Videomentary ( Video documentary ) - Trucking beehives: Beekeepers of northern Alberta in Canada transport honeybee colonies across Canada's vast crop lands.
Honeybees play an important role in the pollination of Canada's fruits, vegetables and crops, like cucumbers, melons, blueberries and cranberries and canola, according to the Canadian Honey Council.
In a 1998 study by Agriculture, and Agri-Food Canada, the estimated value of the bees to pollination was at $732 million, the council now says this has climbed to more than $1 billion a year.
In the United States, the value of the honeybee is much larger, estimated to be approximately $15 billion a year.
There are about 10,000 beekeepers in Canada, operating a total of 600,000 honeybee colonies, according to the CHC.
Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba produce about 80 per cent of Canada's 154 million kilograms of honey annually.
In the winter of 2007, Ontario one of Canada's beekeeping province, saw 150-250 apiarists lose about 23,000 of their 76,000 hives, with an estimated value of $5 million dollars.
This condition of honeybee die-off raised international fears and questions about the state of pollinators and the future of global food production, since one third of our food depends on pollinators.
Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) or sometimes honey bee depopulation syndrome (HBDS) is a phenomenon in which worker bees from a beehive or European honey bee colony abruptly disappear.
While such disappearances have occurred throughout the history of apiculture, the term colony collapse disorder was first applied to a drastic rise in the number of disappearances of Western honey bee colonies in North America in late 2006.
Colony collapse is economically significant because many agricultural crops worldwide are pollinated by bees.
The cause or causes of the syndrome are not yet fully understood, although many authorities attribute the problem to biotic factors such as Varroa mites and insect diseases (i.e., pathogens including Nosema apis and Israel acute paralysis virus).
Other proposed causes include environmental change-related stresses, malnutrition and pesticides (e.g.. neonicotinoids such as imidacloprid), and migratory beekeeping.
More speculative possibilities have included both cell phone radiation, and genetically modified (GM) crops with pest control characteristics.
Though there are still no concrete evidence that exists for either assertion, it has also been suggested that it may be due to a combination of many factors and that no single factor is the cause.

Beekeeping, Beekeepers at Work Supering Beehives for Honey Production in Ontario Canada
Here's a nice static view of three master beekeepers at work supering up beehives in Ontario Canada on the July 1st Holiday in preparation for summer crop. Its with high hopes that these men give the bees more space in their hives.
The metal screen inserted in between the boxes is the queen excluder; this barrier separates the brood chambers below from the honey box(s) above - it keeps the queen from laying her eggs up in the honeycomb.

LAKE LOUISE AND MORAINE LAKE | Hiking in Banff, Canada - Travel Vlog 04
Lake Louise and Moraine Lake are some of the most beautiful lakes we saw while visiting Banff, Canada. When we went to Lake Louise, we hiked the Lake Agnes trail up to Lake Agnes Tea House and then continued hiking up to the Beehive. At Moraine Lake, I sat in a hammock and enjoyed a beautiful view of mountains and glacial lakes. Both adventures were amazing!

Government of Canada Investing to Keep Bee Industry Buzzing
The Government of Canada is helping the beekeeping industry develop new strategies to respond to a decline in honey bee colony populations. Member of Parliament Kelly Block (Saskatoon-Rosetown-Biggar) announced today on behalf of Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz an investment of up to nearly $370,000 to the Saskatchewan Beekeepers' Association.
