Lowlander Beer & Wynand Fockink Launch World's First IPA Genever
In the 17th century, when ships full of exotic herbs docked in the Amsterdam harbour, the Dutch started to distil liqueurs and genever at a large-scale. This is also an important part of Dutch brewing history: the “Lowlanders”started to brew beers with botanicals.
So it is not surprising that Lowlander Beer, whose botanically brewed beers once again put the Lowlands on the map for beers full of flavour and character, joins hands with Wynand Fockink, the oldest, working liqueur and genever distillery in the Netherlands. The result is a unique I.P.A. genever; to our knowledge the very first ever made.

Dave Markey's review:
9-1-91
Rotterdam, Holland - Day 2 of this fest starts with another call from Keith. We hit the local hash bar for a space cake breakfast. Hard to believe tonight is the last show of this tour, it's been great fun. Hung out with Nick Cave, a really nice gentleman who bought me a beer. Thurston introduced us, and mentioned Desperate Teenage Lovedolls, and Mr. Cave said it sounded great. The festival is held in a big indoor multi-hall convention center-type place, with many bands playing simultaneously. Nirvana we're getting really tanked-up backstage, and Chris tells me Kurt is flying on mushrooms. I film Kim doing the band's make up. Courtney Love enters the room, with Billy Corgan {Smashing Pumpkins were playing too} and introduces him to everyone. I think everyone was vastly underwhelmed. After they leave, Kurt scrawls on the wall in magic marker; Courtney + Gish and smiled incessantly. Nirvana go on and just about drive me to tears. They were fucking up too, but fucking up gloriously. I film most of the set, loading the cartridges non-stop. I was even calling out songs from stage right. Hey Kurt, play In Bloom! {They haven't played that song on this tour 'til tonight.} At the end, Kurt goes into distructo mode, and won't stop, until he is accosted by bouncers. Alex soon puts a stop to it.

Comments from a trader on dimeadozen:
Comments from dime users:
I think the Nirvana set from this festival is a raw and nice performance, just before the mainstream and thus the beggining of the end...
At the festival Nirvana weren't allowed to play on the main stage. The Smashing Pumkins were. Nirvana got (childishsly) mad and destroyed the complete backline (which was not theirs but the PA Rental Service's ) When they tried to demolish the huge sound stacks on the front of house, they were taken off the stage. Needless to say they didn't get paid !
A journalist who spoke with Nirvana that day said:
I mainly spoke with Cobain, the other two went to the Doelen to check it out. On their return they were moaning about the small hall they would have to play, while a band like the Smashing Pumpkins was on the main stage. This arose a wayward atmosphere.
It really did, Nirvana completely trashed the stage.
The show ends in chaos. In the book Come As You Are Michael Azzerad described the situation as following: For the last show of the tour, in Rotterdam, the group got drunk. Near the end of the show Krist climbed on the PA tower with his trouser on his ankles and a bottle in his hand. Security runs on stage and pulls him down, while Kurt was smashing up everything around him. One of the security guys lashes out to Krist, which started a dispute. Krist got removed from the hall, but came back and started fighting the promoter.
Willem Venema, that same promoter, tells another story. I was warned before the show by my stage manager that they would start throwing with their amps and drum kit. They did that every night, part of the show. I told their tour manager that I would intervene when they would take our stuff, PA and microphones, for the simple reason that there was another band after them. At the end of the show Krist gets up the PA and made a start throwing the speakers down the stage.I walked up to him and pulled him off the PA by his belt. On which Kurt started to interfere , telling me not to touch his buddy. They acted like they were very drunk.

Why these foreigners like DRENTHE more than AMSTERDAM...
Why Drenthe is the place these foreigners want to be?
Dutch language students of the BLC Dutch Summer School can choose between two locations: Amsterdam or Drenthe.
Everybody knows Amsterdam, but very few foreigners have heard about the province Drenthe. But once they're there (in Drenthe), they are amazed by the landscape, the people, the cafes, the nature...
They can imagine Van Gogh going there... A perfect quiet environment to relax from work, to get away from the city, to focus on studies, to enjoy nature... and attractions like the megalytics (hunebedden), Orvelte, het Klompenmuseum (the clog museum) and Drents Museum in Assen.
Many people say 'Amsterdam' is NOT the Netherlands... and actually, thatt's true... If you really want to discover the country, take a bike and go to a province like Drenthe...
And the big bonus if you're learning Dutch: people will be patient to speak Dutch with you and they really value it! (which is a complete difference with a fast and international city like Amsterdam, where people will switch to English once they hear your Dutch is not perfect).

Dutch free range farming - The Netherlands from above
How far from the farming life do we live and what do we really know about our food production? Still, the Netherlands is for an important part an agricultural country. We export a lot, but we also transport a lot of food. The megaliths and industrial food production are at odds with the idyllic picture that we cherish from the countryside: a little keet farmer, with a few cows and a blissful smile on his face. We know that the time of that farmer's romantic image is over. Nestled among the trees, hobby farmer Harm Joling keeps an untouched piece of moor. We cherish the illusion, recommending free range milk over the conventional milk from cows in stables, and that gives us the feeling that we are self-sufficient. We massively try to prepare our own food ourselves, as much as possible. Abandoned lands in large cities are transformed into vegetable gardens. That’s how we maintain the illusion, on a small scale.
The Netherlands from above shows us a country from a spectacular perspective. From the sky it is possible to see how the Netherlands changes through the seasons, and how in parallel they form the determining moments of our own life cycle. Through data visuals, impressive aerial images and portraits of people on the ground, the second series of the Netherlands from above outlines an image of how time has changed our country and how we move in it. The way we live from day to day, and from generation to generation in this country reflects our resilient mentality. The Netherlands from above season 2 tells us the story of seeing and taking opportunities, falling and rising up again, reinventing the wheel again and again. Where the first series was an ode to the makeable Netherlands, this second series is an ode to our resilience.
