Damascus is the capital and the second largest city of Syria after Aleppo. Both are part of the country's 14 governorates. In addition to being one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, Damascus is a major cultural and religious center of the Levant. The city has an estimated population of 1,711,000 (2009 est.).
Located in southwestern Syria, Damascus is the center of a large metropolitan area of 2.6 million people (2004).[3] Geographically embedded on the eastern foothills of the Anti-Lebanon mountain range 80 kilometres (50 mi) inland from the eastern shore of the Mediterranean on a plateau 680 metres (2,230 ft) above sea-level, Damascus experiences a semi-arid climate due to the rain shadow effect. The Barada River flows through Damascus.

Damascus: Damascus is the capital of Syria; it is also the countrys largest city, following the decline in population of Aleppo due to the battle for the city. It is colloquially known in Syria as aš-Šām and titled the City of Jasmine. Damascus is a major cultural center of the Levant and the Arab world. The city has an estimated population of 1,711,000 as of 2009. Located in south-western Syria, Damascus is the center of a large metropolitan area of 2.7 million people. Geographically embedded on the eastern foothills of the Anti-Lebanon mountain range 80 kilometres inland from the eastern shore of the Mediterranean on a plateau 680 metres above sea level, Damascus experiences a semi-arid climate because of the rain shadow effect. The Barada River flows through Damascus. First settled in the second millennium BC, it was chosen as the capital of the Umayyad Caliphate from 661 to 750. After the victory of the Abbasid dynasty, the seat of Islamic power was moved to Baghdad. Damascus saw a political decline throughout the Abbasid era, only to regain significant importance in the Ayyubid and Mamluk periods. Today, it is the seat of the central government and all of the government ministries. [wikipedia // Google]

Damascus (Arabic: دِمَشقُ, Dimashq, commonly known as الشام ash-Shām also known as the City of Jasmin Arabic: مدينة الياسمين) is the capital and largest city of Syria as well as one of the country's 14 governorates. The Damascus Governorate is ruled by a governor appointed by the Minister of Interior. In addition to being widely known as the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world, Damascus is a major cultural and religious center of the Levant.
Currently, the city has an estimated population of about 1,669,000. Unofficial estimates often assume a much larger population. Located in southwestern Syria, it is the center of a large metropolitan area of four million people.[citation needed] Geographically embedded on the eastern foothills of the Anti-Lebanon mountain range 80 km (50 mi) inland from the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea on a plateau 680 metres (2,200 ft) above sea-level. Damascus experiences a semi-arid climate due to the rain shadow effect. The Barada River flows through Damascus.
First settled in the 2nd millennium BC, it was chosen as the capital of the Umayyad Caliphate from 661-750. After the victory of the Abbasid dynasty, the seat of Islamic power was moved to Baghdad. Damascus saw a political decline throughout the Abbasid era, only to regain significant importance in the Ayyubid and Mamluk periods. During Ottoman rule, the city decayed completely while maintaining a certain cultural prestige. Today, it is the seat of the central government and all of the government ministries. Damascus was chosen as the 2008 Arab Capital of Culture.
Environmentalists Clean Up River Barada
Audio slideshow produced during an IWPR workshop for young Syrian journalists held in Beirut, October 2009.
The Barada River, once a source of life for the people of Damascus, is now dried up and polluted but a group of young environmentalists are out to change that. Some fifty volunteers were so concerned to see the Barada becoming a dump for garbage and sewage that they organised a clean-up campaign.
The River Barada means everything to the people of Syria. Without the river, Damascus would not have been the oldest inhabited city in the world, said one member, Issam Habbal.
The activists plan to make the clean-up an annual campaign but want to do much more to raise awareness and get official support.

Syria: The water crisis of Damascus afflicts the young
Children queued at mobile water tanks in Damascus three days after water supplies to the city were disrupted, Thursday.
The Syrian government said on Monday that the water shortage was caused by a faulty pipeline, which would be fixed within 48 hours. However, speculation abounds that the conflict within the country has cut off the Barada River - Damascus' main water supply.

A Small Syrian Town Keeps Ancient Language Alive
Video produced during an IWPR workshop for young Syrian journalists held in Damascus, November 2009.
Aramaic, the language of Jesus Christ, has few speakers today but it is being kept alive by the people of Maaloula, near Damascus, who hope to preserve it from extinction. Some even hope to attract scholars from around the world who are interested in Aramaic.
The language is still used by the Syriac Christian church and the majority of the 15,000 people of Maaloula can speak it but few can write in it today.

Damascus Coffee Shops Retain Traditional Charm
Audio slideshow produced during an IWPR workshop for young Syrian journalists held in Beirut, October 2009.
Despite the opening of western-style cafes in Damascus, the old coffee shops are still a favoured destination for those interested in the traditions of the old city.
The Nawfara café, the oldest in Damascus, teems every night with people who come to listen to Abu Shadi, the storyteller. He recites the tales of historic heroes whose sagas adorn the cafés walls.
The 100-year-old cafe has been a meeting place for revolutionaries, writers, critics and intellectuals in addition to the neighbourhoods elderly. It also attracts foreign tourists.

Zabadani - الزبداني, Syria 2010
Zabadani (Arabic: الزبداني) is a city in southwestern Syria in the Rif Dimashq Governorate, close to the border with Lebanon. It is located in the center of a green valley surrounded by high mountains at an elevation of around 1,100 m.
Compared to Damascus, the weather in Zabadani tends to be milder in the summer — about 58 degrees less, but from December to the end of February it is colder with a lot of snow, and the temperature drops to -10 degrees. The mild weather along with the scenic views, made the town a popular resort both for tourists and for visitors from other Syrian cities, especially from nearby Damascus and for tens of thousands of visitors from the Arabian peninsula. A more elevated region than Zabadani is its neighbour, Bloudan, also a resort for thousands of tourists. Bloudan is about 1,500 metres above sealevel.
Zabadani is predominantly Sunni with a substantial percentage of Christians. Christians have their own church and monastery. Zabadani is rapidly growing and is well connected to Damascus.
The Scouts of Syria have a national training center at Zabadani, where the first Arab Jamboree was held in 1954.

Syrian army takes full control of water source city Wadi Barada
Every town and village in Wada Barada in western Damascus has been taken over by the Syrian government forces, the Syrian army command said on Sunday.
Ain Fijeh, one of the towns recaptured is crucial for the Syrian government as it contains the Ain Fijeh spring, the main water source providing 80 percent of water use for the capital's over five million population.
Clashes in this area broke out between Syrian government forces and rebels last December, causing a water-supply crisis for 5…
