsequently called Chulia Street) and Pitt Street (now called Masjid Kapitan Keling Street).
The warehouses and godowns extended from Beach Street to the sea. By the 1880s, there were ghauts leading from Beach Street to the wharf and jetties as Beach Street receded inland due to land reclamation. A new waterfront was created at Weld Quay, where commercial buildings sprang up.
The historic commercial centre was segmented into the banking and trading areas related to port activities which included shipping companies, the import and export trade, and the wholesalers who dominate the southern section of Beach Street until now. It has been listed as a World Heritage site since July 2008.[4]
At the turn of the 19th century, the northern section of Beach Street and the adjacent Bishop Street were the 'high street' where the 'modern' European emporium and stores selling imported merchandise were situated.
Among the early foreign companies that located their offices on Beach Street were the Netherlands Trading Society, the Hongkong & Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC), the Chartered Bank, Boustead & Co., Guthne & Co., Caldbeck & Macgregor, Behn Meyer, Sandilands & Buttery, G.H. Slot and the stores of Pritchard & Co., Whiteaway, Laidlaw & Co., and others. Among the local businesses that were established here during this period were H.M. Nooradin, Tiang Lee & Co., Guan Lee Hin Steamship, Tye Sin Tat, Pinang Sales Room, Koe Guan and others. Penang's first petroleum lamps were installed on this section of Beach Street by Huttenbach & Co..

BEST thing to do in PENANG - Entopia Butterfly Garden Malaysia
The best thing to do in Penang is an incredible butterfly garden called Entopia. Experiencing thousands of butterflies and releasing them into their habitat made this one of the best things to do in Penang, Malaysia in our opinion. Watch these amazing butterflies fly in slow motion and enjoy the Entopia Butterfly Garden Malaysia!
Ever since we started traveling Ryan has wanted to film a butterfly garden. It was his idea to come to Entopia Penang and walk the grounds. We were in awe at how many beautiful butterflies were flying around this Penang butterfly farm! We know Entopia is one of the best things to do in Penang with kids, but we weren’t expecting to love it so much ourselves.
Our favorite part of the Entopia butterfly garden Malaysia was being able to release new butterflies into their habitat for the first time. Each butterfly we released was flying into the wild for the very first time which felt like a really special moment. Stacia’s butterfly latched onto her finger and wouldn’t let go! We think he was afraid to take his first flight, so we strolled around the butterfly garden with our new little friend on Stacia’s finger until he was ready to fly.
Out of all the activities in Penang, this is one of the most well organized places to visit with a family or small group. Because they need to keep the conditions warm for the butterflies to thrive, Entopia is quite humid so dress accordingly. Finding outdoor activities in Penang outside of George Town Penang and Batu Ferringhi is a little tough, but we can highly recommend adding Entopia to your trip list. Being the best thing to do in Penang Malaysia for a family day trip, Entopia charges a moderate entrance fee of about $15 USD per adult and less for children.

Georgetown, Penang by drone
George Town, the capital city of the Malaysian state of Penang, is located at the northeastern tip of Penang Island. It is Malaysia's second largest city, with 708,127 inhabitants as of 2010, while Greater Penang is the nation's second most populous conurbation with an estimated population of 2.5 million.[6][7][8] The historical core of George Town has been inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008.[9]
Established as an entrepôt by Francis Light of the British East India Company in 1786, George Town was the first British settlement in Southeast Asia.[10] Together with Singapore and Malacca, George Town formed part of the Straits Settlements, which became a British crown colony in 1867. It was subjugated by Japan during World War II, before being recaptured by the British at war's end. Shortly before Malaya attained independence from the British in 1957, George Town was declared a city by Queen Elizabeth II, making it the first city in the country's modern history.
Due to the intermingling of the various ethnicities and religions that arrived on its shores, George Town acquired a large eclectic assortment of colonial and Asian architectural styles.[11] It also gained a reputation as Malaysia's gastronomic capital for its distinct and ubiquitous street food.[12][13][14] Moreover, the city hosts unique cultural heritage, such as the Peranakans, a hybrid ethnicity which has left its mark on Penang's architecture and cuisine.
Today, George Town is Malaysia's most vital medical tourism hub, receiving approximately half of the nation's medical tourists.[15][16][17] The city, home to numerous Malaysian and international banks, has evolved into the financial centre of northern Malaysia. In addition, George Town is logistically well-connected; the Penang International Airport to the south links it with several major regional cities, while a ferry service and the Penang Bridge connects the city with the rest of Peninsular Malaysia. The city's Swettenham Pier has also emerged as the busiest port-of-call in Malaysia for cruise shipping.[18][19]
