Paris, France - Video Tour of Oberkampf (Pere Lachaise cemetery, Edith Piaf Museum)
Hello and welcome for another video tour of a fantastic Paris neighborhood by New York Habitat ( ). In this video, you will discover the neighborhood of Oberkampf, this little haven of peace located in the East side of the capital, between the Canal Saint-Martin and the famous Belleville village.
Also, feel free to watch other great video tours of Paris neighborhoods, such as Montmartre ( ) or Les Grands Boulevards ( ).
HISTORY
Oberkampf gets its name from the Industrialist Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf, famous for his imprimé or printed fabrics. King Louis XVI declared his company a Manufacture Royale in 1783, and gave Oberkampf the nobility title écuyer, or esquire, and today he has a metro station and a street named after him. Very royale indeed!
THE LOWER EAST SIDE OF PARIS
If you've watched our video tour of the Lower East Side in New York City ( ), you will see a similarity in Oberkampf. With its trendy cafes and restaurants, its Arab pastries and its colorful markets - you won't soon forget this hip village.
Constantly showing up in movies, from Bollywood to Hollywood, there is definitely a sense of magic in Oberkampf!
WINTER CIRCUS
Le Cirque d'Hiver -- or The Winter Circus -- was built in 1852. In the past, it was used from November to April when the Champs-Elysées's circus was closed. Today, you can enjoy circuses and other shows all year round here. Stop and have a look at its well-preserved colors and the sculpted Amazone of Pradier above the main entrance.
WALK ON WATER ON BOULEVARD RICHARD LENOIR.
On Boulevard Richard Lenoir, you will find 17,700 square meters of gardens made of willow trees & firns, which are the evidence that you are in fact walking on the filled-in part of the Canal Saint-Martin, which once flowed all the way from the northeast side of Paris to the Seine.
EDITH PIAF MUSEUM
The super famous singer who everyone can sing at least one song from Panam, panam, panam to La vie en rose has her own museum in Oberkampf. Visiting the Edith Piaf Museum is a good way to get a taste of old Paris, in the time of cafés & cabarets filled with cigarette smoke.
PERE LACHAISE CEMETERY
You won't regret climbing up the hill to Père Lachaise cemetery, which is Paris'largest cemetary. At the cemetery you will find the tombs of everyone from Jim Morrison to Oscar Wilde. People still come to the Père Lachaise to see the final resting place of thousands of past and present celebrities.

Saint Germain des Prés or the Boul'mich? | INA Archive

27th October 1965
The Latin district changes personality, warranting less and less its name. On the Boul’mich (Boulevard St Michel), clothes and shoe shops open every day and as seen as a threat to the bookshops and student cafés. The Sorbonne is still there, but after the classes, students head towards les Carrefours Mabillon and Odéon. Saint Germain des Près has also changed since the mythical post-war years: Juliette Gréco has changed profile and the Flore café has renewed its clientele. The existentialists have left the district and given way to a well-to-do clientele from the western districts of Auteuil or la Muette. New cafés have opened: The “Drugstore” and the “Drugstorien” with decoration conceived by Slavik in a 1900’s style. “L’Epicerie” is an unusual witness of a past era of Saint Germain des Près: a loyal clientele continues to attend happenings. The atmosphere is joyful at the “Assassins” where crowded customers sing along to songs. In the cellars, the jerk has replaced rock and bebop, the “Bohème” has left to make the way for very respectable young people.

Street artist Banksy splashes Paris with works on migrants
(25 Jun 2018) STREET ARTIST BANKSY SPLASHES PARIS WITH WORKS ON MIGRANTS
Banksy is believed to have taken his message on migration to Paris, with seven works attributed to the provocative British street artist.
The works attributed to Bansky have been discovered in recent days, including one near a former center for migrants at the city's northern edge that depicts a child spraypainting wallpaper over a swastika.
Nicolas Laugero Lasserre, editor of the website Artistikrezo, which broke the story, said he heard a few weeks ago through contacts in the French street art world that Bansky was planning a trip.
He said he started looking for the works and came across the one in the northern Porte de la Chappelle neighbourhood.
The same wallpaper stencil was used in a 2009 exposition at the Bristol Museum, he said, describing it as a real signature.
Streetart enthusiasts were working to cover the works with plexiglass to protect them.

Paris, France - Video Tour of Les Grands Boulevards
Hello and welcome to another New York Habitat video tour ( ). Today, we will be giving you a tour of Les Grands Boulevards, a fantastic neighborhood of Paris with both amazing day and night life.
Les Grands Boulevards (the big boulevards) start at Place de la République and end at the prestigious Grands Magasins.
From Charles V, in the 14th century, to Napoleon III's modification of Paris, the Boulevards, famous for their theaters, offer 600 years of Paris' History. From 1853 to 1870, le Baron Haussmann was obsessed with the culture of straight lines and transformed the old Paris of Charles V into the one you can still see today, the Paris of Napoleon III.
The magnificent Opera of Charles Garnier (1875) is a good starting point to explore the Boulevard lifestyle of the 19th century. This piece of architecture, easily spotted by its large dome, is a place to go enjoy a ballet or some lyrical singing. Book a seat to admire the ceiling, painted by Marc Chagall in 1964, during your visit.
Walk down the Boulevard des Capucines and you will reach the Madeleine Church. The neo-classical building, which is one of Paris' most famous churches, took nearly a century to construct.
Le Musée Grévin is a living theatre of wax celebrities, which includes the first man on the moon and Brad Pitt. At the end stop for a drink at the museum's brand new. If you like you can have your Perrier served by the King himself, Elvis!
The Porte Saint-Denis and the Porte Saint-Martin are two grandiose archways, at the end of the Grand Boulevards, used to mark the entrance of Louis XIV's Paris. The Sun King always knew how to deal with his armies and the two triumph arcs are here to remember it forever. The Porte Saint-Denis and the Porte Saint-Martin illustrate the victories of the French army.
After the Porte Saint-Denis, the street turns into a faubourg or a neighborhood, the Faubourg Saint-Denis. This colorful street is full of fruit and vegetable vendors, wine shops and cool cafés, such as Chez Jeanette (47 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Denis). It is a great place to buy some food and cook it in your New York Habitat vacation rental ( ). Stop for an apéritif at one of the numerous cafés of the Faubourg Saint-Denis and take in the relaxing atmosphere of the 10th arrondissement.
The Galeries Lafayette (40 Boulevard Haussmann) and Printemps, just next door, are the fashion malls of Paris. You will not only appreciate the huge selection of the hottest brand names in fashion, but you will be amazed by the building housing the Galeries Lafayette itself.
With tons of brasseries, cafés and restaurants, the Grands Boulevards provide an endless supply of culinary pleasures. However, French cuisine is not the only reward after a day of exploring. It is also a nice place for terraces and night clubs. Food fans should also check out the Chocolate Museum on Boulevard de Bonne Nouvelle.
Here are a few of David Hill's favorites: Chez Jeanette (47 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Denis), Racines (8 Passage des Panoramas), Le Grand Café (4 Boulevard des Capucines), Chartier (7 Rue du Faubourg Montmartre), and le Musée du chocolat (28 Boulevard de Bonne Nouvelle).
If you are looking for some nightlife excitement, start at De La Ville café, an ancient steam bath of Paris (34 Boulevard de Bonne Nouvelle). Then, head to the mythical Rex Club, which is famous for having the best DJs in the world. You will find it next to the monumental Rex Movie Theater (5 Boulevard Poissonnière).
Remember that New York Habitat offers hundreds of apartments for rent in Paris ( ), including furnished apartments ( ) and Bed & Breakfast ( ).
