Clifton Hampden and The Barley Mow Pub (3 Men in a Boat)
Clifton Hampden is on a 'Cliff' overlooking the Thames. It is a Dog-Leg junction village. The Barley Mow Pub is famous for being mentioned by Jerome J Jerome If you stay the night on land at Clifton, you cannot do better than put up at the Barley Mow.
It is, without exception, I should say, the quaintest, most old-world inn up the river. It stands on the right of the bridge, quite away from the village. Its low-pitched gables and thatched roof and latticed windows give it quite a story-book appearance, while inside it is even still more once-upon-a-timeyfied.
Clifton as it was once known at sometime gained the extension Hampden, the when and why seem to be in dispute but I have read that the family of John Hampden who received a mortal would at the Battle of Chalgrove had owned the village and that he had stayed at the Plough Inn, Clifton. Many places were named after the much mourned John Hampden ((including Hampden Park) but Clifton Hampden is not amongst this list. Clifton Hampden bridge replaced the ferry in 1867 and the private Toll ceased in 1946. The Toll House still exists.
Solo Rock Backing Track Guitarist Barley Mow Bath
Any guys out there in different countries doing this kind of gig? What songs do you play? And what do people really want you to play?!
Ben Fletcher. Solo, backing track, rock guitarist. South West UK.
Performing a cover, in the Barley Mow, Bath.
I play mostly rock/funk/some pop tunes with this set. I can be pretty diverse, throwing in rock n roll and instrumental tunes and blues, or I can keep it pretty straight ahead pub covers, depending on the audience.

Jane Austen, Stamps, by Angela Barret
Do anything rather than marry without affection (Pride and Prejudice)
200th anniversary of Pride and Prejudice ...
21 February 2013:
The Royal Mail has released six new Jane Austen stamps today in honor of the 200th anniversary of the publication of Pride and Prejudice (28 January 2013). Designed by artist Angela Barrett, they include illustrations of scenes from the six major novels:
Two first-class stamps will feature illustrations from Pride and Prejudice and another Austen classic, Sense and Sensibility. Images from Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion finish out the set. Each stamp depicts original artwork commissioned by the Royal Mail.
In addition, for a week, mail posted in the village of Chawton - where the author spent her last years - and the village of Steventon, near Basingstoke, where she was born, will be marked with a special postmark to celebrate the connection. The postmark will feature the quote: Do anything rather than marry without affection, taken from Pride and Prejudice.
Royal Mail stamps spokesman Andrew Hammond said: New generations continue to fall in love with her work through television and film adaptations, as well as, of course, the books themselves.
He added it was an honour for Royal Mail to commemorate her work.
In 2007, a BBC poll for World Book Day voted Pride and Prejudice as the book most respondents could not live without.
Jane Austen was born in Hampshire in 1775, was an English novelist whose works of romantic fiction, set among the landed gentry, earned her a place as one of the most widely read writers in English literature. Her realism and biting social commentary have gained her historical importance among scholars and critics. Died, at the age of 41, in 1817 in Winchester.
Angela Barrett was born in Essex, 1955. Studied at Maidstone College of Art and the Royal College of Art. Since graduating, she has taught Illustration at Cambridge College of Technology and Drawing and at Chelsea College of Art.
She has won several awards: Mother Goose in l984. Smarties Award, been short-listed for the Kate Greenaway Medal and twice been runner-up for the Emil/Kurt Maschler Award. Over the years she has collaborated with distinguished writers.
