Old Baths Hall, Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire. 17th November 2018
It was here in 1821 that John Parkinson, a land agent for Sir Joseph Banks of Revesby, sank a shaft to find coal, but instead hit a spring of salt water. The shaft was abandoned in 1822 and the water overflowed into a stream where it cured sick cattle who drank it. People then started to drink the water as a cure and initially bathed in an open wooden tank.
This encouraged the local landowner and squire Thomas Hotchkin, to build a brick bath and a windlass in about 1829/30. Its fame spread and in 1838 / 1839 he built a proper bath house with 6 treatment rooms and a hotel where all the latest treatments were available to the visitor. Hotchkin also laid out parkland with shrubbery and walks, all at a cost of (then) £30,000. This was continually expanded and in 1887 was bought by the Syndicate, a group of businessmen who enlarged the Spa Baths and the Spa Hotel (later the Victoria Hotel), and laid out attractive wooded gardens and walks. The timbered roof of the pump room and the present frontage was designed by C. F. Davis for the Syndicate. It is the main visible feature left after the collapse of the well in 1983, although the main part of the former Hotchkin bath house still exists around the back, but is obscured by the pebble dash frontage.

They also commissioned Richard Adolphus Came, a London architect who later settled here, to design a garden city for Woodhall Spa. The names of the Syndicate are remembered in the road names to the South of the town which they hoped would be a large suburban style housing estate. It was never completed due to slowness of selling building plots and, consequently, the investors lost most of their money.

The Dimples (affectionately known as The Dimps) were part of the Don Arden Galaxy stable in Carnaby Street along side Small Faces, Nashville Teens, Move, Attack, Chris Jagger etc. Initially a Scunthorpe based blues/soul band, formed by Gladwin and Wincott in 1964. Joined in 1965 by Greg Tomlinson from the Chechakos and Craig Austin from the Imps (briefly featuring Iain Matthews) Matthews Southern Comfort/Pyramid/Fairport Convention and Plainsong). The Dimples were later to become hotel trashing pioneers at London's infamous Madison Hotel in Sussex Gardens and regularly working the Marquee, Flamingo, Speakeasy, 100 Club and all other major London blues haunts. Also touring the University & College Circuits, Mecca and Top Rank Ballrooms, All-nighters, Twisted Wheel in Manchester, Golden Torch at Hanley, 76 Club Burton, Nottingham's Boat Clubs, Newcastle's Go-Go & Quay Club, Hull Skyline, Sheffield City Hall & Esquire Club etc. There were countless others but good old Jazz Workshop where it all started also deserves a special mention. First live radio gig at Tiles in Oxford Street on Ready Steady Radio with DJ Pete Murray. Live TV debut on Granada's Scene at Six Thirty. The first single though totally inappropriate and unrepresentative of the band, was released under protest on Decca after turning down Hi Ho Silver Lining. The B-side was much better and apparently is now something of a Northern Soul & Mod Circuit classic. The Dimples eventually evolved into psychedelic harmony soul band Gospel Garden (Camp label) with various personnel changes before finally becoming Methuselah (Elektra). Methuselah then splintered into Distant Jim (Negram), Steamhammer (CBS) and Amazing Blondel (Island).
In 1999 three original members of The Dimples (Stuart Smith on drums, Greg Tomlinson on guitar/vocals and Craig Austin on guitar/vocals) reformed and are featured here performing at the Millennium Megabash at Scunny Baths together with bassist Bill Gibson and singer Fred Havercroft from the original Imps

Scunthorpe First Time Live | Orchestras Live
The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Orchestras Live have produced a video from the First Time Live - Youth project in Scunthorpe. It was filmed at The Baths Hall on Friday 8 March 2013 where two concerts took place for local young people, and documents the involvement of the young producers in programming, producing and presenting the concerts themselves.
