Belgium: The City of Tournai
Tournai (in Dutch Doornik) is located in the Wallonia region of Belgium, in the basin of the River Scheldt.
Tournai is considered to be one of the most important cultural sites in Belgium. The mixed Romanesque- and Gothic-style cathedral of Notre Dame de Tournai and the belfry, the oldest in Belgium, have been jointly designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Inside the cathedral, the Châsse de Notre-Dame flamande, a beautifully ornate 12th-century reliquary, gives witness to Tournai's wealth in the Middle Ages.
At the time we visited Tournai the most parts of the cathedral were inaccessible due to restauration acitivities.
Other places of interest are the 13th-century Scheldt bridge (Pont-des-Trous) and the main square (Grand'Place), as well as several old city gates, historic warehouses, and a variety of museums.
On rue Barre-St-Brice are two of the oldest private houses in Europe, dating from between 1175 and 1200 and built in the Romanesque style, while the rue des Jésuites includes a Gothic house from the 13th century.
Historic Tournai, Belgium's Oldest City - Tournai, Belgium
Originally a Roman outpost, and later the capital of the Frankish empire until that was moved to Paris in 432AD, Tournai is the oldest city in Belgium. It was the birthplace of Clovis I, the first king of the Salian Franks, an important religious center before the Reformation, and remains a major Belgian cultural site. Its Cathedral de Notre Dame de Tournai and Belfry of Tournai are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
For visitors to Brussels, Tournai can be reached via train and explored as an easy day trip.

E09A1930 - Pont des Trous, a bridge over the Scheldt (Escaut) River, was built in 1290AD, and was once part of the city's fortifications
E09A2025 - Le Fort Rouge, named for its red roof, was built as a defensive tower in the 12th century
E09A1919 - Tournai was captured by England's Henry VIII in 1513, becoming the only Belgian city to have been ruled by England; the Tower of Henry VIII, unfortunately surrounded by scaffolding while I was there; was built during that period as a defensive post

Tournai is a city in western Belgium, near the French border. It’s known for the huge Cathedral of Notre-Dame, with 5 towers and a rose window. Nearby, the Grand Place is a triangular square lined with bars and restaurants. It’s dominated by the 12th-century Belfry of Tournai, with views over the city. Opposite the belfry is the Romanesque St. Quentin’s Church, and behind that is the medieval Red Fort tower.

Discovering the Belgian city of Tournai
Opening with a three person rendition of 'Heart and Soul' on the organ in Tournai’s centuries old cathedral we move to the military bridge, meet an American tourist on a boat-cycling holiday which began in Paris before jumping on a couple of e-bikes ourselves.
We then step into Notre-Dame discovering the Roman and Gothic architecture, and the treasure rooms. Inside the Natural History museum we discover all manner of animals, climb the Belfry then recharge at a cafe for ‘Elevensies.’
In-line with War Commemorations we discover two British graves, boats on a lake, one of the lime kilns and even a 13th century castle!
A short intro on local beer is followed by discovering some gorgeous hot chocolate as neither Shagufta nor I drink alcohol. We also discover some French bakers who migrated to Tournai, then give a glimpse of a famous bread named Clovis.
Discovering a Monet and a Manet in the fine arts museum we are then shocked with some fantastic objects in the puppet museum while encountering another American tourist.
We close with Henry VIII’s tower, the red fort, the grand place at night, then some photos from our favourite restaurant in the city - so good we returned twice!

The dragon on top of the belfry of Tournai dances on the rythm of the ringing of the Bancloque !
If the Bancloque is very slow at the start (it takes more than 2 minutes to give the first strike), but stops very fast (the last strike is given only 45 seconds after the motor is switched off), the dragon does even better: he needs 3 minutes to get to full amplitude, and the first minute no motion can be seen at all, but only 10 seconds after switching of the motor, he barely moves. The dragon is in 5:1 resonance with the bell, meaning that the dragon does 5 back-and-forth motions for each back-and-forth swing of the bell.

Welcome to Tournai !
If what you most enjoy is history and heritage, art, folklore and traditions, conviviality, ambiance and delicious food,...don’t look any further. You’ll find all of that and much more in Tournai!
Tournai is not only Belgium’s oldest town. It is also the birthplace of France, thanks to Childéric and Clovis.
Boasting a history of more than 2000 years, its origins can be traced back to Ancient Rome.
Important witnesses remain from this long past; they have been carefully restored and Tournai is proud to share them with you.
A city of art, Tournai is best discovered on foot: listed façades, historical districts, picturesque streets and two buildings listed as UNESCO world heritage sites: the country’s oldest belfry and the immense cathedral with five bell towers.
Tournai also invites you to experience its unique conviviality and atmosphere. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to drink a local beer, to savour a typically Belgian dish or to sample the culinary diversity in one of the many cafés and restaurants in the Grand-Place or along
the quays. Or to take part in one of the numerous folkloric attractions and events that are a predominant feature of life in Tournai.
Would you rather seek out fresh air and green areas? The City of the Five Bell Towers is set in the countryside and abounds in wooded areas, parks, gardens and squares. Comprising 29 villages which can be accessed by venturing up and down the greenways along the banks of the Scheldt River, the nearby countryside is the ideal backdrop for the most spectacular cycles.
