Viking Song - Travelled So Far (from the Lake District Loki show)
Travelled So Far
A song about Viking settlers in Britain. Was the Loki carving in Kirkby Stephen a warning to other settlers? Was there a danger of losing their identity as they struggled to survive, needed to assimilate, tried to trade? Which god would have answered their prayers the best? Perhaps the shape-shifter, the stranger in Asgard, perhaps Loki.
A song written for my Lake District Loki show, an evening or history, mystery and mead. First performed at The Beacon Museum, Whitehaven, UK 17th August 2019.
Lyrics: Steve Wharton
Music: Owen Evans, Arr. Steve Wharton
Travelled so far
Are we still under the eyes of the Gods
Do the Aesir see our sacrifice?
1. Home is our boat
Food and fire our only treasure
Great deeds and heroes live only in song
We trade in hope
Fight to stay true to ourselves
We pray to each god as we need them
2. With each new deal
Every allegiance, another oath
We tie ourselves in endless knots
And so we settle
Guests of the Jorvik jarls
Lice on the feathers within nests of kings
3. We shift our shape
Show a different face day by day
Sew our words up in our mouths
The thinnest of thread
Binds us to our past
We sink into the shadows like the sons of Fenrir
