Tjepper No5 at Statfold Barn - Destination Barbados 2019
After an absence of over 80 years, BARBADOS once again has a passenger railway.
The newly constructed ST NICHOLAS ABBEY HERITAGE RAILWAY was opened on 21 January 2019.
This video tells the recent story of a Mallet compound articulated locomotive built in 1914 by Arnold Jung of Germany, works number #2279, to a 0-4-4-0 wheel arrangement. Engine No. 5 'Tjepper' worked at Ceper Baru sugar mill in Java.
The locomotive was saved from the cutters torch and purchased for the Statfold Barn Railway Collection.
In 2017 the locomotive was sold to the new St Nicholas Abbey Heritage Railway in Barbados and restoration of the engine started almost immediately.
This video is a summary of the engine's journey from purchase to back in steam at Statfold Barn shortly before being shipped out to her new home in Barbados.
HISTORY: The first Railway in Barbados, the Barbados General Railway, was built to a gauge of 3ft 6 inches. The first Company suffered financially and was taken over in 1897 by the Bridgetown and St Andrews Railways Limited who re-gauged the line to 2ft 6In.
In 1905 the railway was taken over by yet another private company, The Barbados Light Railway which also went under by 1915 when the railway was nationalised.
On 5 December 1915 the railway became the Barbados Government Railway. Nationalisation could not save the railway and it closed in December of 1937.
Final disposal agreement was signed on 12 October 1938.
The new ST NICHOLAS ABBEY HERITAGE RAILWAY began construction in 2017 and opened on 21 January 2019.
The inaugural train was hauled by diesel locomotive ‘BADGER’, and on the same day testing was being carried in the United Kingdom at Statfold Engineering Ltd on the steam locomotive, ‘TJEPPER’, which once completed will be sent out to Barbados.
Riding behind a steam train in the West Indies is an experience that until now could only be dreamed of by those too young to remember when wheels upon rails were driven by steam and piston stroke.
Once ‘TJEPPER’ arrives in Barbados, ST NICHOLAS ABBEY HERITAGE RAILWAY will be the only steam hauled passenger train service in the English-speaking Caribbean.

The Barbados Historic Railway Story
The video was taken on the St. Nicholas Abbey Historic Railway {SNAHR) Tour. It's an amazing story of the vintage trains and railways the operated in Barbados many years ago, The SNAHR tour is a step back in time. There is something enchanting about those old steam engines and the story telling and tour brings it all to life.

Please Support: We're at St Nicholas Abbey in Barbados in this episode of #Gallivanting with Chris and Tehya De La Rosa.
St Nicholas Abbey is located in Saint Peter, Barbados, a plantation house, museum and rum distillery. Colonel Benjamin Berringer built the house in 1658.
This house is one of only three genuine Jacobean mansions in the Western Hemisphere. It is similar to the English Jacobean manor houses of the first half of the seventeenth century, the period between the Tudor and Georgian styles, beginning in the reign of James I.

Barbados Great Train Hike 2013
On February 17, 2013 a friend and I decided to attempt the Annual Barbados National Trust Great Train Hike, which follows the route of the old Barbados Train line. The line was in service until 1937 and ran from Bridgetown to Belleplaine. Total distance is 40 km. Feeling the effects of the heat we managed to complete the route to Bath leaving 12 kms to go for next time.. A fantastic experience and a walk through history. All the sugar factories we passed are now closed. The black and white footage is of the actual Barbados train and was taken in 1933. Google: Windmill of Barbados to see the full video. An amazing bit of history of a time past.

Carlisle Bay UNESCO Heritage Site Bridgetown
Exploring the beauty of Bridgetown, Barbados
Bridgetown, the bustling capital and sole city of Barbados, was named for the native Amerindian bridge, which crossed the mouth of the Constitution River. Today the river, also known as the Careenage, slices Bridgetown in two and is mainly used for small pleasure craft. Mega cruise ships dock at an artificial port to the west of town. Steeped in British colonial history, Bridgetown exudes a distinctly English sensibility with a laidback West Indian feel. Island lovers come here from around the world to browse the duty free shops on Broad Street, frolic in the azure waters of Carlisle Bay, and explore the city's museums. History buffs will also enjoy the Barbados Garrison, a UNESCO World Heritage site, as well as the city's magnificent colonial buildings
For beautiful places in Barbados I'd recommend the following:
Visit Harrison's Cave
Visit Hunte's Gardens
Take a dive on the Atlantis Submarine
Visit Cherry Tree Hill for breath-taking views of the island
Visit Hackleton's Cliff for breath-taking views of the island
Visit St. John's Parish Church
Gun Hill Signal Station is also fantastic
Visit Archer's Bay, River Bay, Crane Beach, Botttom Bay and Rockley Beach.
Hope this helps
Regards

Barbados Tourism Features St.Nicholas Abbey Heritage Package
Barbados Tourism Encyclopedia features St. Nicholas Abbey in its popular Settlers Beach Villa heritage package: The holiday includes luxury villas at 1/2 price and a free tour to the plantation.
This video
To see video on the Settlers Beach Villa Holidays Package go to
The Settlers Beach Villa package for independent travelers includes a complimentary tour to the magical and mysterious Jacobean plantation - St. Nicholas Abbey. It is located in a thick wooded gully on Cherry Tree Hill overlooking the rugged east coast and Bathsheba in Barbados.
St. Nicholas Abbey is the only surviving Jacobean plantation in the world. Here machinery like the old steam mills still grind sugar cane as they did 300 years ago, and sugar and rum are made in the ancient tradition, by hand and time, and with technology that simply is not used anywhere else anymore.
Culpepper Island Barbados
Culpepper Island is a tiny rock in the Atlantic Ocean close to Bayfield and Ragged Point in Saint Philip, Barbados. The island is uninhabited.
Culpepper Island is a small uninhabited island located off the south-eastern coast of Barbados, near to Ragged Point.
Although Culpepper Island can be reached by swimmers (especially at low tide) great care should be taken as the seas and currents in this area are quite strong. Observing from the shore or cliffs that overlook the island is much safer.
The island is 220 ft x 75 ft and rises aproximately 20 ft out of the water.
